Lock Haveners are making an effort
to get a railroad built from Jersey Shore to that
city, to as to oonneot with the Catlawlssa road.
Well, we have no doubt if the eitltens of that city
will do Just what the ClearEclderi and Curwent
villieni did (pay for It), they can bare a road too.
Dead. Rov. John Towner, formerly
of Bellefontr, but lately of Canton, Ohio, diod at
the latter place a few weeks ago, aged (1 years.
Mr. Towner removed to Ohio in 1663. Previous
to that time he had been Ave times elected Regis
ter and Recorder of Centra county, lie was woll
koowa to many eltiiens of Cleardcld county, lie
leaves a widow, ana no and six daughters to
asourn his demise.
Tbo Williameport Bullrtin says that
Filbert, Otto A Co., have told their mill" site and
piling grounds, on tho burned districts, about ten
acres, with their stock f logs, to P. Herdie, for
$135,000. The stock Is estimated at between Ire
and six million feet. A few years ago the greater
part of this land was purchased from Herdie,
Lenta A White at $S00 per acre ; now Herdie buys
tt back at an advance of over 000 per cent. :

Drowned. A man named John 51.
Lowe was drowned in Tront Run on Saturday
morning last. He was a floater and in the employ
of Peter McQeorge. The body was brought to
this place, where It was properly prepared for
burial and then sent to Lis home In Huntingdon
eounty on Monday morning's train, na was a
young man, about 26 years of aga, unmarried, and
was the ooly son of a widowed mother, who Is loft
alone to mourn bis aad fata.

eystem of keeping their roads In repair in Lan
caster eounty which might be adopted with profit
by the township authorities of this eounty. . The
roads are let out to tht lowest bidder, to be kept
la repair for one year, and tho supervisors of
Fulton township, after six years' trial, announce
that they hare been able to reduce tht tax, and
hart greatly Improved roads. This two-fold Im
provement of highways should attract considera
ble attention.

storm of rain, tnow and wind a little weather.

by between 8 and 7 o'clock next morning the
pressure waa so great on tuts side as to carry oft
the pocket boom, which waa full of Lock llaven
logs. Shaw, Towns A Co., had about one million
feel earned down ; Pardee A Cook, six or seven
hundred thousand, and Beat, Hopkins A Wey
mouth bad a half miilioa or more. A number of
raftt went over tbe dam during the night, etll
mated at high at fifty, which it probably a little
nign.
THE JAW
Is estimated to have backed up fifty million (so
thinks Win. Barrows), while some run it as high
as one hundred million. These estimates are
very speculative and only serve to show that
there was an immense namber of logs stopped
uere, wnica were ptieu np in every imaginable
shape. As here were many rafts on tbe Lock-
port shore, the logs piled up oa tlem, and some
are fonr or five deep with logs on them. The
bridge was hard pressed, but it passed through
wiiuoui serious uamage.

Is yet to break the Jam of logs and raftt on tho

more or less covered with logs. It is to be broken
by contract. There la also a Jam on the side
boom or basin at Shaw, Towns A Co.'s mill, with
a oanal boat locked in by the logs, and no doubt
more or less damaged. This Jam oa tbe other
side is the hardest lo break, but It is not interfer
ing with the run of logs and oonsequenllv Is not
dangerous, though It breaks up Ihe running ef
rails so long as ii is more, ine losses cannot be
?;iven. The logs carried away belonging to Lock
laven will be saved at Williamsport, and this

It would take to saw them up, unless exchange of

damage Is trifling to wbat was threatened and
would likely have occurred tf the Jam had not

to the Messrs. Myers, and they are hard at work
at it.

here to control the running of rafts, so that there
may bt order tnd dispatch. Tht tuggcation has
been several times made la these columns, but to
far nothing has been done. Now every man runt
on his own hook, and every season shows tht in
jurious effects of not having Ihe tquara timber
under proper control. At thitisaurt of thing
ma everyooay e nusiness, and consequently
nobody's business, it does not get accomplished.
Ir the lumbermen do not act on it, let our City
Council make application, as an act of nrolectiun
to Ihe interests of tht tity. This Is tha sqnart
timber market, and it behooves ths eity to give
ell the prelection it can to Ihe Important Interests
involved. When these things occur there are
many long faces of regret, and every one says
Ibis ought to bt dont and Ibat ought to be done,
and the result It tht danger is over with the in
Jury, aud nothing gelt done. If something is not
done bv the next meetinc of Council, wa none
they will take some notice of the matter, and If
mere ne not time to get tbe act through Ibis year,
at least lay the groundwork for getting it through
next session of tbe Legislators, which will be In

William Mollvain, Esq., a member of the
