The Silbbt Minstrel Troupe.
Thii combination of home talent gave four of
their mirth provoking and aide-splitting exhibi
tions in Venter's Ilall, on Thursday, Friday and
Saturday crenlngs of lest week, and also a mati
nee for children on Saturday afternoon. We can
not speak too highly of these amateur artist!.
They are all yonng mea engaged la business here
and got np and perfected then entertainments
during their leisure hours, Each entertainment
was crowded almost te suffocation, and that their
efforts were appreoiatod, Ii folly attested by the
rapturous and repeated encore! which greeted
them from all parti of the Hall. The matinee for
children on Saturday afternoon was highly enter
taining to the three or four hundred young folks
In attendance, and tickled them almost to death.
We do not care about particularising in our notice
of tha Sllsby'a, lest we do Injustio to the whole
troupe, but Maynard, Stewart, Bathurst, DeHuff,
Boate, Dorrla, DcArmltt, Rousb, Wighaman,
Dougherty, and the Bilsby Brother! deserve
eipeoial mention. Some of them exhibit a high
order of teleut, aad we trust, now that they bare
gained as envious notoriety ai mlnitrel perform
ers, they will give oi mere of their pleasing and
highly ohaste, dignified and artistic porfortnanoes.
We almost neglected to mention the orchestra.
Prof. Kline deserves much praise for the musical
each of those entertainments. It waa first-class
and would hare reflected credit to any of the first
class theaters is our large olties. It was the sub
ject of much favorable comment by the audience.

"Valuation andTaxes." We find
the following sensible article, ea thii peculiar
subject In the last Journal."
Frequent eomnlalnU are made In referenoo to
an increase In taxes, because of a higher rate of
valuation. Ibis Is not necessarily tha caae. A
low valuation does not in itself make low taxes,
nor does a high valuation make high taxes. The
result attained is entirely owing to the officers
levying tbe tax. It supervisors and Reboot III-
rectora who are the omoera most complained of
will take the highest valuations made and as-
sess a small per oentage thereon tbe taxes will be
low; and, etee ewrea, if they take a low ralaalioa
and assess to the utmost extent the law allows
them, the taxes will be high. We are farorable
to a higher rate of raluation, because by that
means only can weattract the notice of those un
acquainted with this region to our great and ral
uable resources to our lumber, coal, iron ore.flre
clay, ate. A low valuation always earries with
it the idea of poverty and eerrenness; while a
higher rata p rouges wealth, thrift, and unlimited
resources. Then, why object to a higher rate of
raluation? Klect tironorly qualified men men
of intelligence and discrimination to fill your
township offices, and wo shall hear no more of
high taxes heoause of our property being valued
at something near Its real worth."
