J. P. Bi'RcuriELD, Wm, E. Wallaci, Chairman. Secretary. Clearfield, August 18tb, 1880. COMPOVXD LIARS. -The editor of tho Philadelphia Timet remarks : 'Tho newspapers which copied and keep standing at the head of their columns tho lorged extract (rom Wade Hampton's Staunton spocch prefer to continue to utter tho counterfeit, al though Senator Hampton has oxposed tho fraud and put them in possession of tho genuino article 'A lie well stuck to is as good as tho truth' is thoir motto. Wade Hampton now writes another denial, and adds in a despairing tono : 'What good to deny this story to Instantly bo confronted with a mors desperate lubrication f Is my whole record sinco tho close of the war and all my efforts for a better un derstanding between the sections broad and down-reaching for the Union to be fritlorod away by the forgor- ios of an obscuro nowspapor writorT 1 iicilhor nsed the words attributed to mo nor anything approaching them in meaning. I am perplexed and almost discouraged.' Whatgood.indoedl Sen ator Hampton fairly appeals to his rec ord in this matter. 11 o was tho first man of prominence in tho South to call his emancipated negroes together and advise them as to their political re sponsibilities, lto was among the first to accept negro suffrage, and in South Carolina and throughout tho South ho has beca the foremost advocate of a oordial acceptance of all the results of the war and the most scrupulous re gard for civil and political rights of the colored mon. Ho has done more by precept and example toward a res toration of the Union sentiment than all of the LongilrocU and Mosbys, upon whom the bounty of the govern ment has been showered, put together. but it is considered the fair thing in politics to represent him as a still blatant rebel, fighting the war over and planning a new rebellion, and ho will have to get nsed to it" The Canadian courts havo decided that telegraph companies hare no power to destroy or injure shade trees. Tho employos of the .Dominion Tele graph Company have been fined for such offonccs. AXSIVKIl TO MIXERS. Some of tlio votors in tho mijiiiig regions have allowed themselves to bo disturbed on tho tariff question by some ignorant blatherskites, and hav ing addressed the editor of tho Osceola Reveille, ho answers them in ibis way : The following is tho record of James A. (Jurflcld on tho tariff of foreign coal and Iron, as It oppears in tho Congees tional (Hole: FOREIGN COAL. On tho 13th of March, 1871, tho fol lowing joint resolution was passed by the House of liepresentutives: '?. It tnartnt, ere., That from and after the postage of this joint restitution no us or duty shall be levied or eolleetsd on foreign ooal." On the passuge of this resolution Cioneral Garfield voted aye. See. Con gressional Globe, Part I., i'ii Congress, p. 82. During tho debate in tho IIouso on tho abovo bill, March 10, 1871, (ion field said: "But I derire to ask gentlemen whether, eon- eidering the odium that tha whole tariff kaa to bear in eonsiquance of this duty on ooal, they think It wise to perpetuate this tai, wbiok te of eo little value either to toe eountry or the treaa ury. 1 think it unwise to eoolinue this duty on ooal and I am therefore ta oeor of if rensal." Kelloy and allothor mombors in Congress in favor of pro lection voted against Ibis joint resolu. tion repealing tho duty on coal. FOREIGN IRON, &0. During tho first session of tho Thir ty oiglith Congress tho tariff on pig iron was raised from $6 to (!) por ton. On page 3312, Part IV. of tho Con gressional Globe of 1804, Juno 27th, we find James A. Garfield voting to re duce tho proposed tariff on railroad iron I rom eighty down to sixty cents per hundred pounds, and on tho final voto on raising tho tariff his voto is not recorded. On tho reduction of the duty on railroad iron he voted in op position to every protective tariff man in tho House, including such men as Judge Kelley, Thnddctis Stephens and General A. K. Moorhead. in 1870 tho duty of $D per ton on pig Iron was re duced to $7 por ton. General Garfield votod for tho roduction. in 1872 a bill making a reduction of ten per cent, in tho duties on wools, iron and stool passed Congress. This bill provided : 'That on and after the 1st day of August. 1 871. io lien ef tba duties imposed by law on the arli- oioe in tois seotion enumerated, there shall be levied, eolleetsd and paid on the goods and wares and msrebaodire in this section enumerated and provided for imported from foreign eoun trles, ninety per eentum of the several dn tiee and rales of duly now Imposed by law upon said articles severally, it being A jafeaj o la is Melton lo recfur. Mining dvtiet oa soiol article, fen fr rr.rftm o sura ihIim, that IB to say i MORAL COWARDICE. It is assorted, with an air us confi dent as if tho statement were a goo niolrio axiom, that Gen. Garfield bus never lacked tho courago ot bis con victions and that, in voting, ho has always boon true to his conceptions of right. It would not bo a heavy tusk to cite sevorul columns of instances in which General Garfield has put party in front of duty and voted in onposi tion to his declared belief. But a sin gle illustration will suffice fortius time. As a member of the House, he oppos- ed the Electoral Commission bill on the ground thai it guvo tho Commission authority "to go behind tho returns." Tho declaration ot this opinion caused his selection, by a Dcmocralio House, as a member of that Commission. Ho took tho oath to act "impartially," and thon votcJ that the Commission had no power to recoivo ovidenco, making gno of tho eight who overthrew the will of tho pcoplo by setting aside the election ol 1876. As a member of the Commission ho was fuhto to tho con victions uttered in the IIouso, well knowing that, but for the plain decla ration of those convictions, ho would not havo been selected to occupy a seat in that tribunal. These are tho facts facts of record and they are entirely consistent with the whole story cl General Gurfield's publio life, With the air and voico of a lion, be ha the courage of a Bhccp. To what ever altitude his bettor impulses may have soared, ho has novor failed lo sacrifice bis convictions on the altar of party. A BASE FABRICATWX. For tho past two woeks, tho Repub lican pross has been circulating an al leged report of Senator Hampton's speech at Staunton, Va., July 20, In which tho following occurs: "Consider what Lee and Jackson teould do were they alive. These are the same principles for which they fought for four years. Remember the men who voured forth their life, blood on Virginia's soil, ana ao not abandon them now. lie member that unan unur vote tlrnenJa the success of the Democratic ticket." This has been printed in overy Re publican paper, has boon put up in big type at tho head of tli6ir editorial col umns, and has been printed in htigo posters for county circulation.
