On Saturday evening last, a terrible and de structive wind storm, accompanied with rain, struck our town between 8 and 0 o'clock, doing a great deal of damago to many of our Luildings and destroying trees and fences. It was perhaps the most severe that ever visited Clearfield. It o.une up very suddenly and spent its fury in less than tea minutes ; but tho wind continue! to blow a strong gale all night and until duk the following day, when it cleared op and became calm and the bright silver moon shone forth in all her splendor, as though nothing unusual bad oocurred. llrick-layors, linnrn and carpen ters, and other mechanic , will be kept quite busy for a week nuking repairs. Following is an epitome of the damage done as far as we have been able to got parti :uUrs : Of the ruideucii damaged Iu town perhaps Ibuso or Pr. Hiirtswiok and the late Pr. Wilson are tbe worst, while the t ips at a dolea or two chimneys were lovelcl t lha roof oa other buildiogs Quite a number of trees Were blown down throughout the borough, mos'. of them being nrcken off, showing the severity and force of the s to tin, The tin sheeting oa the roof of Pie's Opera Houte we ripped badly, about one half of ii be ing turned inside out, which is beiog replaced with a new ro if. Tbe top of a chiiuaoy oa llii C urt llouie, and tha ornaments on the balcony on the south side of the tower were blown off. Tbe fflof of tbe Oar bouso was moved from its place perhaps a foot or eighteen Inches, and tbe wall next to the river fell out, entailing a loss of several hundred dollars. The roof caught fire from one of Ibe Burs, but was soon extinguished. The alarm was given throughout tho town, and orios af the "Leonard II mse is on Are I" wu beatd vo Ibe streets. Tim ercatad tbe wildest eon stern ut loo. and everybody starud fir that pl ica through rain and mud, and they were glai to Bud tbat their trouble was la valu, Ibe 'll'jodfjllow" bridge, two miles tp the river, was completely domollsbcd and thrown into tbe river. Tbe Market street bridge at Ibis plaoe was destroyed, one-half of It falling down In the water, andbalf of tha roof blown off tbe por tion yet remaining oa tbe piers. The portion that fell was overtaken with a similar misfortune ima twenty-fire or thirty years ao. The new bridge at the fuol of deoond street was also affected a little, we understand, but not to d image it any. The "(loodfollow" brl Ige Is a loss to the munly . bat tbe old Market street bridge Is owned by a stock company. The former bridge was carried 600 feet by tbe wti.il and deposited oa the sand bar above tbe old fording. The bridge across the river al Karthaus we darn was destroyed. Clearfield and Centre counties will share the Ion of this struotnre In eosrmoa. Two-lbirusof tbe roof oa ika east side of lha Lecture Itoom in the rear of the Presbyterian Church was torn off and hurled to tbe ground. I Two stables, ooe old and the ctber new, ad joining each other, belonging to Abe Tate, lo West Clearfield, were completely demolished. The mangers bold tbe dtbrit up, which saved the lives of Mr. Tate's horses. When discovered they were Ijlng elaie to tbe mergers unhurt His sow was running at large. Tbe barn of Henry Penis, In Union township, was unroofed. Tbe barn of Andrew Shops, at "T lie Knobbs,"ln Otrard township, was moved from He foundation, and the roof blown off, tome of tbe I lumbers of hleb ware carried fci'C or (100 fret. The barn was one of the finest In tbe county, and Is camper, atlvely a new barn, having been built less tbaa two years aga. We learn tbat Ike kern of Wot. T. MeOorklc, about three miles not k of town, en Wolf ran, la Lawrence township, woe anroofed. One cf the wings of ike bara on (J. L. Heed's farm, adjoining Ibis borougk, was unroofed, and quite n number of trees blown down in that vi cinity. It wee Indeed miraculous that no oae wu In jured la Ike least. Bricks nod terra eotta ware, with boards, etc., were flying for t time as len tllul almost as tha rain drops. This Is believed t be the most severe tterm that has ever visited t hie vleiaity, aael we kopc tbat It will be a long tlnsc befarc another oae eomee along. If in nood of a carpet, call at T. A. On Wednesday evening but, about 7 o'clock, while a traia of sixty-eight or seventy can load ed with coal, with an engine before and one be hind pushing, was going down tbe mountain on toe Tyrone A tlearUoid Jn.r--J, I; front engine jumped the track while rounding the curve at the "Big Fill," and rolled down the mountain quite a distance, followed br thirty or more cart. The engine Is aocmplote wreck, as well as the cars and cost. The engine was In charge of A. J. Latham, engineer, (better known along the road as "Yank,") and John Haiti gan, fireman. Tbe fireman woe carried beneath tbe wreck, and tea ears wltb two hundred tone of coal wore piled upon him. Tho body lay under the wreck all night, and wae not discovered antil near toon on Thursday. Hit injuries were very bad. The body was all mashed, a hole made through tbe breast, and his head crushed. Hit remains were removed to Tyrone. "Yt.ni," tbe engineer, was reports 1 at first to be fatally injured, bat It was erronlius. The Philiptburg Journal la speaking of tho wreck, says: "Engine No. 74 seems to bear an ill fated existence, as some years ago this same number, If not the same engine, exploded at Morrlsdele Mines, then under charge of engineer Duke Cox, but with no loss of life." LETTER FROM HUSTON. Mr. Editor : Well, tbe election Ii over. The pure, grand, noble oititsn and cititeo has been defea'ed ry a man against whom the worst charges bare bean made and proven. The Dem ocrats ft Huston made a gallant fight. A must tremendous pressure was brought to bear upon the volera tiy the leading Republicans of ibe township, and tha Influence of the employers at Tyler's, Winlerburn, and Pentleld, was enough to ebange the voles of some of their men ; but in eplte of the tremendous odds against them, in a total poll of 284 votes, the Democrats were only beaten twenty-eight, hardly an average Republi can majority lo Huston, and bad the men of Merrill' camp been allowed to vole, there would hare been a very thai Republican majority, indeed. Ibe schools of Huston are all in, operation, taught by the following teachers : Pen field High School, Uuorge W Weaver; Uraminar, A. II. Ilosenkraos Prluttrr, Mrs. O. W, Weaver j Hickory, Lou Hels.y i Wmterburn, Wan. Postle thwatt; Mill Hun, bile Roieokrans i Laurel Run, Charles O. Newcomer. The l each ore maintain a first e lass District InMltute, and a No. I Literary Society la doing good work In fenllcld. Ike people ol tbe Milbodiit Church are making a special effort to pay purl of their church debt, as tbe aale of their church Is threatened. Tbe Presbyterian Church here, fortunately, is out of debt. Another Democratic-Republican mtrrlago fu sion took plane in Huston reeen'ly, tbe occasion being tbe wedding of Thomas U. Buoy, a lead ing Democrat, la Mire Augusta Woodward, daughter of William D. Woodward, Sr. If these things don't stop, what will be the politics of tha future generation F Business is good In Huston. The Craig mill at Wiotetburn has nopped but the men bava work in the woods, and wlieo the Blanehard mill stops, tho men will work in tbe planing mill. At Tyler's the saw mills are running, and considerable eual is being dug. At P.nhcld tbe Woodward saw mill la busy. Charles Kobaoker and Hi1e.ni Vtnodward are hauling bark to the rail scad, t , 0, 1! o w man's shingle will on Laurel run te turn ing out the abtagles, and a new stave mill bat bren put la operation on Laurel run.
