Brewer is Dead. Many of those
who twenty-five or thirty years ago were conveyed
In four-horse coaches from Clearllald to Lewis-
town, afte rwards to Tyrone and Bandy Ridge,
and then Pbilipslurg, will remember that safe
and accommodating driver, Montgomery Brewer.
He was found dead In tbe barn of the Loyd
House, la Pbilipsburg, a few days ago. We otten
heard the Inquiry made at ibe hotels, "What
morning does Brewer go out!" This arose from
his tBtefulueri as a driver, at. 4 he nearly always
bud ibe bet team on ttertad. It was seldom

Hon. 1C. L. Blood is lyinit daujer-

dlseaeed leg. We are sory to hear of bis illness.
Mr. Blood te perhaps more widely known than
any other man in Jefferson county. The Brook

lowing Item : "On Th orsday after soon last, Dr.
PaoooasCef Philadelphia, reached Brookville,
fur the purpose of assisting In the amputation of
K. L. Blood's leg. A Her an examination of Mr.
Blood, It was decided that be was not strong
enough to undergo the operation at present.
Some changes la his trealm eat were suggested,
aod the Doctor returned home the next day. As
soon as Mr. Blood has acquired strength enough
te stand the operation, we understand he will re
turn and assist In amputating tbe leg."
Night School. Prof. Dalbey clused
his second term of school in penmanship, held In
the Leonard Graded school building , on Wedoes1
day night last. Tbe prise for the most Improve
ment, this term in penmanship was awarded te
Ralph Read. Mr, Dalbey, In Ihe short time be
has been here has suoeeeded In working up quite
a feeling among the yoeng folks In the line of
penmanship. Tbe fact that he calls a seore or
more of tbem off the street for an hour each of
two or three nights during tbe week juit adds
that much to their met. hood and womanhood In
tbe future. His efforts at training the youthful
band to "fling the pen" In a graceful style sbenld
be taken up by others when be leaves. Every
effort should be made by parents to eall their chil
dren, from II to SO yean of age, off the street
at night and have tbem learn something useful
for life.

How to Get Up a Fourth of July.
A writer in tbo New York Ooserver suggests
tbot tho Fourth of July should bo celebrated
this year more appropriately than usual. He
gives a pleasant account of the family exercises,
con tit ting of prayer singing, reading the Declara
tion of Independence, remarks on tho spirit and
results of tbo Revolution, tho goodness of God
and our duties to Him as aXeHonand individuals.
The same plan It recommended to all communities,
especially In tho country towns. "It is well to
celebrate tbo doy. It ought never to be pessed
undistinguished. If a family cannot nnlte with
other families let tbo observance be domestic )
but It Is better to bo social, public, united. Two
articles may well bo dispensed with that aro sow
very common on tbat day, powder and Intoxl
eetlng drink. Tbey add nothing to tbo patriotic
feelings of anybody, but tbey are ovll, and only
evil"
