A JOKEON TH H .Senator. The re
porter of th Altoona Mirror evidently bad "the
Senator from Union" In bis eye, when he gave the
following, in his report of the exercises of the
Juniata Valtoy camp meeting, on the 1st:
Rev. A. II. Dill delivered a acrmon yeiterdny

the text ; "Paul, culled to be en apostle of Janus
Chrlat, through tha will of Mud, and Ho.tbencs
our brother." The sermon was considered a mas
terly effort by all who heard it.
We presume the reporter intended to say Rev.

. LETTER FROM MR. BETTS. f
CLBAnriKlf), Pi., Sept. 1, 1875.
To mg Fritndt t ,
In answer lu a bomber of letters regarding the
an noun cine of mi name a a candidate for Hen-
ator, I have to say, that at tbe solicitation of
many friends I hare gtvctiUie,auljcotoe,rulia
sideration, resulting ia the kcltuf tlWt-U .svnjwife
to do so at this lime. There are other candidates
in Ihe field, who claim Ike nomination by the
right of priority; and In consideration of past
service to the party, claim its endorsement, and
bad 1 entered the contest much bit tern m would
ha resulted and dissension created of a char
acter that Ike parte ouuld Illy idlerd to eadure.
By avoiding hostilities within Us organisation it
would be more perfectly strengthened for the Im
portant work before It in tho coming State elec
tion. Much aa I feel honored by the expressions of
confidence and support on the part of many friends
yel, it ia clear to my mind that the interval of the
Democratic party would be better preserved by
ignoring personal ambition, rather than inviting
uch eon tests for their gratification.
With Ureal Herpect,
