New Enterprise -We iourn that
Mr. W. T. Hamilton, formerly engaged In the
pottery business at Lutlienburg, has formed
partnership with Mr. Win. Kewsome of this place,
and that tbey bare about perfected arrangements
for commencing the manufacture of fire-brick
vans, Ac, from fire-clay supplied from a large
Vein on the property of Mr. Newsome, south of
town. Mr. Hamilton has had considerable ei
perlenca in this business, and the clay having
been tested and found oaoellent, we presume the
enterprise promises rich returns to those engaged

A IIiavy Haul. A correopondent
In forms us that a span of horsee,owned by Jeremiah
Xyler, of Graham township, this eounty, and
driven by Wm. Baumgardner, hauled at one load,
on the 10th of February last, on the road leading
from Bnow Shoe, Centre county, to tbe river, oppo
aite Bait Lick, two sticks of pine timber 70 feet In
length one being II Inches square, and the other
10i20 Inches, making a total of 398 cubic feet.

The Williamspobt Fire. This city
was ue scene or a lerrioie eonnagration on Bun
day morning last. The lira broke out about one
o'clock on Sunday morning, in tbe piling yard of
Brown, Early A Co.'s saw mill, which destroyed
all tbe lumber, amounting to about twenty million
feet. It was piled on thirty acres of ground, be
tween the above named yard and White, Lents A
White's saw mill. In its course, It consumed
Filbert, Otto A- Co'i saw mill and C. U. K route
A Co.'s brick planing mill, and also fourteen
dwelling houses oa Filbert street. Tbe fire was
got under control at eight o'clock. Tbe wind
blew a gale during tbe first part of the Ire. It Is
reported one man was burned to death in the
brick planing mill. Tbe loss Is estimated at
1000,01)0 ; Insurance, $150,000. The following are

The Clinton Republican publishes
tne following : "Airs. Alary rerer, a widowed lady,
residing In this olty, has a Bible in her possession
with which a curious incident is connected. Dur
ing a terrible hurricane, which pasted over some
portions of Westmoreland county in tbe summer
of 1860, this Bible was carried a dittance of four
and one-half miles by ths force of tha wind, and
lodgod ia a pine sappling. Tha book waa lying
across a limb of the sapling opened at 122d Psalm
which Is nearly the exaot middle of tho book. Kot
a leaf was torn, not a scratch to be seen, tare
where It fell on tha branch, and there only a
light Impression made on the leaf. Mrs. Fcrer
was thrown down and had her arm broken In
three places by the same storm. The story comes
to us duly authenticated, and though it aeema
soaroely probable, It Is undoubtedly true."

The eastern extension of the Allegheny Val

The Bulletin says that a large number of
saloon-keepers in Williamsport have abandoned
the traffio In drink.
Tha Brady's Bend Iron Works, which sus
pended operations last December, hara been
purchased by tha Allegheny Valley Railroad

Kemmorer's flouring mill, near Milton, was
burned on Saturday night a week. Loss, $22,000 j
partially insured. About 3,000 bushels of grain
and 200 barrels of flour wore consumed

The East Broad Top Railroad will be graded

An old resident of Hollidaytbnrg, named
Jacob Snyder, fell dead on the street In that plaoe,
on Sunday a week ago. He was 90 years of age,
and had been engaged In tha drug business for
a number of years

Mrs. Costello, a widow, about thirty years of
age, was burned to death In Titusville, on the
evening of tha 27th nit. She was addicted to
drink, and, it it supposed, was intoxicated at tbe

D. D. Williams, Cathier of the Conneautvllle
National Bank, was re-arrrited on Friday, the
3d Inst., by S. B. Benton, Government detective,
and lodged in jail, his bail having surrendered
him. Recent examination of the bank books
show a defalcation of $27,000, In addition to the
reported robbery of f 17,000, which eauted sns
piclont of Williams' guilt.
