TETTER FROM MORRIS TOWN
SHIP.
Kvlrrtowii, May 2D(h, 1880.
Mr. Editor : I like to read lb Utters of yoar
correspondents from different parts of tb county j
ana noit id commendable teal with which they
biing out to the best advantag,th prosperity
and progrtsslreneia of their several localities. I
nave nen grieved mat tbe oitiien of this section
have len ao busy getting rich tnat no one baa
aa yet nen louna naving tb tim or disposition
to give your numerous reader an Idea of onr
wonderful progress in tb last fw yra, or to
writ up this, what must certainly be regarded,
the garden r-pot nf th world.
1 aa aware that some folk in other parts of
me oouoiry roini can inn putting it rattier
strong ; but If I bey are Incredulous, all Ihey have
w uo is io come ana see tor in em selves.
I now propose to five vou a few hints In re
gard to what we have been doing as oor share
toward bringing the county out of the words,
aoa ii i ao not ao tbe auoject justioo a oonti
gency quite likely to arise) allowance must be
matte Tor the fact that In speaking or local mat
tars one is apt to be bashful.
There are so many points of Interest in this
township, that it Is a difficult matter to select on
to begin with; but aa Kylertown it the chief
place the metropolis, o to speak of tbe town
ship, I will begin right her.
EJitora, I believe, generally travel to some x
tnl, and theugh the question may seem entirely
superfluous, I wtnt to ask if you bar ever been
to Kylertown ?
Vou may hav traveled to distant lands, and
beheld tbe wonders or Nature and Art oombinvd
IB foreign coon tries ; toq may vn have been
with Grant around the world ; but if you have
never iron the beautiful street! of tbia emhrvo
city, your life lias hitherto been spent in vain.
u'n want nas not visited us yet, nut w ex
pect bim some time this Summer or Fall. He
says bo wants to see some of th fellowi about
hero on a little business. Some malicious per
sons hare circulated the report that ha wanta to
be President again ; but I I earn from a private
source, that ho wants to buy some bemlork timber
land (of wbiuh there is plenty), lh thistownship,
as lumber It going up and you know, when
there Is anything good going, he always says
"Let us hav a piece." At any rat w eipect to
bur a big tim whin becomes. Other prominent
place hav been deceiving btm with great en
thusiasm, and we wil not be behind. I wish yoa
could be hero to help as.
Hut excus m I have strayed a littl from tb
sotyed to band, and wilt now return.
When Christopher Columbus first discovered
Kylertown, it U said tbe plao coatained but two
or three dwelling nouses and only on lavarn.
I know tbia may seem almost Incredible. But
I hav carefully 5 gored It all up, aad find that
tt the rat it hat bean Improving for tbe laat few
years.it would Just about roach Its present di
mensions at thia tim.
Ia fact, when w tak Into consideration lis
natural advantage!, Its prailmlty to two teal
banks, (Mons' and Kepplea',) Its nearnei to
Swampoodla Saw mill, tb nrgy and Inde
fatigable Industry of her tltltens, aod th addi
tional fact that our basinets man do all their ad
vertising in tb Clearfield RsrrRLiLA,ils marvel
ous growth is not ao much a matter of tvrpritt.
Then, too, its central position mmt be taken into
account. There is scarcely a railroad project of
any magnitude In the country, but what it located
right through tbe place. Of course, thei roada
are not built yet ; but their construction is only
a question of time.
ttomehody haa said that tt I the country that
makes tb town, and nowhere la tbt truth of tbia
more eloarly brought ent than here, surrounded
as It by the moit fertile district yet discovered.
As a noubl exempt, I might mention tb Potter
farm, on the southeast, who broad acres, cov
ered In Summer with th blooming whit delay,
presents a striking as well as pleasing contrast
to th dark Stone fronts and dingy walls of th
town itself.
Our educational Interest! have hitherto been
considered In a healthy condition, and w hav
congratulated ourselves over th fact, that whllt
other large town hav been com pel led to sop
port two or thro school, and in some cases ereo
mora, n school, a term of of Ave months In the
year, baa furnished ample facilities for teaching
our children all they did not already know.
But alas! for onr dream of quietness aod
peace. Rettlest spirits, K seams, art found every
where, aad disturbers ef tranquility of oommuQl
ttei have abounded aloe th world began.
Scarcely had our school olosad tbia last Spring,
whan a movement wa Inaugurated, looking to
th establishment of a High Hohool or College in
our midst Some of na opposed tb movement at
first ; because w bated to bav published to th
world this tacit acknowledgement of ignorano.
But aa it become more and more apparent that
w could not atem the tide, we yielded as grace
fully a w eoald to tb inevitable, and now eon
al ourselv with th thought that, perhaps,
alter all It may not hart us much. The faculty
ia an able one, composed of gentleman whose
ability and fitness for tbe position are not doubted,
and whose eharactars are like Ctriar'i wife
above suspicion.
The atudeata are studiouj, orderly and quiet,
aud they lay a number are making admirable
progress in some of th higher branches, especial y
"Croquet," and lb writer can attest, from per
sonal observation, the llreloes seal witb which
some at least pursue this somewhat intricate
sciene. So far as is known, no aggravate! ease
of "bating," hat occurred in the school, and bo
d label tea I outrage, In Cadet Whittakar,
have aa yet been reported, and io, judging tbe
future from tb pail, all may yet be well.
Our town ia also a vary fashionabl plao. Otir
tad iei espaolally dress with equlsil test aod
tbeir atyl oaunot he surpassed, and oor girls, or
more properly speaking young tadiea, er course,
follow tult and I want to say Just bvre, kind of
eonndnattally, that our girls, or tome of them,
wear their hair th funniest you ver seen. They
omb It forward and cut ft off Just abov tb
ye and tbaa lot it be straight around or twtrt It
up into all aorta of eurllmaeuea and frit see and
other thing Ao., Ac, just a it suite th taste of
th wearer. I asked a lady the other day wbo
knows most everything (she doti't wear hers that
way) wby tbe girls did ao, and abe aaid tt waa to
make them look Intelligent. I never thought of
that before, bat come to think of it I shouldn't
wonder if there waa something la It. Why," the
says yoB take a very ordinary or ovaa dull look
ing girl, fix ap br hair In that atyl and yon
bav ao idea what aa improvement it makes in
ber appraaoe." I have taken a little notice
since and I guns tb lady waa about right
(and It aeema strange I never heard it before,) 1
used te wear my hair that way occasionally when
a little ebap, and la fact am not sure but that I
wore it both ways at one tons times ; but ean t
recollect of bearing any ent lay that I looked in
telligent, titbar before or after. But then, mine
might have bea an exceptional cas. 1 on know
there are eases Sometime wbinh no treatment will
reach, and, therefor, I Would Bat condemn tbe
plan, bal cordially recommend It to all ah" feel
tbat tbey need aometblng la that direction.
Rut pardon me, I bavt agla digretatd, and
will endeavor to get back lo Ibe subject that I
started out to treat.
Our town baa always been ntted for lea hospi
tality to strangers. When Columbus was her,
he said h never met a mor elevr set or people,
li waa a Jelly, old ebap, and wbn be and John B.,
and a fw mot of tb old re eld enters, got to
