since the other buildings were destroyed by

one of the largest and one of the best mines
opened in the Clearfield region, but long ugo
abandoned for wuut of skill and scientific
engineering, has been reclaimed by Scott A
Kizer, and arrangements made to commence
work at re-opening, on Monday. This will
be the means of bringing another railroad into
Osoeola, and will add considerably to the
coal out-put on the Tyrone and Clearfield
branch. ' '

with a slight mishap lost Wednesday even
ing within a mile and a-holf of town, near
the junction of the Flegul rood. One of the
hind wheels gave way rather suddenly, on us
ing the coach, a covered vehicle, to go over

of the passengers received some bruises, but

ballot-box. There were 270 vote polled, and
the vote stood 245 for "water tax 25 "against
water tax." The vote was larger than we
anticipated. Now let the good work go on.
The strong wind that blew a continual gale
all day on Saturday, filling the air and houses
with dust, which with the Intense heat and
continual drouth, may have had something to
do with Influencing the voters in favor of
water by a large mnjority,

Vennor, the Canadian weather prophet, has
ventured upon another prediction of a posi
tive kind. He says "we may expect a great
change in the wealhcrahout the time the new
some Is in its perihelion, when ft will be
also nearest the earth. This will occur on
the 30th of the present month. During the
time from the 15th to the 20th of the present
month, instead of being burned up, aa we
might expect, he says we shall be nearly
frown by frosts and strong, cold northerly
winds."

Mr. Wootridgo was awakened by the bark
ing of hn dog, and getting up to sue

timely discovery enabled tho flames to be
extinguished, but not until damage to the

A Mow Atothod. The Lewistown Democrnt
says: ''A valuable horse belonging to Col.
John B. Belheimer died on Monday hut. It
had tramped on a nail a short time since, the
wound thereof producing lock-jaw. In its
struggles the horse afterwords broke its leg,
and it was deemed best to kill it. To cud its
sufferings as humanely as posnible, cliloroform
was used. It is no easy operation to take the
life of a horse by chloroform, bnt Dr. McFad-
den performed it very successfully in this
case.'

county exchanges that Tuesday of last week
was the centennial anniversary of tlis Holli
day massacre, which occurred near Hollidaya
burg August 9th, 1781. While William
Holli day, accompanied by his sons Patrick
and Adum. and his daughter Janet was
taking in his crop, a volley was fired from
thicket, by which Patrick and Adum were
instantly killed. Eight or ten Indians then
sprung from the thicket and rushed upon
Hoi Inlay, who leaped upon a horse and
escaped. His daughter was barbarously
butchered with a hatchet
Bun Off. On Saturday afternoon, Gustave
Beonsigneur and Oil. Shaw, son of A. B.
Show, hitched a horse into a buggy at Shaw's
stable, and unfortunately buckled the lines
on to the homes. They then got into the
buggy, unconscious of the fate so soon to
overtake them. The horse became unmanage
able, and started out the alley at a lively gate.
The buggy collided with the telephone pole
at the corner of the alley and Pine street
near the residence of O. L. Moore, throwing
youug Beaukigncnr out, stripping the horse
of the horneas, and damaging the buggy to
some extent. Muster Shaw jumped out
beftu-u the collision. Take everything into
consideration the adventure resulted rather
fortunately for the lads, and no doubt thev
will profit by it.

Saturday of last week was a success, and the

living near Oakland Mills, Fayette township,
was kicked in the face by his home recently,

that Mr. Andrews was leading the horse by
the halter strap to water, when, It Is thought,
the hnrae, In a playful way kicked, striking
him in the face, cutting a deep gash on the
side of one of his eyes and mutilating his

ondition, we learn, nnlil his death. Mr.
Andrews was quite well known in thia com
munity. During the war he was ft member

