While aluent, her two. year old child crawled up
to the tub atd fell in. When the mother returned
she found th nbild drowned in the tub of water.
The grief of the parent can be Imagined, but not
described. The fate of this child should bo a
warning to all mothers.

TWO "LOVELY" EVENTS.
The society circles In Cnrwenivlllt and Clear
field were ecssldorably igltatod during Wadset-
day and Thursday of last week. The marriage
of W. C. llelmbold and Mlaa Fannie Arnold, both
of Curwensvllli, at the reiideioeof the bride's
parent i, o Wednesday, tbeSth In it, drew a large
ootnpany of friends together to witnoaa the affair.
The bride li a daughter of Mr. Bamuel Arnold,
aod a most estimable young lady, as the many
handsome and valuable presents she received fully
attested. The happy eonplo left in the afternoon
train on a wedding tour in the east.

although a heavy and disagreeable rain prevailed

Killed nr Lmhtnino. On Thurn
day afternoon last, May 25th, Levi Mottern and
bis son-io.law, J. B.Evans, their wives and Mot
(era's little boy, residents of Oliver townthip,
ware out In a field plautlng oom. About three
o'clock a thunder shower tuddenly came on, the
men being In one aide of the field and the women
in the other, and Mottern and Evans took shelter
from the rain under a large tree, near where tbey
had been working. A flash of lightning struck
the tree, killing them both instantly. Mottern
was nrt much disfigured or mangled by the I
stroke, but one of Erans' II rubs and his pants aod
boots were billy torn. The little bay who was
uite a distance off, was knocked to the ground

The thirtieth bl-eon lei con real ion of the Gen
eral Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church
of the United 8 la tee met la the First Lutheran
Church of Altoona on Wedneaday of last week,
and will probably adjourn to-day. This Synod
which Is pre-eminently the representative body
of tho English rpeaklog portion of the Lutheran
church, Is one of four large ecclesiastical organi
sations of the church In thia country and reprf-
Bents about 1200 clergymen, 1500 churches, and a
membership ofovor 100,000. This august body Is
composed of about 150 delegatoa, representing 37
or 2 distrlot Synods, and with visitors, together
with ladles at tea ding the Convention, of the Wo
man's Home and Foreign Missionary Society,
also In session in that city, there was probably an
average attendance of fonr hundred atrangera In
daily nttendanoe open Hi sessions.
The Synod la extensively engaged In the work
of foreign mission a, principally eon fin log its
operationa in that direction to India and Africa,
aod In the work of home minions beyond the
Mississippi. Besides the missionary work, In
which the oh arch under the Jurisdiction of this
Synod are engaged, the management and support
of several oollegea, theological seminaries, hospi
tals and charitable institutions of various kinds
devolve upon tho Synod, and the legislation nea.

tions, will form no small part of the business,
which will be brought before the body.

Strobel, tbo retiring President, taking for bis
text the sentences from Christ's lips : "I am tbo
light of tbe world ; Ye are tbe light ef the world."
The scrma was an able one, delivered with
force aud fervor. At the close of tbe sermon, tbe
Lord s prayer wae repeated by the congregation,
and the long metre doxology was aung.
Dr. Strobel, the retiring President, Is seventy
three years of age, Is tine oldest member of the
Synod, and has beea fifty-two years la tbe
ministry.

When the Fanokean Synod was called a dele
gate made inquiry aa to whether the Brood bad
adopted tbe Rsvlecd Constitution of the (loners!
Synod. The query was rafted as to whether
neglect to adopt said Constitution debarred Lhem
from adtaiislon to the Uensral Synod. The
President deeided that Article t, Section 1, was
broad enough to admit the Synod. The Section
provides that "The General Synod shall ton slit
of tbe Clerical and Lay Delegates from the lev-1
oral districts Synods of the Evangelical Lutheran
Church la the t'nlted States which are now eon
n acted with It or may hereafter join themselves
thereunto. ' Tbey were accordingly admitted to
seats.
