Comino to Till r RoNT. An ex
change says; "Sonator Voorhcen told
a roporter that the representation of:
tbo South in Congroca now is higher
In the aggregate of talent, than before
the war, and that Sonator Garland, for
example, 'despite the legal reputation
of Tburman, McDonald, David Davis,
and others, is universally acknowledg
ed to bn the best read, boat equipped
lawyer in tho United States Senate.' "
I'osTofFici Thiives. An exchange
relates the following: ''More evidonce
as to the star postul route swindlers
has been discovered. It now appears
that the ringstcrs used all tboir influ
ence to have Garfield appoint a Pout
inantor Genoral of thoir own kidney,
but failed. Thon thoy tried their ut

the place of Brady, but again failed.
Now they are working with pertinacity
and skill to avoid conviction and im
prisonment. Tbo late developments
show that lioute No. 32,024 running
from Vinita, Indiana Tcritory, to Las
Vegas, New Mexico, was 'expedited'
and raised from tho original contract

skillful munipulutioo."
No DasniK. Tho seeming levity iu
the article found on our first pogo, en
titled "Garfield und Grunt Shaking
Hands," was all prepared and set up
bef'oro the hoirihlo attempt of the
assassination of President Garfield.
While Mr. Lambert, tho correspondent
of the Philadelphia Timet, and oursell
wore enjoying a scanidc vacation and
discussing newspaper men nnd affuirs
at the Ocean Hotel (Loland's) at Long
Branch two weeks ago, wo novor
dreamed thut there was an assassin
moving around among us souking an
opportunity to murder the President
of the United Slates. Itut recent
events establishes the fact that Gui
teau at that time hid actually follow
ed tho President to Long Branch with
the intention of Murdering him.
Tiia Attkmit to Assassisath the
President. Ten days have elapsed
Bince tho attempt was made by liuileau
to take the life of President Garfield,
in the Baltimore & i'otoinao Railroad
depot at Washington City, a full and
complete statement of which Is given
in the supplement accompanying this
issue, and he con'.invcs to improve as
be has done every hour since the shoot
ing occurred. The insanity of the as.
sassin, Charles J. (iuiteau, has not
been firmly enough established to save
him lrom suffering tho penalty, which
should bo severely inflicted. The Pres.
ident is not entirely out of danger yet,
but the chances lor recovery are largo
ly in his favor.
Stalwart Kixarks. Tho Pitts
burgh Telegraph makes the following
practical romarks : "in votoing tho bill
giving f 10,0(10 to the town of Milton
with which to erect school buildings in
place of those destroyed by the fire
there, the Governor says that if he
wore to allow it to become a law the
richer portion of the people of Milton
would get tbe chief benefit of it. Ho
might nave added that a community so
genorously doalt with as the one in
uestion was by private generosity just
after its misfortune, should not have
made any demands upon the State.
Money poured into the town then, and
when all reasonable wants of tho peo
plo wore supplied, thousands of dollars
remained unexpended in the hands of
the trustees, who know not what to do
with it, Milton should buve been satis
fied with that. Jn any event, it is well
enough that the Governor sets his foot
down on a achemo which takes It for
granted that tbe Treasury of the State
is an Insurance lend npon which un
lucky towns may draw at tbe will of
the Legislature. Lot towns do as in-
dividuala, and insure themsolves, or
provide better means than Milton had
against tbe possibilities of fire.

a very narrow escape from what might
. have been a fatal accident. 1 he train
that brought Mrs. Garflold from Long

rullmancar. hen within two miles
of liowie, a email station 16 mile from
Washington, tbe parallel rod on the
aide of the engine broke while the
w boots were making at least 250 rovo
lutions a minuto. Tbe rod is a steel
bar which connects tbe wheels, and is
aliout 12 feet long, 6 inches wide, and
four inches thick. As the engine con
tinued to thunder along, although the
engineer immediately reversed the
steam and put on the air-brakes, the
broken rod bounced with each revolu
tion of tbe wheels, tore np the tics and
considerably damaged that side of the
engine. Tbit continued for abont two
miles before slop could be effocted,
so great a headway bad been acquired.
An eye-witness states that as the train
flew by Bowie station the splinters
of the shattered ties filled the air. 11 sd
the engine left the track the Pullman

