to Inform him of the result of their in

Mr. SchoGold tho day before, and at

White said they had been treated in
decently, unfairly, dishonestly, untruth
fully, unofficially, discortoously, tri

at tho emphatic language of White,
remarked that tho administration bad
dono well by Pennsylvania, whereupon
Mr. Thompson, impatiently waiting
for an opportunity, said, "What in tho
h 1 have you done for us ?" The Sec
retary, looking astounded, mentioned
tho names of Welsh and Taylor. Mr.
Thompson said that ho wonld liko to
know who, in Pennsylvania, was re

Sherman asked, "Aro they not good
men?" Mr. Thompson repliod, "Ccr
tainly, there is no question about that ;
but we think yon will pay the penalty

White then said again, "I want an an

Schofield would accept." "Vos, sir,
you did," said General Whito, "tha ap

first called upon you." Mr. Thompson
hero spoko again and said : "It looks
much as if this were nothing but a ly
ing, hypocritical and trifling adminis

two Representatives turned upon thoir
heels and left the Secretary to digest
their remarks.
"A Pair or Jacks." Two Pennsyl
vania Congressmen exhibited them
selves in their true characlor io the
Cumtal lust week. The editor of
tbo Philadelphia Times in alluding
to their rfflirf says : "Thompson and

didn't find it until they holed it in

out their grievance and tboir emphatic
resentment of the treatment they had
received from the President and Sec

ing time bad jogged around and sober
od thoir throbbing hearts and tbey
read their own speeches in the news
papers, they concluded tbat some peo
plo bad played the fool, and they
weren't quite sura that it wasn't them

modating Associated Press waa called
into requisition as it often is to heal
the self-inflicted wounds ol thought

all and singular the cuss words repor

of the story was sent out to vibrate
over the continent ; but tho average
correspondent isn't an oyster to be
shut up in tbat way, and he reiterates
the story just as if lbs truth was to be
told on all occasions regardless of the
changeable fancies and variable Inter

Too Thin. An associate press tele
gram from Washington on the 30th
says: A caucus of tho Republican
members ot the Senate was held this
afternoon in response to a suggestion
that measures should be concerted for
a closer working of the Republicans as
a party and body in dealing with mat
ters coming before them in the busi
ness of the Senate. During the meet
ing a good deal of discussion arose con
cerning tho recent speech of Senator
IIowo and the questionable policy of
division being created further in the
Republican party by such expressions
as were mad" by Senator Howe. A por
tion of tho debate bad reference to the
great necessity of preventing any spe
cial gratification being afforded to the
Democratic party by the evidence that
there was cither present or growing
dissension in tbo councils ol the Repub
licans. It is denied that any effort
was made oithor to whip the Hayes
Senators into line, or, on the part of
tho latter, tbat any plea was made in
bohalf of tho desired co-operation of the
anti-Hayes Senators with tbo policy of
tho President. Senator Conkling did
not attend the caucus, though he was
in the city.
i'ENNSYLVANiA aoain. The ap
pointment of our ex-Congressman,
Glonni V. Scofield, of Warren, Regis
ter of tho Treasury to fill the vacancy
causod by the death of John Allison,
has stirred up quite a breexe among po
liticians. Glenni was one of Oakee
Ames Credit Moblier men, and whon
interrogated about the matter while
making a speech in Mercer connty in
1872, told the crowd that be was not
Frenchman enough to know what the
woids meant and was therefore an in.

tive of the Collax-Boecher class ot pub
lio men, who have so nearly ruined tb
morals and business interest of the
country, and why Hayes should resur
rect any of that class ia beyond oar
comprehension.

