In Glrard has sent us an jnsido view, or
rather an autibiograpbr, of the early
' days of the eanos-paddler. - Wo are
- thankful for it, but there is much we
' cannot use. We have no quarrel with
his paronts, under whose are Tom
1 was, wbon a boy, ana we suppose
thoy did the test they could with bitn.
! We do not prey upon that kind of
offal, .it is the days and acts of his
. manhood wo wish to discuss, lie
. - writes' learnedly about ansossments
1 and taxation, yet he knows Icbs about
' tbo subject than the aes does about its
roaster's crib., And wore a client to
.. ask him to show ah assessment book
and the law regulating Xbe question,
he would have to resort to a substi-
, tuto. In fact, he succoeds in nothing
. except as a libolcr and in tho role of
a bypocnto. Id these he bas no ri-
' val in the county. - '
' llowovor, his recohl epistle needs
no lur'.her notice. . But, we will look
at the one be issued last fail, when
' we charged upon hint the design of
tampering with the election returns
of Huston township, which bis move
monts then indicated, and which bo
inadvertently confesses. - Besides, his
midnight raid through the "green
woods' to Huston indicated some
thing wicked, because he never before
nor aince manifested half the energy
and seal in doing a good act.
But the libeler proceeds in bis allu
" sions to us in the following christian
atylo :
. "SnfflM it for tho present, to Inquire what hii
opinio! M to the truthfulness of my circuit U
worm, id view or Dn participation In tho very
; frandi which called forth tha eireulare. Ha paved
hit way to fail preetntelerkihlp In tha Commit
t sioners' offioa by complaining of tho large salary
paid tha former clerk. Mr, liradlov. Ha all (need
that tha work eoold be dona for much less tun."
That ia a square lio.
"When ba fell the poiition ho charges tha
county, aa a aalarj, about double the amount be
aan namea aa a sufficient eompensntlou."
In this he uses less words, but it is
a larger lie than the other. He is
improving in that line daily. But b
-, proceeds ; :
"lie lacks on an additional bill of arar fire
. Donated doiiara for printing. (See account of
receipts and expenditures for Clearfleld county,
in CiearOeld frvatiYeaa of February 26th, 1873.)
1 bat is business. The bills are on
file, call and examine tbem, and if we
have charged tho county more thnn
. we charge individuals, for similar
work, we will refund four fold, and
vice versa. .Come nlon&honest Thorn
s J Again :
"While working np thla fraud in order to se
oura hie preeent poeition, be waa alio looking
with a Jeeloas ere to another soft seat He want
ed to bare n double bold upon tha tax-paysrs
tha county. He Ihougbt the would ba till;
enoogn 10 elect mm eouoij Treasurer.
There is not a word of truth in thi
whole paragraph, though emanating
. from a Deputy Sunday School Sapor
intendent. But this modern Judas
continues:
"With thli purpose In view, and aniloua to
maxe tnai omco ai profitable aa poiiible, na be
came deeply interested ia questions of iikii
meat and taxation. Along ia 186.1. we find him
writing lengthy editorials open the importance of
a bigoer valuation of ine property throughout
ine county.-
Yes. and it would be well if such
blockheads as yourself would take
littlo more interest in that question
We have not met a singlo individual
who hat any brains, and ever gave
the subject thought, but concedes that
our "editorials'' are right. Tbis sin
gle fact gives ns roal enjoyment, and
such as a thousand liBelers like Mur
ray cannot destroy. Again be pro
ceeds :
"He complained (really that tha triennial ae
sessment of 1888 wai altogether loo low. He
eooke tamely of the iznoraooe of Aueeeora and
eilisene, and the damage they had dona their
eonscienoes by valuing properly too low. (See
hie editorial in Clearfield HcpMica of March
6tb, 1803). lie oarried theee opinion! into effect
by doing all ia bia power to inercaee, to aueb an
. enormoui amount, the eseoesraent of 1671. To
prorc that be wns responsible mora than aoy one
elie, for Ihe high assessment of 1871, we bare
only to refer to the tact that, 1 the editorial al
luded to, be undertook to dictate what tha amount
of the assessment ihould be, and whea tha as
easement of 1X71 wai made, it waa eomebnw or
tbar tlretched np to hit figures."
Tbis last stretch, on assessments
and taxation, and the duties of Com
missioners and Assessors, dovelops tho
ignoramus most completely, and pro
claims the lawyer an ass In every line,
in rolution to the law which regulates
tho quostion.
- Just bora tha political highway
man drops us and in bia wicked, god
less mannor, proceods to libel our
wholo party, by attacking "certain
mombors of the ring," (which exists
in bis imagination only,) In tho follow
ing moek stylo s

saade on that sight, by certain mem ben of the

This is a whopper, and a falsehood
- worthy of a Credit llobilier.
. In order to lolly lest the veracity
of this creature Murray, we pronounce
Lis allegation that ho "sas notiflod

Mr. Editor: Our . local election
for Mayor, Treasurer and Ward offi

for Mayor, D. W. Seiler, was defeated
by a majority or US voles against

A sonsation was created boro on
Thursday afternoon by tho announce

has been discovered by which it was
sought to obtain money from tho

pretense'.. Some unknown aooundrel
has sent out two circulars to various
banking bouses In tha State for funds,
for tbe ostensible purpose of passing
tbe aot to repeal the usury law. One
of these circulars bad the forged
names of almost evory one of our
prominent banker hero attaohed lo
it. - This oiroular la dated February

letters in reply to these circulars are
reported to have been recolved at the
poitodice and lilted by unknown par

are, but roport implicates two mem

number of letters received at tbe post-
office for R. II. Gibbons, the impres

success financially. In tbe Iloase

of Messrs. Young, McCreary and Or
