jecting on some of lha oiflire of Curwenavilla,
in reU-renca to the manner In which the black
bass were disposed of a few yean ago, tha Journal
staling tbat tbey were gobbM up and put into a
prlvete pond in this vioinity Instead of the river.
This Is untrue. All the bass tbat were put into
the pond were snt here for that purpoee by pre
vious arrangrment with tho having control of
stocking the water.. At the saw time the pond
was storked with buss tbe river dim was stocked
also. There arc a great uunjbsr of bass in Ander
son's creek, which have been let out of tbe
pond, It being necessary, as It was believed they
were destroying the young bail.

The Sheriff 'a pnssa, wblob wm sent down tha
river to destroy fish dam on Friday last, report
thai they destroyed eleven betwAo Clearfield and
Deer Creek bridge, at tha following point i No

No. 4 at Mum Island, No. 6 at Millstone ripple,
No. 6 a thi rt distance below Surveyor Kan, No.

on the ripple at the bead of fallows Harbor, No.
9 on Hutment ripple, No. 10 at Sammy's Harbor,
No. 1 1 a short distance above Deer Creek bridge.
Three of the above bad basket in ready to catch
fih, another was built so as to take out and put
in th basket at pleasure, four, vitt Tba onee
near Bald Hills, Onflows Harbor, Hutment ripple,
and Deer Creek, were ao built tbat not a fish cou Id

TEMPERANCE CONVENTION.
At a' uncting of tha National Christian Tem
perance Union, held In Clear So Id, on Monday,
September 24 lb, the uaderslgjjoi were appointed
a committee to call a County Con vest ion, as pro
vided in Article SI of the Constitution t said
fniun, for the purpose of effecting a permanent
nrganitation for Clearfield county.
In pursuance of tho duti imposed upon said

The Constitution provides that the County Con-vi-ntln

aro urgid to send delegate, and where no unions
are organised, the friends of Temperance are rc
quoted to appoint certain .person to represent

It was introduced Into this ceunty several years

most productive red varieties. Wherever the
Clawson has been raised In this Htate, it has sus
ceeded remarkably well. It i a white wheat,
with red eh IT, and fully tqual to the best varie
ties of California growth. It proves early, hardy,
bas stiff straw, and yields large crops on every
variety of wheat coil, fifty-two bushels per acre
having bean gathered. This variety of wheat
originated a follow t "In 1R07, Uarrett Claw
son, In passing over a wheat stubble on his farm,
in the town of Hector, Schuyler county, N. Y., ob
served Sum beads of uncommonly fins appear
ance, ninr tho roots of a stump. The wheat that
had been harvested wa mixed, and included
nearly all tba then common tarietie of winter
wheal raised thereabouts. Mr. Clawsoa selected
the finest samples of the newly discovered beads,
and sowed the grain, and the next year found that
ho had two distinct varieties. Selecting the mort
promising of tb two, he sowed it tbo next year,
and continued lU cultivation. Thua originated