Firo in tho Wood. A. fire was started in
the woods near Barrett's station Inst week,
and on Saturday aud Sunday the winds that
prevailed aided in spreading it rapidly in the
direction of Woodland. It threatened the
destruction of a large quantity of bark, logs,
and ether property, but hard work and vigi
lant watching prevented great loss, at least
like anything that wonltl undoubtedly have
occurred. A fire in Goshen township, started
from a clearing, created a good deal of alarm
and anxiety the past few days, and especially
on Saturday and Sunday. Considerable
fencing was bnmed on the farm of Alexan
der Rend, and his flirm buildings were hi
great danger of being destroyed, as was also
tho I xirn and saw mill of M.-0. Brown.
Great damage was also done to tlie growing
timber in that vicinity. The drouth that has
prevailed in tliis region for a month past has
caused everything to be as dry as tinder and
almost as susceptible of igniting.
"Foxy" 'Squtroof We happened to las in
the Commissioners' office several days ago
and heard the Board chiding a Justice of j
the Peace because of his excessive charges
against the county. Among other charges
was one of forty-five cents for a probate for
three young foxes that some neighlior had
dug out. The J. P. insisted that he was
entitled to fifteen cents for each fox. The
Board demurred. Tlie purties compromised,
after debating the question, hy allowing the
Hpiire the fee allowed by the Act of Assem
bly, vis : Fifteen cents for tack orriijicate.
Scarcely had the aforesaid J. P. left the office,
wnen in comes another (evidently more
learned in the law than the former) and pre
sented his bill of forty-five cents for three
young foxes, dug out by one of tile neigbWrn.
He had written tkrre probate one for each
and was, under the law, entitled to the fees.
We make a memorandum of these tntnsac
tions in order to show how Tiqn Ires will disa
gree on the fox question, and how pleasant It
is for the Commissioners to delnte with the
aforesaid snch a simple qnestion known to all
men. The J. P. who sits down and compiles
the probates on tho same sheet, and dates
them all alike, nnderstands the law and his
business, and is aware that the county is a
good paymaster.
FIREMEN'S MEETING.
In pursuance of a call for a citizens' meet
ing for the purpose of organizing a Firo De
partment a large assemblage convened in
tlie Court House on Monday evening, Au
gust 15th. The meeting was organized with
A. W. Walters as Chairman, and J. F. Mc-
Kenrick as Secretary.
On motion, W. W. Betts, Ash Thorn, Jack
Hullihan, E. A. Bigler, J. L Kragle, James
Kerr and AI. M. How, were constituted a
Committee on Membership, with power to
fill vacancies insnid Committee.
The following resolution was adopted to
govern the Committee in its work :

field, not being confined to the list submitted

HOUTZDALE HEARD FROM.
I noticed an article in the Vititrn two weeks
ago congratulating the officers of Houtzdale
on the good ttvltavior and prosperity of the
uorougn. many oi ns can see no improve
ment in the morals or general condition
of the borough. 1 acknowledge that there is
a good flow of money into the treasury,
derived from license, fines, Ac, amounting to
arsini fiou per month. The Income is suf
ficient to keen the borniifrh in a irood financial
condition without collecting any borough
tax. I regret to say that not one cent of all
this money goes to improve or benefit the
norongn in way whatever. The present coun
cil hito invented an offitw or oflirea that lick
up every cent of the income. We have a
Police officer at IMiper month, Burgess at the
some price, Town Clerk with salary and
percentage that amounts from $10 to $lfl per
month, engineer at $12.50 per month, office
rent for Burgess $:i.il per month .and the treas
urer's percentage for receiving from and pay
ing hack the money to the officers takes the
oaiance, as near as we can figure it up. I
have come to the conclusion, that when it
costs all a thing is worth to collect it, and
more, too, it istime to giveit np. The "com
mercial traveler" and unlucky "drunk" might
as welt have the money as to have it pocketed

-Tlie details of a sieeulatfve life insurance
case was given to the fmhlic at Vt il bam sport
last week, as follows: "Joseph Miller, aged
74 years, resided with his son Hnmuel in a
lonely spot near the hase of Its Id Kagle
Mountain, In Clinton township, Lycoming
county. One day week before last he died
suddenly and was hurriedly buried the next
lay. Huspicion was aroused among the
neighbors that there was something wrong.
This suspicion was also shared hy another
son named John, who, knowing that his
lirother held a policy on his father for f!,iH0
and that other parties carried more than
$30,1(00 on his life, felt that there should he
an investigation. The body was disinterred
and a post mortem examination mode by Trr.
William Adams, which was so conclusive
that the Jury rendered a verdict that Joseph
Miller came to his death hy poison adminis
tered hy his son Harauel. The stomach of
osed, which gave ample evidence of
poison, was secured and brought to the city
for analysis. Hsmnel Miller was arrested for
the rrime, but he protested his Innocence with
great vehemence. The family consists of
boys, and considerable Jealousy is said to ex
ist among them, and as this one wan left a
small piece of land by his father, he msy he
tho victim of a conspiracy. ''
