Martin Kline, an estecmod cilizc
of Lawrenoe township, died at his residence on
tha 18th Inst., aged 60 years, t months and
days. He leave! a wife and large family, though
nearly all grown up. lie was a son of Solomon
Kline, one of the first settlers In this eounty.
The greater part of Modoc City,
Butler eouty, was destroyed by Are on the 17th.
Thirty.fiva buildings were ooosumed. The loss
Is estimated at over one hundred thousand dot
lars. This place was one of the largest In the
Butler oil district.
The people of Clarion now talk

Tims Changed. It will bo seen by

vention (found elsewbore in this Issue), which met
in the Court House, on the 17th lull., that the
Democratic primary elections will hereafter be
held on the Saturday preceding the third Tues
day of September. The election occurs this year
on the I2th and the convention meets on the 16th.
Court commences on the fourth Monday (the 28th)
and on Tuesday, the 20th, we will hold our usual
ratification meetings. This ts a decided improve
ment.

pleased to learn that numerous new coal and rail
road enterprises are being entered lots In tho

while the opening of the "Low Grade" railroad in

will produce a revolution In that section. Local
prospeots are bright. Indeed.
Browned. William ManHfield, em
ployed on a log Job, was drowned In Uailey's
dam, an Anderson creek, on Wednesday, the 18th
loit. He and three others were on their way to
dinner, and while crossing the creek on a log
were all thrown in, and Mansfield was drowned
before he could be rescued. He belonged to the
provlooe of New Brunswick, where he has no
living relative, exoopt a sister. Tha water was
drawn oat of the dam, and the body found a
short distance below where he fell la. His body
was taken to Mr. Jojieph R. Arnold'! residence,
properly eared for, and buried the neit day at

Ihe Lecture. On last Wednesday
evening the young and talented female lawyer,
Miss Phoobe Cousins, delivered her popular lec
ture, "Education ef Women.'' Owing to the In
clement state of the weather, there was not as
large an andlence as then would otherwise hare
been, still the lecture was a grand suoeess. It
far surpassed even th most fluttering expecta
tions. Of the many brilliant and Intellectual
women who adrooate and devote their anergics
to Ihe cause which Mist Cousins has so earnestly
eiponsed, we think she eclipses them all. In her

culiarly mild, handsome and pleasing cast of fea