Iowa. I left Philipsburg on tho 7th
of June, and reached Sioux City on
the morning of tho 10th. 1 remained
in Sioux City a week, waiting lor the
railroad to lankton to no iriiatreil.
and enjoyed my visit in that city very
mm h. l should ludgu thut nioux Citv
contains about I'.OiMl inhabitants. It
is a lively, active town, containing five
railroads, large machino shops, many
large business buildings, fine residences,
handsome streets, anil life enough for
a city double its air.e.
1 urn now in
YANKTON,
tho Capital city of Dakota Territory.
This is a town of about 4,000 popula
tion, situated on tho north bank ol tho
Missouri river, on land slightly raised,
though level, Tbe city presents a very
pretty appearance, und cannot holp
but please the stranger. Yankton has
somo fine streets and respectable brick
buildings. A largo brick Court llotiso
serves tho double purpose of a Temple
ol Justice ana Cupitol. J his is un
questionably a city of churches and
schools, and by this you can readily
infer thut society is good, intelligence
not lucking, nor morality at as low an
ebb as many suppose it is lu tho West.
1 nnn this city xiirroumled by u good
agricultural and grazing country, ami
what helps this purticulur part of the
Territory out is its lurgo forest ol
timber along its rivers.
I hare passed several times down
the valley lor sixty-ono miles over the
country that was flooded lBt April
Tbe valley of the Missouri is from throe
to ten miles wide, and as thut whole
area from here to Sioux City (01 miles')
was under water lrom nve to nlleen
feet deep, the damage to properly,
both real and personal, has been greut
Many beautiful farms are now simply
sand bars, housoless and tcnantltss,
and where roamed large herds ol cattle
and horses, can seldom bo seen an nni
mill. But the section flooded was only
a very small part of the beautiful land
of Southern llakota.
People bore seem to bo prosperous
and busy. The industrious generally
get in comfortable circumstances in a
lew years. Tbe man succeeds hero
who pushes and looks out for himself.
n eenv men hnvo no hnsincss in Ihisi
country.
Tho inhabitants of this section lire
generally eastern born. Among tho
leading citizens of Yankton 1 find sev
eral representatives of tho old Key
stone State: Kx-Governor Faulk, of
Kittunning. Hon. P. C. .Shannon, Chief
Justko of Dakota, formerly of Pitts
burgh, W. II. and J. C. McVcy, and
S. D. Coulson, also residents of Pitts
burgh, are all leading men who arc
making it coin in tho West.
There are villains and sharks here
as well as elsewhere. 1 have spent
considerable lime at Court watching
tho course of a trial ol the United
States nguinst J. D. Cameron, who was
indicted for swindling liomesleuders
and tho Government out of land by
tho wholesale. Ile is ceituinly an ed
ucated swindler, though the jury dis
agreed, und he thus gets his liberty
some months longer. I havo no doubt
he will be finally convicted.
Thero aro no fcnecB around farms
here, and, a a conseijuence, cattle and
horses aro either herded or "picketed."
As my down Kast friends may not un
derstand what "picketed" means, 1
will cxpluin by saying that a slake is
driven in the ground and a long rope
hitched to it and the animal tied lo
the otlar end. My first experience
with "picketing" was not very pleas
ant I can assure you. Tho third day
uftcr my arrival in Dakota a gentle
man invited me to tuko a rido. When
in tho country north of Yankton wo
drovo close by whore a horse was
grazing, when the first thing we know
our horso and buggy wero terribly
tangled in tho picket rope attached to
tho other animal. With considerable
trouble aud a copious two of profanity
on the part of my companion, wo got
out of tho trouble, but I shall long ro-
membor my nrst experience with
picket ropes in tho West.
In a few weeks 1 shall return to mv
old eastern home, and, if lime permits,
may give you oltior observations on
me vi est. cry truly.
