A merry heart maketh a cheerful

Men are like bugles—the more brass
they contain the farther you can hear
them.
(atmßit.—What is the surest key to a
drunkard's heart?
Whiskey to be sure.

A COPY.
A clergyman asked of his scripture
pupils whether "the leopard could
change his spots?" "To be sure," re
plied Billy, "when he's got tired of one
spot he goes to another."
A GOOD Ihr.—"A penny for your
thoughts," said a gentleman to a pert
beauty. "They are not worth a farthing,
sir," she replied. "I was thinking of
you."
A young man stepped into a book•
seller's shop and asked for a Young
Corripanion.
"Well sir," said the boOkseller,
"here is my daughter."
"ilr. Brown's compliment to Mr.
Smith; thinks it is unnecessary his piggs
should go through his grounds." "Mr.
Smith's compliments to Mr. Brown;
thinks it equally unnecessary to spell
pigs with two g's."
"You say Mrs. Jones that you have
rived with the defendant for eight years.
Does the Court understand from that,
that you are married to him'!"
"In course it does."
"Have you a marriage certificate 7".
"Yes, your Honor, three on 'em—
two gals and a boy."
..The following which is said to be re
corded in an Irish graveyard, is excel•
lent in its kind :
"Here lies the body of John Mound,
Lost at sea and never found."
The following is better in its kind,
however,.as a specimen of sharp shoot
ing between a coquette and her lover :
"You mon are angele when you woo the maid,
But devils when the marriage vow is said."
The lover, not to be outdone, replies
es follows:
"The change, dear girl, is easily forgiven—
We find ourselves in hell instead of heaven."
A NEW FEATURE:—The Troy (N. Y.)
ladies have introduced a new feature at
their fairs. All the most bewitching
girls wear placards, labelled 'Atisses one
shilling each ;" and in some cases where
dealers possess extraordinary beauty, as
high as twenty-five cents is obtained.
Gentlemen who are fond of gathering
this kind of fruit ''melting from trees."
go in for it according to'the weight of
their purses; and one of the newspapers
states that one rtsy•lipped, bright -eyed
girl realized $62 in one evening.
One gentleman actually purchased 8 11
worth of the article.
Dora TR.INING.—A hopeful youth,
who was the owner of a yoimg hull ter
tier, was one day training the animal in
the art of being ferocious, and wanting
some animated object to set the dog up
on, his daddy, after considerable persua
sion, consented to get down upon all
fours and make fight with Mr. Bull.
Young America began to urge on the
dog—"sia-ter-bny—seize him," arm.; at
last the dog "made a dip" and got a
good hold upon the old man's proboscis,
and get the dog off he couldn't. So he
began to cry out with the pain caused
by the fangs of the dog. "Grin and
bear
,it, old man !" shouted the young
scapegrace.! "Grin and bear
he the Makin of the pup!"

