Potatoes cannot be very scarce over in
Cambria county. The Chcrrytre Krecrd
says that over fifteen hundred bushels of po
tatoes were produced on the Cambria county
Four House farm this season.

occupied by John Uvingston. Mr. Livingston

Show, arrived at home on Wednesday last.

received favorable notices from the press

Brookvillo on Tuesday last nnd has gone

Contention of Suponntendentt. State Suis-r-intendent
Highee has issued a circular call
ing a Convention of all the Suierintcndcnts
of public schools of the western counties of
the State to meet in Pittsburgh on the Kith
of January next to continue in session for
three days. A Convention of the remaining
counties is culled to meet in Heading on the
17th day of January. It is the design of the
Slate SiiA intendcnt to gather such informa
tion from jiniers read before the Convention
as to enable the mnking of the proicr codifi
cation of the school laws of the State.
Dead. John Cutler, Jr., son of John Cut
ler, Sr., of this place, died at Altoona last
Thursday of typhoid fever, after Illness of
one week, in the 2oth year of his age. He
leaves a wife, but no children. The railroad
authorities refused to take the remains on
the train for shipment to this place, and they
were buried in the cemetery nt Altoona. The
deceased obtained employment at the rail
road shops in Altoona several weeks ago,
where he was working at the time he took
ill, and w here he went by the name of "James
Cnaiet."

Fruit and Blossomt at tha Sam$ Timt.
Nearly every one of our exchanges contain
items of cherry, apple and other kinds of
trees being in bloom in their respective neigh
borhoods. The latest ia from the Cheirytree
Rrrord, as follows: "Mr. A. C. Hrillhart, of,
Runiside township, Clearfield county, sends
us a number of very large apples and almncli
of blossoms, of which he says : 'The tree from
which I have taken these applesand blossoms
has not failed for several successive years to
produce at this season of the year, both apples
and blossoms. Hut on account of the severe
drought the apples are not so largo or the
blossoms so fragrant or numerous as they
usunlly are."
A Man Killed at Loci Haitn.K mysterious
death occurred at Lock Haven nt 10:30 o'clock
Saturday night. Jonas Zindle is the pro
prietor of the Farmer's Hotel, on Church
street. Samuel Hlair, who was under the in
fluence of liquor, hnd lieen quarreling in the
liar-room and Xindle walked him outside.
Instantly there was a heavy thud heard on
the Hivemcnt. indie's wife ran out nnd
found her husband lying in the street. Hlair
was on his hands and knees but got up and
ran ofT. Mrs. Zindle railed for help and it
was then found that Xindle was dead, the
right side nf hia moc being terribly bruised.
Hlair was arrested at his home at midnight.
An Inquest commenced on Sunday but was
ailjourned until Monday.

Infant Snakol. Ferdinand Hoffman and
brother, who reside in Pineereek township,
Jefferson county, near Hnsikvillc, are at
the Fair this week with nine live rattlesnakes,
measuring resjiect fully from 30 to 50 inches
in length. Mr. I lolluinn has visited the
Hnsikville and Parker City Fairs this season
and handled his pits In thesight of hundreds
of js'iiple, never having received any harm.
One. of the largest snakes gnve birth to
fourteen little rattlers three or four days ago.
Mrs. Snake and fonrof theeliildren are doing
well, ten of the offsprings having died. A
wolf and a Jack rulibit from lb" western
plains also travel with thia show. When you
visit the Fair grounds this week do not forget
to visit the School of Natural History. Ad

loss by fire on Monday afternoon. October: Jd
The Philiiisburg Journal snys ; "On Monday
afternoon, an addition, 2lx(Kl feet, built to J.
F. Steiner's residence which was used for a
wash house, servant's sloping Mom, wood,
coal, ice, and carriage house, In connection
with the Isirn, wiisdcetniyrd by fire, together
with fifteen tons of hsy, one hundred and fifty
bushels of oats, forty bushels shelled corn and
a lot of straw and three good heating stoves,
and many other things which were In the
burned buildings. The house was in Immi
nent danger, and had, it not been for the
strenuous efforts of the crowd who gathered
to save the property, the large and elegant
homestead would have aurrunihrd lo the
element of nsifliigratinn. Indeed, one can,
hardlr imagine how they managed toaae It
yet It was dime, and the almost super-human
efforts of those present may be said to have
lieen the reason. Msny things were taken
out of (he house, and in the hurry and excite
ment of the moment, much damage was done

HUNTINGDON PRESBYTERY.
Tlie Presbytery of Huntingdon held it
regular Fall meetiug at Spruce Creek, in
Huntingdon county, on Tuesday, Wednnsday
and Thursday of last week. Her. II. 8. Butr
ler and Elder J. B. Graham represented the
Clearfield congregation. We are Indebted to
the Altoona 7ViisM for the follow ing synopsis
of the proceedings :
Her. K. F. Wilson, of Port Royal,as elected
Moderator. The opening sermon was preached
by liev. J. J. Francis, of Birmingham, and was
a Ane effort.
A collection amounting to thirty-six dollars
was taken op for home and foreign missions.
liev. John Rutler, a returned Chinese
missionary, delivered an address on mission
work in China.
liev. Thomas Iiobinson was dismissed to
the Presbytery of Freeport.
liev. K. 11. Miller, of Osceola, being unable
to preach, memliers of the Presbytery agreed
to till his pulpit at their own expense until
April 1st
The church at Miflliutown asked: First,
What constitutes a member in good and regu
lar standing? Second, What kind of a cer
tificate can be grautcd to a person not in good
standing? Answer: First, Any person who
has lieen received either on examination or
by letter is to lie considered in good standing
until by actual judicial process he is sus
pended or expelled ; second, That memliers
not in good standing are not entitled to any
certificate.
The committee appointed to adjust the
differences between the Mifflintown and Lost
Creek congregations were instructed to con
tinue their efforts.
liev. W. J, Gibson resigned the pastorate
of the Duncansville and Martlnshurg con
gregations. The Stated Clerk was instruct
ed to prepare a minute in reference to
this long and faithful pastorate.
It was ordered that each church session revise
its roll of mcmtiership and report nt each
Spring meeting of Presbytery.
Ninety-live memliers of the Second Presby
terian Church, of Altoona, presented a peti
tion asking to organize a third church,
lieferred to a committee consisting of lievs.
X. (1. White, of Williamsburg, J. II Blathers,
of Hcllwood, and Klder Samuel McCamont,
who wilt meet the parlies on next Tuesday,
October 11th.
liev. McKiiight Williamson was received
from the Presbytery of SU Claintville and
accepted a call from the Church of Bethel.
Mr. David Hasel, a licentiate from the Phila
delphia Presbytery, was received and he and
Mr. J. V. Hell were sulwequently ordained to
the ministry. The minority were not satisfied
with Mr. Bell's views on church government
and filed a protest. Mr. Bell having accepted
a call from the church nt Penllehl, arrunge-
menta were made for his installation in No
vember. Tlie next stated meeting will be held with
the Ilollidaysliurg church. An adjourned
meeting will lie held at Clearfield duringthe
session of Synod, commencing on the t?0th
instant.
United Brethren Conference. The annual
meeting of the Allegheny Conference of the
United Brethren church closed its sessions at
AltiMinn on Monday of last week, after being
in session for u week. The meetings were
quite interesting, and a large amount of busi
