highway robbery ever committed la this county
was perpetrated oa tbo person of J. A, Kulng, a
peddler, belonging ta Tyrone, a 11 Thursday
arteroooa, oa tbe turn-pike, about three ml lee
east of this place. Two desperadoes stepped hie
team and made him get out of (he wagon, and
while one of them took cara of tho team aad
pointed a cocked gun at the peddler's bead, the
other with revolver la band threatened death and
damnation and searched Kiting' pockets, taking
therefrom ft0 and a silver waieb, after which be
as ordered to get oa his wagon and clear out.
Tbe robber took to tba woods. The peddler
hastened to town and made Information before
Krqulrc Porter, who Utucd a warrant to Cue ta
ble McClclUa, for tha apprehension of tbe Mono
drcls, but up to tbe present time no one has beta
arrested. The next day two suspicious character,
with gnnt oa (heir sboulderr, ealled at Mr. Morris
Wallace, a few miles north of this borough, and
purchased some provisions, ttatlng-that they were
going to Musquito crock to fish and bant. Par.

went nader the bridge and took up the ma for
some distance, and oa coming In sight of Mr.
Rhaw's saw mill, Ihey took to the woods, evidently

Ihem, given by the peddler and the part le 'who

that tha two men who called at Mr. Wallace's
plant, are tbe part las who perpclralrd the robbery
and In all probability will succeed In making their
ewape. A remarkable fact about this robbery I),

Heverly at one time run an engine oa the Tyrone
and Clcrrfleld branch, and was known by many
In this station t "At about S o'clock on Tuesday
afternoon, tbe 2d Inst , Mr., Charles Heverly ,wbo
waa employed as ear Inspector foi the Powellon
Coal Company, la tha railroad yard at this place,
was Instantly killed. It appear that Mr. Hev
erly waa standing oa one of the tracks In tbo
yard, looking at a train of oar backing np an
other track, and after a portion of tbe train he
was watching had passed, aa engine with two
oars attached to It, backed up In tbe same direc
tion and on the track on whlek Mr. H. was stand
ing. The noise of the short train being drowand
by that of tbe hmg one, Mr III did not notice It
until within a foot or two of him, and too lata to
ae himself. The car struck him, knocking htm
to tha track, where the wheel pasted over him,
terribly orsuhing his legs and body and killing
him Instantly. A bog ear on thd rbort train pre .
vented Mr. James Carney, the engineer, from see
ing Mr. Heverly, or be would have been able to
stop the train and saved tie unfortunate aen'i

and branches, beginning May 1, and continuing

wind blowing at a hurricane rate at tbe time, that

supposed to be n Oerman, while walking on the
track of tha Pennsylvania Central, almut. two

not fix the precise dale when the first class was

There was then an organised class of a few mem
bers. Orris Hoyt waa tbe leader. Rev. Jobn
Thomas was the preacher in charge. Tbe class
confined of only a few members, and met at a
wall house ou llie river a little below the present
town. It must have been organiied some four or
five year previous to this date. At that time
there were only five or six bouses la the lewa.
Jobn Moore, ft faithful and salou member of tbe
church, came a few years after this date and at
onoe identified himself wllb tbe interests of Ibe
church. He remained In aclivtcommunioa until
death signed bi releeee a few years agd, and be
pasted over tbe flood in hope of a blissful iotmer-