Important Discovery.
CONSUMPTION
AND ALL
Diseases of the Lungs and Throat
ARE POSITIVELY
CURABLE BY INHALATION !! !
which conveys the
Remedies to the cavities in the lungs through the air
passages, and coming in direct contact with the disease,
neutralizes the tubercular matter, allays the cough,
causes a free and easy expectoration, heals the lungs,
purifies the blood, imparts renewed vitality , to the nee
'VOUS system, giving that tone and energy so indispensa
ble for the restoration of health. To he able to state
confidently that Consumption is curable by Inhalation,
is to inc a source of unalloyed pleasure. It is as much
under the control of medical treatment as any other
formidable disease; ninety out of every hundred cases
can be cured in the first stages, and fifty per cent, in the
second; but in the third stage it is impossible to save
more than fire per cent., for the lungs are so out up by
the disease as to defy medical skill. liven, however, in
the last stages, inhalation affords extraordinary relief to
the suffering attending this fearful scourge, which an
nually destroys ninety-five thousand persons in the U
nited States alone ; and a correct calculation shows that
of the present population of the earth, eighty millions
are destined to till the Consnmptice's grave.
Truly, the quiver of death has no arrow so fatal as
Consumption. In all ages it has been the great enemy
of life, for it spares neither age nor sex, but sweeps off
alike the brave, the beautiful, the graceful, and the gift
ed. By the help of that Supreme Being, from whom
cometh every good and perfect gift, I am enabled tooffer
to the afflicted a permanent and speedy cure in Con
sumption. The first cause of tubercles is from Impure
Blood, and the immediate effect, produced by their depo
sition in the lungs, is to prevent the free admission of
air into the air -cells, which causes a weakened vitality
through the entire system. Then, surely, it is morn ra
tional to expect greater good from medicines entering
the cavitios of the lungs ' than from those administered
through the stomach ; the patient will always find the
lungs free and the breathing easy, after inhaling reme
dies. True, inhalation is a local remedy, nevertheless,
it nets constitutionally, and with more power and cer
tainty than remedies administered by the stomach. To
prove the powerful and direct influence of this mode of
administration, chloreforni inhaled will destroy sensibil
ity in a few minutes, paralyzing the entire nervous sys
tem, so theta limb maybe amputated without the slight
eat pain; inhaling theordinary burning gas will destroy
life in slew hours.
The inhalation of ammonia willrouse the system when.
fainting or apparently dead. The odor of many of the
medicines is perceptible in the skin, a few moments af
ter being inhaled, and may be immediately detected in
the blood. A con-riming proof of the constitutional ef
fects of inhalatiOn, is the fact that sickness is always pro
duced by breathing foul air. is not this positive evi
dence that proper remedies, carefully prepared and judi
ciously administered through the lungs, should produce
the most happy results l During eighteen years' prac
tice, many thousands, suffering from diseases of the
lungs and throat, have been under my care, and I have
effected many remarkable cures, even after the sufferers
had been pronounced in the last stages, which fully sat
isfies me that Consumption is no longera fatal disease.—
My treatment of Consumption is original, and founded
on long experience and a thorough investigation. My
perfect acquaintance with the nature of tubercles, &c.,
enables me to distinguish, readily, the various forms of
disease that simulate consumption, and apply the proper
remedies, rarely being mistaken even in a single case.—
This familiarity, in connection with certain pathological
and microscopic discoveries, enables me to relieve
the lungs from the effects of contracted cheits ; to en ,
large the chest, purify the blood, impart to it renewed vi
tality. giving energy and tone to the entire system.
Medicines, with full directions, sent to any part of the
United States and Canadas, by..Mitients communicating
their symptoms by letter. But the cure would be more
certain if the patient should pay me a visit, which
would give ine an opportunity to examine the lunge and
enable me to prescribe with much greater certainty ;
and then the cure could be effected without my seeing
the patient again.

con be effected by any other treatment, even after the
disease has baffled the skill of eminent physicians and re
sisted all their means ofcure. The medicines are pleas
ant without odor, causing no sickness and free from
mercury or balsam. During twenty years of practice, I.
have rescued from the Jaws of Death many thousands,
who, in the last stages of the above-mentioned dioceses,
bad been given up to die by their physicians, which war
rants me in promising to the afflicted, who may place
themselves under my care, a perfect and most speedy
cure. Secret Diseases are the greatest enemies to health.
as they are the firs [cause of Consumption, Scrofula and
many other diseases, and should be a terror to the hu
man family. As a permanent cure is scarcely ever ef.
Meted, a majority of the cases falling into the bends of
incompetent persons, who not only fail to cure the dis
eases but ruin the constitution, filling the system - with
mercury, which. with the disease, hastens the sufferer
into a rapid Consumption.
But should the disease and the treatment not cause
death speedily and the victim marries, the disease is en
tailed upon the children, who are born with feeble con
stitutions and the current of life corrupted by a virus
which betrays itself in Scrofula. fetter, Ulcers, Erup
tions and other affections of the Skin, Eyes, Throat and
Lungs, entailing upon them a brief existence of suffer
ing and consigning them to an early grave.
SELF ABUSE is another formidable enemy to health,

opment of the system, disqualifies for marrirge, society,
business, and all earthly happiness, and leaves the suf
ferer wrecked in body or mind, predisposed to Consul:up,
than and a train of evils more to be dreaded than death
itself. Will, the fullest confidence I assure the unfortu
nate victims of Self Abuse thUt a permanent and speedy
cure can-be-effected, end with the abandonment of ruin
ous practices my patients can be restored to robust, vig
orous health.
The - afflicted are cautioned against the use of Patent
Medicines. for there are so many ingenious snares in the
columns of the public prints to catch and rob the unwary
sufferers, that millions ham their. constitutions ruined
by the vile compounds of quack doctors, or the equally
poisonous nostrums vended as ' , Patent Medicine." I
have carefully analyzed many of the so-called Patent
Medicines. and find that nearly all of them contain Cor
rosive Sublimate, which is one of the strongest prepara
tions of mercury and a deadly poison, which. instead of
curing the disease, disables the system for life.
Three-fourths of the patent nostrums now in use are
put up by unprincipled and ignorantpersons who do not
understand even the alphabet of the MATER& MEDICt,
and are equally as destitute of any knowledge of the hu
man system, having one object only in view, and that to
make money regardless of consequences.
