Dieastroue Runaway.- Early on Monday
morning last, as the team of F. M. and F. C.
Cardan, hitched to a wagon containing two
grain-drills, was left standingon the street in
front of the residence of Fred Cardon, on
Cherry street, while the driver was awaken
ing Mr- Cardon, they started off at a furions
rate and ran away, taking down that street
towards the river, and in turning the comer
at the Episcopal Church, upset the wagon
and grain-drills against the Park fence, tear
ing a greater portion of the vehicle and the
drills lying there a complete wreck. The
fence was not damaged. The horses, with
the front gearing of the wagon, continued
along First street to the residence of the edi
tor of this paper, and finally hung up on the
steps in front of his house, after colliding
with a small shade tree in front of W
M. Shaw a residence. Here the terrified ani
mals were captured, Ik? ing entangled so as to
render any further progress Impossible.
The damage done at the latter place was
slight, but it will take at least $100 to make
good the loss of the Cardon Brothers. Several
of Mr. Iaae Johnson's npple trees on Cherry
street, near where the team started were
badly peeled.

INFORMATION WANTED.
Mk. Editor: In your issue of August 3d
it is stated that there was an insurance of
$11,000 on the Shaw House and furniture.
The adjusters arranged the losses, and the
estate receiving nearly $H,:t00. The huildng
cost about f'JI,00O. Was the building not
destroyed? The impression is out that the
Shaw House was a total destruction. Will
not some one of the Insurance Companies
explain to the people of the county how this
is? On what prilicipledothe a(MWentadiust
their accounts t What became of the f"J,7O0
insurance that was refused to the estate? It
is in justice to the insurance business that
the people understand more about the work
ing of the thing when losses are sustained.
SELF-INTER (WT.

Not being versed In the Insurance busi
ness we cannot answer our correspondent in
letail, because of ths lock of inside informa
tion. He hud better address some expert in
the insurance business. Wo did lcaru, on
the Mtreety that the adjuster charged fifteen
jter rent, for the "wear and tenr" of the build
ing since the insurance was put upon it ; and
so much for brick and cut-stone saved. That
is what is "adjusting' after a fire. The build
ing is totally destroyed, and, in our judg
ment , the material is not w urth the handl ing.

sign his name bit he article, clearly iudicating
tlutt he is devoid of manly principle in thus
attacking me without knowing the facts in

As to my "home and people, I am not
