Marbled Paper.
This, much usod by bookblndorn, is
produced in a very curious way. The
nnmo is not exactly suitublo, sooing
that low of Iho specimens nro imita
tions of real marblo ; but it has grad
ually become, appliod lo sheets of pa
per of which ono surmco is mnclo t'u
imilnlo any kind of stono or wood.
Small brown spots on a light ground,
marble, valuing on a shady ground,
curled patterns and wavy pultorns,
nil nro produced in groat diversity.
The colors aro of the usual kind, such
as Noplos yollow, yollow oohor, yel
low luko, orpimont, vordigrin, roso
pink, red lead, carmino, torra di Sien
na, Dutch pink, indigo, Prussian blue,
vorditor, umbor, ivory black, etc;
thoy aro ground up very fino with pro
pared wax and wutor and a few drops
of alcohol. A solution of gum is made
of gum tragacanth, alum, gall, and
water, and placed in a trough or shal
low flat vessel. Color is thrown on
tho surface of this gum water, usually
by striking a brush aguirist a stick, so
ns lo produce a shower ot sprinkles,
l'igmonts of different tints and differ
ent thicknesses or degrocs ot consis
tency are thrown on; somo spread
moro than others, and thus a divor
aity of patterns is produced. Somo-
Vinics tho color is thrown on by moans
of a pencil of very long brietlos; it is
diversified by means o( a rod, held
upright and carried along amongst
tho colors in a wavy or spiral course;
and it is further cut np into toi-taos
linos hy passing a kind of comb along
it. All this takes piaco on tho enr-
faco of tho gum solution in tho, vat.
When tho vat is prepared, a sheot of
paper is laid down flat on the solution
euro being takon thnt every part ol
tho sufaco Bhall be wetted; tho paper
takes up a layer or paint, fancifully
disposed in a pattern or dovico, and is
hung up to dry. In order that ono
color may not bo blended or confused
with another, they aro ground up
-with different liquids, somo watery,
xomo rummv. somo 01 v. 1 lie. unita.
lions of marblo, gray and red granilo,
nnd fancy woods, aro certainly not
very faithful ; but tho paper is lively
in appearance, and romains clean and
"bright a long time whon polished.
This polishing is effected by moiston
log llio colored surfaco of the papor
with a little soap, anil rubbing it with
a picco of smooth marblo,. an ivory
knob, a glass ball, or nn agato burn
islior. Beautiful products have been
produced within tho last few years
under tho names ot iriuescout and op.
ulofcont paper. .Like tbo commoner
kinds, thoso recoivo colored devices
on ono surfuco ; but great delicacy
and care are called for in tho process
es to produco the exquisito play of
light and shado which suggosts tho
names given to thoso varieties.
An Inexpensive Incubator.
A lady writes as follows to th
"Poultry Bulletin : "The idoa having
BUL'L'CHlod itsolf to ma during tho pirn
sprinir, that tho eggs of domestic
fowls might be hatched by somo sim
nlo and inexpensive process of artifi
cial incubation, I determined lo make
tlie experiment : and having succeed
d, even boyond my own expecta
tions, I send you a brief account of
my method, which is not a patcntod
.affair, aud which any ono can easily
understand and construct for himself,
if so disposed, for my simplo contn
vanco I took an old cano-scat chair
'from which the back was removed
and made ovon with tho seat. Aftor
removing Iho cano-boltom, I look

ed, tho pan being almost exactly tho
mo size as tho bottom of the large
..tlish-pan, and resting steadily upon
tho little pooblev upon this invortoil
ipio-plato I mado ft bod of a doston or
moro thicknesses o'f old muslin sheet
ing, cut rou-d to Ct tho pan and laid
smoothly npon tho bottom. On this
bod I placed tbo egga for batching,
and among them I placed thermom
eter. Over Iho top of tho largo pan
I sproad an old woolen blankot, sev
eral times folded. I then lightod a
small korosono lamp and placed it on
tho floor, immediately under tho con
tro of the largo pan. 1 next turned
up tli o fin mo gradually until the tnor
oury in tho thermometer roso to 105;
And at this point I strovo to kocp the
temperature, for throo weeks, and gen
erally succocded. But at ono lime,
owing to a defective burnor, tho tnm-
peraturo rose to 120", and destroyed
vitality in almost all the eggs. At
other timos.it fell as low as U() and
06, but tho egga generally hatchod
at tho accustomed season. This fluc
tuation in tho boat generally occur
red at night, and was attributable
either to depressions in the atmos
plioro or irrogularity of combustion
in tho lamps which gonoratod tho heat
for my incubator. My oggs were
prinkled occasionally from about the
ovotiih way after feeing placed in the
incubator till the poriod of hatching."
