MORRIS TOWNSHIP REMARKS.
Kvlrrtowi, August 17th 1 6S0 .
Editor Rkpi-blicaii : It was my pleasure ti
attond a meeting hald at Kyltrtonn on tho oven
ing of tho I Oth lnt. by Superintendent McQuown ,
iu connection with theexauilualion of teachers for
this district, and thinking (hit pot hi pa a few ,
thought! relating thereto might be of pacing in- ,
tarvtt to your numerous readers and especially to i
tbofR immediately concerned t have taken the I
liberty of addrfMtng you.
At this was an K durational ineetlnir. and as the
speakers, of which there were several appeared In
tho role of public educ itors. I tako it tor granted
tn at ineir sayings ami doings were fair subjects
fur comment and open to criticism.
I am aware tbt it is generally supposed to bo
the duty of a correspondent in noticing a meet
ing of this kind to eulogize the participators in
ditcriminately , hut whether this ia the better way
or ii oi aumiis oi a aouot to ray tho least of it.
The meeting was organised in the usual man
ner, alter which tho spcakcrt proceeded. The
rpeaktng being Interspersed with very fair uiunic
on the organ and singing. Most of the speakers
according to therown cotifcicion were unprepared
to address the audience. They profess to have
greatly at heart the educational interests of tho
community, and yet, when a meeting ia called for
tbo avowed purpote of furthering the interests,
and they are advertised some two wocks previous
to)take a prominent part in said meeting they oome
unprepared. Why Is this thus t One speaker
stated that he didn't know until a couple daya
prior to the meeting that he was to speak. Ho
should tako the lUruiLU'A. A good lick. Kr.
Rbf. As a matter of course, some good ikintr
were said for which they deserve and will receive
duo credit. Hut on the other hand some untena
ble grounds was taken and ponltiun i assumed,
the establishment of which would, in tho bumble
opinion of the writer be a dittioult Usk. The
keynote of most of tho speeches was the necessity
of higher wages for teachers. One speaker rather
regreiiea me action oi toe sciiool Hoard in ad
vancing the wages of our teachers, because, aa
he expressed It, "It took the wind out of bis
speech, aa he had Intended saying considerable
on that subject," and yet he dwelt at length on
tho lack of thoroughness inteacheraand lamented
tho absence of that training and fitneos of which
cornea only by bard atudy, long practice and ex
perience. And in those latter remarks ho was
right but nut cormUtont with bis previous and
subsequent declaration!. J would like to inquire
if the gentleman thibka that an increase of wages
would immediately cure Ihe ineflicienoy of which
he oouiplains. If be were to hire a man to work
lor him at twenty dollar! per month, aud became
awaro that ho could not, or would not earn that
sum, would ho hasten to raise bis wage! to forty
dollars 7 I think not. Apprentices do not as a
rule receive the lame ouurpentation aa skilled
workmen. If I were to aimiv for a situation ia
a bakery, and on being interrogated aa to my ex
perience In the business, should reply that in my
youth 1 had built aand-ovoni aod baked mud
pica in the sun, I fear that I could not command
a very high aalary at first. Or if I ahould leek
aa honorable and lucrative position in tbo regu
lar army, and en being anked tn regard to my
cxpeneueo on tho sanguinary field, should slate
that my nearest approach tot, waa once fighting
a boy noarly aa large aa myself, 1 am led to be
lieve that the honors emolument and cpauletts of
a Mvjor General would Vit be Immediately forth
coming. Do you say that my contract! are rather
strong t Not so. There U little, if any more
difference or contrast in tbefigures I have drawn
than there is between a well trained thoroughly
disciplined, nicely balanced teacher, nnd aoiue of
tho so-called who aro yearly given in charge of
schools, and from the tenor of the gentleman's
remarks, 1 boliutfe he would agree with me in
inn view.
Hut, lust here 1 would tike tn call hi attention
to another rather umrarded statement. He ra-
markod, "tint although we naid our Count v.
