Col. William 1'hillips, President of

and highly esteemed eltlsens of that city. His
death will be seriously felt In the business and
social circles of the Iron City.
Dead for this Time. The defeat
f the eompulsatory school bill bj the House, is
the most sensible thing that body bas done this
winter. Tbic generation has not been inflated
enough with European ideas to put up with such
royal governmental views, and we now say to the
friends of popular edoea'.!ou If they persist In
pressing this odious measure that they will upset
the present school system.

Rafting. The river has been at a
rafti ag stage for a week past, and nearly all of
line lumber has gone down. A gentleman from
ithe upper end of the river Informs us that but a
mall number of rafts are left behind. On Satur
day and Sunday, there was probably a largor run
of timber than on any two days in several yean.
If our lumbermen are successful In procuring
good prices for their timber, matters will brighten
