Fatal Accident. Wo leant that
Frcdorick Shaffer, an aged and eitecmed oilis.cn
of Brady township, was killed on the Low Orado
Railroad, on Friday last. It appear! that the
pay ear was going west from tha tonnel, running
at the rata of forty miles an hour, and at an
unusual time. (Mr. Sbaflor waa crossing on tbo
township road leading from his house, three miles
east of Rumbarger, on a eurva In the road, and
being aomewbat deaf he did not know that a train
was approaching until It struck faiin, breaking his
left arm and a number of his ribs and pitching
him down over an embankment twenty feat high.
He was picked up fearfully mangled, and survived
about an hour, remaining sensible until death
relieved hlut of his paius. An Inquest was held
on bis body and the jury decided that "Frederick
Shaffer was killed by being struck by an engine
through the M'glect of tba engineer, fur not hav
ing blown the whittle when the train waa ap
proaching a orosilng." His ago was 70 years, 6
months and 8 days.
Mr. Bhaffor was one of the first settlers tn that
township, and .Brady bus lost una of its boat oRI-
sens. He leaves a widow Cathnriuu- a daugh
ter of the lute Isaac Bloom, Sr., who fur many
years resided about a mile north of Curwonsville.
We have known them as "Undo Fred" and "Aunt

Bahn BrnNKD. Wo ioarn from the
Punxsutawnoy Spirit, that th new barn of Ahrain
Bowers, of tinskill township, JetTrrsoo oounty,
was burned on the night of tba 17th inst. A load 1
of grain, with a wagon and harness, threshing j
wachiDo and other articles were destroyed with
tbo burn. Mr. Bowers has been peculiarly an
fortunate, having bad bis barn, which was fitlod
with grain and hay, destroyed about a year ago.
There docs not term to bo auy doubt as to tho
fact, that the barn was sot on fire by some evil
disposed person or person, Oo the sight of the
fire, between 9 and 10 o'clock, Mr, Bowers was
aroused from his slumber by a noiie at the door
of hit bouse. n got up, lighted a candle, and
upon examination, found that tome one bad en
tered his shop, procured a brace and bit, and had
bored around the lock of ono of the doors of his
bouse After some little time, not finding any
one, be returned to bed, and In about three quar
ters of ao hour after, he discovered bis barn to bo
on fir. Through the effort of hiinaelf and fami
ly, and some near neighbors, his bouse was saved,
bat many fine froit trees were deitrnycd. The 1
barn and its contents wens Insured in the Lysom-1
Ing for $1,500, which amount will conic far short
of Mr. Bowers' loss. I

intimacy existing between tbe wife of the mur

bad frequently been made by Blbley In ease any
Interference was mada with him. On tbe evening
