Of victory It tells
Of victory It telle, my boys,

The Hancock fires are burning bright.
On all the hills they blew,
Too bright and high for such a fragd . i
As stole the srat for II eyes
As Hole the seat for Ilayaj, my buys
And never shall we sea
Haeh fraud as four short years ago
losnlted Liberty.
The Hancock bacoar proudly waves,
And greets the morning litcht,
And round it rally those as friends
Who once were foes in fight, my buyij
But in a belter day, my boys,
Around the Hancock tamer throng
Alike the blue and gray.
The llaucoek men are staunch and brave,
No truer anywhere,
And they ean boast a candidate '
Whose name Is clear and fair
Whose nam Is clear and fair, say hoys,
And onward l his course ;
For now the people mean to rule

THE LATE WILLIAM BIGLER.
We clip the fallowing from tbat itaudard
journal, the Albany (N. Y.) Anjui ;
"By th death of Kx -Governor William Bigler,
Pennsylvania loses a tntevmau of th first rank,
and a patriot and a Deiuoci.-U of deep devotion
to sound principles, lie wa? born in Shermans
burg, Cumberland count v, P in December,
lsl.i. Ibe variety, Importance and continuity of
his public service bave produced the general im
pression tbat he had passed boyund his sixty,
seventh yeart but the mistake was du to tb
fact tbat he was early engaged in affairs, and did
not leave them suon. A I lor asMid common school
education, Mr. Jligler entered a printing office
wherein his duties incited him to reflection and
reading, andgave bun a practical knowledge of
public toen and public questions. He not only 1
rose to the first proficiency in his art, but bo bo
came the fuuiiler and wise conductor of a ster
ling publiq journal, the Vlearjitd JJtmocrmt,
almost as suoii as he became ut age. This
worthy weekly, which is now ao honored part of
the prsss ef the oountry, Mr. Biglar disposed of
in Itt-ll, as his fellow. citucns trrre plainly de
manding bis services. Id that year he was elected 1
to the Senate of the dial, In which he sat son- '
tinoously until lti7, part of th time being 1
Hpeaker of tho body. In lttol he was elected i
Governor of Pennsylvania for the term of four j
years, and at the close of tbat period he was
chose Senator of the United States, for Ibe term '
expiring March 4, 1HA1. In lb Neneta ho served
oa the Committees on Commeroe, postal affairs
and engrossed bills, and be rose to a high rank as
a debater and statesman. He was succeeded In ,
1 SSI by Edgar A. Cowan, who entered Congress I
a Republican, but who became a Democrat oa
account of the tact that tbo latter party hold in ;
reality tb constitutional principles the Rcpub- j
I leans espoused only to discard. Mr. Bigler was
a delegate to tb Democratic National Conven
tion in Chicago, lo lHfli, and to the Philadelphia
Union Convention, In WA, and to the National
Democrat io Convention In New York, In Infill.
In all of these great bodies be took commanding
part. In IH74 his in flue nee led to bis selection
as th fiscal agent of the Centennial Hxhlbition,
and .though scores of millions of dollars passed
through bis hands, every dollar was spent with
the utmost wisdom. Mr. Bigler, in later years,
remained in well earned retirement, one of th
most honored eitisensof his great Stat. His un
derstanding was profound; bis acquirements
were great j hlsoloquenoe was of robust but always
refinod type j bis opposition to sectionalism and
corruption was intrepid and lasting ; bis lor of
his country and Its principles was greater than
his love of life ; his tastes were elevated and en
nobling. He had the respect and afloction of h is
fellow men in rare measures. There is bo other
Pennsylvania of whom it eoald be said so well
as it could be said of this man : His action not
only desired and sought the right In politics, but
it also expressed It. The people, when they
agreed with bim, wer right in motlv and wis
in action, and when they did not, their oonrso
was proved by events to bav itself been a griev
ous mistake. The verdict history Is likely to
award bim is tbat this Common wt alt erred la
judgment) whenever it did not account his views
and public oouduot to bo a standard for its own.
Had bo lived, few statesmen would bare exer
cised an Inrlueoo so great on the country, In and
after lb change of parties the oountry intends
to effect."