entitled to his seat. Underordinary cir
cumstances the displacement of a repub
lican by a Democrat in Congress would
be viewed with satisfaction, but in this
case there is something to regret At
the last election In the Third district of
Massachusetts Mr. Dean,
Mr limn Demncnit
IfW- returned electod bylhe original
count of the election officers, bat Field,
the Republican candidate, claimed that
clerical errors bad been committed
which, if corroctod, would give him
the seat. The charges having been
put in proper legal forth, a recount was
liad, verifying Mr. Field's statement
and returning him electod by a majo
rity of fire. These are the simple facts
in the case. Neither Mr. Field nor Mr.
Dean have charged any fraud in the
votes themselves and the whole ques
tion turned upon the point whotner
the original or revised finding of the
judges should be recognised. Techni
cally perhaps the former had the strong
est arguments In its favor, but tho
equity was entirely on the sido of the
latter. Mr. Fiold received the most
votes and his title to his seat ahould
baro been rocognized. As it was, par
tisanship prevailed over higher Inter
cuts, and although nine Democrats, In
cluding, we are happy to say, two
Maryland Representatives, voted in
favor of the Republican contestant,
Dean was scaled by a majority of ono.
Wo do not question tho motive ol any
member's voto in this case, but the
Democratic party cannot afford to fol
low such a precedent as the Republi
cans set In the Senate when tbey voted
in Kellogg in defiance of all justice and
decency. It bad much better content
itself with limited power than run the
risk of losing publio confidence.
The Fire Fiend. About 10 o'clock
on Monday night of the 25th ult.,a fire
broke out in the wholesale Drug store
of Messrs. II. K. Wampole & Co., in
the Cth ward, Philadelphia. This
ward is bounded by Chestnut street on
the South, Soventh street on the West,
Vine street on the North and the Del
aware river on tho East. Tbo Mer
chants Hotel ia located about in the
contre of the ward. The flro broke
out on the corner of 4th and Cherry
streets and destroyed all the buildings
on the East side of 4th street from 109
North to 123, burning about forty
stores and dwellings worth 12,000,000
and turning out of employment 1,300
men and women, A strong wind was
blowing from tha West when the fire
broke out causing fires to break out on
Second and Front streets by burning
shingles and boards lodging on the
roofs. The residents on Cheny street,
which is a narrow street running West
from Third street, to the Schuylkill
river, between Arch and Vine streets,
were the woist sufferers. That a Chi
cago disaslor was averted, all agree,
because of the vigilance of the firemen.
Hanuinos. The Harrisburg Inde
pendent says : According to the report
of (be State Board of Public Charities,
two hundred ana) thirty-four persons
were hangod in Pennsylvania from
1778 to 1878 inclusive. This number
does not include the three executed at
Bloomsburg on Monday. The chances
are that at the end of a hundred years
from 1778 the end of the present
year-toe number will approximate two
hundred and fifty. Among those bang
ed in the post were five for treason,
eight for robbery, sixteen for burglary,
three tor counterfeiting and one lor
arson. If men were hanged for these
crimes nowadays the Sheriffs would be
kopt busy at the work of execution
and the cultivation of bemp would be
a paying business.
A IUee Joke One Dullard, a Bad-
dical membor of the Legislature from
Delaware county, for some local crook
edness was locked np in prison, and
when the Legislature met in January,
the philanthropic members of that body
charged that their brother Legislator
was restrained ol hi Constitutional
privilege and hi personal liberty, and
straightway sent an officer to the Del
aware connty prison and demanded
the release of the said Bullard and con
voyed him to bis seat in the Mall of
the House ot Representatives, at llar
risburg, and gave him 1000.00 in cash
and after receiving it be run off. Last
week bis associates became bold enough

State Revenue. When an effort
was made in the Legislature to put a
tax npon the oil product of tbo State,
a wonderful bub bub was raised about
it in the oil regions. But it is all right
to Impose a Slate tax of three cents
per ton on bituminous coal. If It is
right to tax coal, why not equally so
to tax oil ? If tbe one must help to
support the State, why not the other?
Let some oil king explain this riddlo.

Still Unsettled. A whole lot of

in Congress are laboring duy and night

that tho army is one of the biggest

the great expense. The Philadelphia

mutual Thompson-Whito Sullivan set
up, was so badly upset by the new
Cameron-Sherman alliance, that tho
heads ot the trio wore made to reel and
wo snspect that if thoy don't "look a
liltlo out" tho whole three will lose
their places in the i.esr future unhvs
they go down on their marrow bonus
before "Don" and ask his pardon for
thoir rashness.
A Ri'DE Fellow. An Illinois wo
man has written to one of tbe assistant
Postmaster Generals to pick her ont a
good young man tor a husband. He
at once repliod that it waa not his
business to sort the mails, and she
wasn't an Ohio woman, anyhow.
No FoEOivENEsg. Such know-noth
ing leaders aa Blaine and IIowo will
never forgive JJaycs for putting a
Prussian, Hchura, in his Cabinet. Tbat
will slick in theii craws wbile Hayes
allowed to draw bis 150,000 an
nually.
He has his Kewaed. The late Ben
Wado is credited for originating tbe
term "Copperhead," need so glibly dur
ing war times, and still by a few of the
"loyal millions" who never crossed the
Potomac, either in time of war or
peace.
Roaring Aoain. The British lion
seems to be again throwing out insin
nations that somebody has stepped on
bis tail. He'a looking for tho fellow
ho did it. A single roar the otber
day, put wheat np four cents In Chice
A Baby ArAi. Tho correspond
ence between Congressman Thompson,
of Butler Pa , and Secretary Sherman.
The lettera are a disgrace to tboir
friends and constituents, If not to tbe
writers.
