The Grunt orguut uru making a
great ado over the laot that (he July
stiiteincnt of tho Treasury Depart
ment shows that our government em
ployes have reduced tho national debt
nearly a million and a half during the
month of Juno. Tho ofllclul figures are
H,431,2-l!i.Bi!, about tho sumo that ft
was the 1st of J line ; and if tho reduc
tion is the same- during the other ten
months, tho reduction at the cud of
the year will aggregate about eighteen
million) of dollars.
Header, take a look ut this bluff
game which our agents are playing off
on us. In our lust Congress the Radical
passed a new tax bill, imposing an ad
ditional tariff of 20 porceut, on sugar,
25 per cent, on tobacco and cigar, and
50 per cent, on liquors, and various
other commercial commodities for the
purpose of "raising tho wind" and post
poning Busponsion on tho part of tho
Govornniont until after tho Presiden
tial election. Tho taxes to bo raked
into tho Treasury by this tariff bill
were sot down by tho Department
agents at forty millions of dollars an
nually, which was to be set apart as u
kind of sinking fund to cancel tho
"national blessing," loyally bestowed
upon a five people. "Sow, what is tho
result of this Radical financiering ?
Tho Grant agents aro collecting over
threo millions per month off the tax
payers, yet they show a reduction of
less than half .that sum. Now, if our
loyal friends will hand ns over three
million cash per month, wo will guar
antee to reduce tho ''national blessing"
tiro and a half millions jxr month. This
is one million a month better than tho
present agents are doing. Such agents
should bo kicked into the river and
drowned. Tho man who bus 810 hand
ed to him to pay upon a claim of $220
during the year, and only succeeds in
having 818 crediled on the back of
the note, had better bo discharged and
put at something less expensive to oth
er people.
In other words: It Grant & Co.
collect forty millions of taxes off the
pcoplo in addition to tho amount col
octod for ton yoars past, and reduco
tho "national blessing" eighteen millions
during tho year wo demand a change,
so fur as wo arc concerned.
Tiik Governorship. Two months
ago we hail not less than eight fundi
dates in tho field for Governor in this
Stato. But by some cause or other,
tho nearer wo approach to tho period
for holding our Sluto Convention tho
fewer tho candidates ; nnd it seems to
us at this distanco from tho Erie Con
vention, as though that body would
nominate ox-Governor lligler lor tho
position indicated by a decided major-
ity, although he has protested against
it on every occasion. Tho living.mov-
iug element in our party, outside of
the moro professional politicians seem
to demand his nomination and insist
that ho should ignore his personal
teclings in tho matter and allow his
name to be used for Governor on (his
centennial occasion. Ho is in daily
receipt of letters and dispatches to this
effect, and it looks us though there
was a general uprising all over tho
State calling upon him to "stand up,"
William Allen like, and lead ns to vic
tory in November. Such a result
would be very gratifying to us and
wo hope to bo ablo to chronielo tho
fact that our neighbor has been called
to perform this work. Ho would
make a noblo canvasser.
