been giving tht matter of the mineral defaults

Friday evening, Juno Silth, our neighbors had
their borough placed In jeopardy again by a dis
astrous Art, which broke out in tbe oil-room of
F legal ' hardware store. From this point the
Art spread northward along the turnpi k o leading
to Bellefontt, and southward toward tht passen
ger depot, consuming everything for about two
and a half iquarcs. But fur tbo destruction of
Taylor's hotel and MoCausland's building in My
lat, tho fire would have taken a wesleru direction
along Front street, and where It would have
ended, but fur this gup, no one ean tell.
Tha Philipaburg Journal gives the following
details of tbe properties destroyed t The flames
swept up PrcsquoUtc street from Flcgal's hard-
wart store, taking In rapid succession Hoop,
Humes A Co.'s store, Wesley Hunk's store, and
Hoop, Humes A Co.'s office, Haugbawont's and
Flegal's resldenoe, Miss Flogal's millinery store,
Mrs. Ickos' candy store, Faulkner's office, Mos-
tln-sbop, Uray's brick building, and the
Mosbannoa House. Down Reoond street, It took
Matthew Johnson's furniture start aud dwelling,
Wm. Harper's residence, and tbt residence of
Kobt. Taylor, besides stables which were on these
properties. It is Impossible to say whert tbt Art
would bava extended bad there been houses on
tbt Diamond, but as there were Don on it tbt
Art reaohlng the Mosbannon House it bad to abate
Its fury on vacancy and Anally died down into
ashes and smoke. Hard fights wert made' at
Ktssltr's building and Ibe buildings of A. J.
Dress and E. C, Bender, PreiqueUle street, and
only by tha fire being within a brick wall, was
tbt latter building tared. Only by determined
labor and fearless daring wort tht buildings on

an insurance thereon of probably $10,000. The

prospect for the better. There art no less than
five bouses In this small borough nnoeouplcd, and
some of them tbe beat In town.
Our Street Commlssiootr bas his dnnlleat
worked out, and now ther talk of laving another
Street tax. Our now board-walks art nearly
completed, which add greatly to tbo convenience
of pedestrians when tht streets are muddy.
On Saturday last, wt wert visited by an unusu
al heavy storm of rain and thunder. The light
ning struuk two treet close to town, and also the
baru of Houry Pierce, in tblt borough, which tt
tore badly, but no person waa Injured.
The new tri-weekly mall rout, from Ntw Wash
ington to CurwensvlIIt, went Into practical opera
tion on Haturday last, tbo lat Inst. Tbo uiall
carrier, Mr. A. h. Hurd, made tha fist trip on
early time, through heavy rain and thunder. He
runt a two-horse spring wagon, and will jarry
passengeri and freight. This will bt a great ad
vantage to all from one end of tbt rout to tho
other, and I hop that th new enterprise may bt
to Mr. Hurd a source of profit.

On Monday evening, July 3d, a large number

Character of Washington," by Ker. Wm. II.
Dill, of Clearfield. Tbe lecture was fall of plain

triot merit. It was eminently fitting for tho oeca

had tho lecture elcsed, when the steam-whistle
announced that midnight bad arrived, bringing

barn on Thursday last. A very pleasant hop
with " the light fantastic tee " was indulged tn
during tbe evening. Mr. Porter, although not a

to contest for prises in rending, declaiming and
