Of honest convictions and sincere purposed he devoted himself to the cause of the muster he professed to n rve with earnest ness, energy and ability, and never sought to become a political leader or any tort of med dler in secular aftaira, for which, indeed, he seemed to have little concern. He was always therefore, popular wherever located and very efficient in the cause to which he was devoted. He was an honest man and wad everywhere respected for hid frankness and integrity. Devolfd only to hid mission, like an honest man that he wad, he readily found enough to do in that to occupy all hid time and all his thoughts, and none for other purpose. He wad therefore a successful servant of the Iord and he will have his reward. He was a son of the late John Wilson, of Ijimni." Our Minora! Our venerable townsman, Josinh W. Smith, Esq., had Messrs. Itoolh & (iarret, chemists, Philadelphia, analyze the water of thia spring at hisownexjs'nse. It is strongly im pregnated with gaa, and contains many virtual and medicinal qualities. The result of the nnalvsis id as follows: In a gallon of the water the solid matter is tt (Vr-lou grains. Besides publishing the proclamation for the election on water, we printed the same in the form of posters, nnd therefore our charge is not as excessive in proportion as that of the sheet complaining. Yes, you always accepted pro)Mmitions fur work at lower prices in order to get tho job, us you admit in reference to your hwt con tract, "there is no profit to the printer in ad vertising for the Isimugh." We won't do that. We propose to make a living at the business we are in, legitimately and fairly, and if we can't do that we will close up the establishment and engage in something else. A publisher and printer, likeotherniechiuiica and professional men too is compelled to make some profit out of his labor, and when he doesn't do that, when he works for noth ing, for the sake of the dear people, he will either be compelled to hold a festival or cheat someliody. We want profit enough on our work over and alsive the cost of the ma terial used to pay the contingent exjrenses nf the office such as light, lulr and rent. "There is no profit to the printer in adver tising for the tiorough under this new con tract, but there ui a saving of several hundred dollars a year to the taxpayers." tStiznt. Readers and tux payers, just imagine, if you can, the ewnomy and accomoiodation mani- j fested by this big-hearted young man ! Whenever a fellow gets ao magnanimous that he w ill work fur nothing, in order to save "several hundred dollars a year to the tax payers," in our estimation, that fellow needs to be watched least he gets away with some Issly else's pocket-hook. There may be peo ple in this age who do everything and give everything for the sake of "saving several hundred dollars a year to the taxpayers," but they don't live fa this section of the State. He begged for the liorongh printing, and,, having secured it, he now confesses there is no profit in it to the printer; and had he no restraints upon his unselfish spirit and economical good management, we are mightily afraid there would be no profit in it for the citizens of Clearfield borough. We put in no "hid" for the Isirough printing, for the reason that we have little faith In the way that such bids are disposed of. It would have made no difference what price we would have put in, Ilixler would have gone MJ cents lower after ascertaining the amount of each bid in order to carry off the Job. We are not compelled to "put in a bid" and work for nothing. We don't propose to kill time in that way. While the fiifl is doing work for the lwrough and "saving hundreds of dollars a year to thetaxpayers," we will work at something that will pay expenses at all events. If he can stand his prices, we arc very sure that we can, as we have all the work we can well attend to at our regular rates, the rates we have been charging for years. Yea, Ilix ler, you can have all such contracts. We do not wish to be considered at all selfish in that respect. The above are some of the sample declara tions of the refined and dictatorial editor of the Citizen. We do not complain of his charges. He can charge just w hat he pleases. We take exceptions, however, to his regulating our business and publishing lies about us, when he is not capable of regulating his own. He publishes uncalled for criticisms nf the oldest and most respected citizens of the borough; he is always abusing some one, perhaps because they have offended him or some one of his patrons; he regulates the busincm of our Courtd, and attempts to regu late the time when they should or should not sit ; he goes smelling around the hack-doors of kitchens and publishes the gossip and secrets of the household, and in fact he indiscretcly publishes everything that is abusive of his neighbors, but never com mends them for any good they may do. Shame ! . By the way, what does your tux hill per annum amount to since you have lived in Clearfield county? Mtw Dai If Stagt Lino. Jamea L.
