An honest biography ia one of the noblest
works of the writer of literature. A thor
oughly reliable biography of Garfield will
take high rank iu English classic. No sub
ject can more surely inspire the pen with
eloquence, nor more certainly convey to the
youth hemic endurance, lofty patriot ihm, and
final realization of the noblest ambition. To
convey a proper idea of its moral grandeur,
all coin muu -place words are impotent. r
Dr. Bid ath is a pmfessor of belles-lettres;
an exKrt in the science of language; on
essayist of enviable reputation; one of the
most eminent of living historians; nnd he1
not only brings to thia work a heart full of
love and reverence for its subject, but a mind
completely stored w ith Its lore, nnd capable
of using it to the liest advantage. Advance
sheets, which we have examined, indicate
careful prepnmtion, nnd are evidently the
work of a ripe scholar, and a most fascinating
writer, lsith of which term ngree with the
reputation already established by the learned
author.
Wc are persuaded that this is the work
the Americnn people want as a iiennancnt
memorial of Garfield ; nnd that, compared
with the cheap and flimsy so-called biogra
phies of the great dead wilh w hich the conn
try is now flooded, it alone is worth reading
or preserving. So far as our observation ex
tends, this is true. The catch-penny liooks,
made njnm the spur of the occasion simply
to sell, nre hasty compilation from newspa
per articles or camjiaign manuals rcvunipcd.
Itndly arranged nnd cheaply put logetber,
and will not stand the test of critical exami
nation. They are not worthy of a place in
any family library, and nre practically a fraud
upon purchasers.
We feel sure thut in buying a record of the
life of one whose services added fresh lustre
to the American name, a majority of our
reader desire the lest, and that they will lie
letter pleased to wait a reasonable time for
its preparation by au author known to be
coniM'tcnt and conscientious in his lal sirs,
than to purchase au anonymous volume hast Hy
compiled from questionable authority, un
couth in its nppeurnnce, its expressions, and
illustrations. We are informed that agents
in all (tarts of the country arc now taking
orders for it, nnd that it pmmise an unpre
cedented sale.
MR. LUTHER EXPLAINS.
.
Etinnit Bi:ri tu n an Ihnr Sir: Will
you please allow me a little spai-e in your
pjqHT to correct a false impression given by
the contemptible editor of the Curwensville
'J'imm. During the past week I have receiveil
si' vend copies of the Timrn from my friends in
different parts of the county, containing the
following :
'i'mf. V. S. Luther Mas married lust week.
All we've got to say of Luther is he 11 never
get along well until he calls ot this office nnd
pays two little wcoiint wc have ngaiust him.
One for suliscriptioii and one for programme
oft he closing exen-ises oft he Pennville Normal
School."
Now, Mr. Editor, I don't pnitse to give
my opinion of the insignificant human form
that presides over the Timrn, but give the facts
to the ftcople and let them judge his actions
for themselves. I ot programme printed at
the Wmoiotlice, as time would not permit me
to get them from Clcarlleld to distribute iu
time for the close of school. 1 called the
following week at the oltiee to my for them,
but no one was to lie (bund. I called twice
since, when at Curwensville, but found no
one each time. Once when I nil Jed, Mr.
Kaust told me that Bniinard wus away, but
that some of the olhcc Isiys were in town. 1
waited at Mr. Faust's store over two hours to
tind some one to pay the "account" to, but no
one was to le found. I then wnttc to
Hrainunl to send me a bill of the pnigramnie
and I would send him the money. But he
didiHit send it. As tothrsultscriplioii, 1 never
suhscrilied for his paper. It was sent to me.
and I tmid Brninnrd nt the Hhaw J louse in
Clearfield. Decemls-r Mint, 174 nnd took a
receipt lor it. If he has any other sultscrip
tion account I knew nothing of it.
If Hrflinnrd will send me the accounts I
will send him the mono v. 1 have a little
account of e-"" against Brainard, that has
lieen standing for over eight years, and w hich
limitation has cancelled. J never expect to
get it; but Brainard' money is ready any
time he lets me know the amount. 1 have
had printing done nt the Bkitw.ican,
Journal, Cittun, DuBois Courier nnd Osceola
fieretlte oil ices, and I believe that none ot
them have lost anything by non-payment yet.
These nre the facts, nnd Brainard 'a meanness
is now left to the public.
Yours, respectfully,
W. S. Lt'THCH.

"ARBOR DAY."
To thr Public .
Believing that the school property of the
county can U made more attractive by plant
ing suitable shade tree upon the school
grounds, I have decided to set apart Satur
duv.Novemlier Pith, as "Arltor Dny,'nt which
time I invite the teachers, directors, pupils
and parents of each school district in the
county to meet together at one o'clock in the
afternoon nnd select and plant a nuHk-icnt
number ot shade trees, at the same lime pro
vide means for their protection. 1 also
recommend that teac hers (where it has not
nllrendv len done) dti-orate their school
rooms on the dny mentioned. I here is noth
ing that speaks lietter for a community than
attractive nnd well-protected school property,
and nothing that apcukn better for teacher
and pupils than a school-room tastefully
delimited.
Will teachers please seo that this invitation
is dulv circulated in their resjieetivc districts,
and ns earlv as Noveinlwr loth, send nie
the names of nil persons participating.