State and Poo taxes, without a murmur i yet,
when It came to paying School tax there was
grumbling nnd general dissatisfaction." Now I
am well oonvfnoed that the gentleman would not,
for any consideration, deliberately make n false
statement and so 1 characterise it as an nngoard-
en ana pcrnnrs inoiignuesa expression of a senti
ment, which though having little or no founda
tion in fact Is nevertheless popular wllh a certain
Class.
Ihe citizens of this townshin aro aa a rule in
telligent and fully sensible of the great benefits
derived from the common school, when nronerlv
conducted, and nearly appreciate the advantage
having the risinglgeneration thoroughly educated
and hence pay their School tax aa willingly as
any othor. But they do aometimea complain of
the way their money is miiannlled by Directors
hiring incompetent teachers. It i a foot patent
to every unprejudiced mind that many are em
ployed who should go to school Instead of teach
ing, although I believe that generally speaking,
Directors do pretty nearly at well as they can,
considering the prenure that la brought to bear
upon them.
Men in and out of ofneial position seek to ad
vance tho interests of "lheirfriend' their daugh
ters, ihelr sinters, their eouiins and tbclr aunts"
and the queitlon in many cases la no, are they
ooajpeUiit, but can they secure schools. ''Some of
ibe speakers also reverted to the fact that other
lucrative profossiona were being filled from the
ranks of school teachers and irava a reason for
this, the low wagea paid. 1 will venture to affirm
lhat In nine out of every ten euoh eases, tho
original Intention was not te teach permanently,
but the Individual haa made a stepping stone, or
ladder, so to apeak of the puhho schools, by
which ho might climb to some higher position,
and while ostensibly training thuie under his
care baa trained himself with an eye to the very
place bo now occupies.
una speaicr aoemcd to favor tn an Indirect way
the doctrine of tbo anion of Church and State,
and declared with considerable empheate, "that if
he were a Director be would not vote to employ
any teacher who waa not a Christian." As
superintendent Mcyuown spoke previous to Iho
gentleman alluded to ho probably forgot to give
hia views on this subject, and whether he would
favor the Incopnration Into the school system of a
religions branch, or whether bo would feel com
petent t examine and give teachers their proper
numlier or grade in rollgloue experience aro
question! upon which I hare have nt yet been
advised. Of coarse, over right minded per an n
would be glad to sea all our teachers as well as
all others enjoy religion j but whether tba practi
cal workings of such a law or rule made by
School Directors would bo beneficial to either the
school system or Iho eanso nf Christianity li a
question upon which 1 con feat I have grave
doubts. I admire the gentleman's xoal and give
him the eredit of being at least. In this respect a
good deal tn advance of public eeutitnent in this
country. Of course this will not hurt him if be
Is right. Still I would respectfully luggest that
he make hat to slowly. He will at least grow
older if be live and may yet loam that a Pro
feitlona) Cert i lies te and tho mature ago of twenty-three
doea not Invaribly exempt n man from
those little mislakea and blunder! aud other
grlevaneea Incident to live In tins oold world.
And now, I trail that nothing I have said will
bo construed Into an Intention to aay aught
against, or In any way discuorge those who are
solving to fit themsolves for the honorable and
responsible position of teachers. I would gladly
assist yon If I could i but It depends upon your
own exertions whether yen snceesdor not. "Thore
ia no royal road to learning." but energy determi
nation and pluck, with tbo blueing of God la
what wine at last.
"Learn to labor and to wait," He not so much
concerned Just now as to what remuneration you
will receive In dollar a ad cents, as you aro to se
euro youreolf that culture and training that will
compel recognition. There Is not, 1 venturo to
lay, a first class teacher In the country to-day ,
wbo has not more oQered more than be or she oan
accept. Do not bo afraid the profession will
bo overcrowded, "there lialwayaroom up stairs."
Karntatly disclaiming tba leant lb tea lion to
giro elleaee to any one in anything I hare aaid,
and with none bat the kindliest feelings toward
lbs gentleman whose speeches I have thus Im
perfectly noticed, 1 remain with great respect,
