Revenge of Doubtful Proprioty.
. On n recent Sunday, as the Rev

in-York, To., was conducting tlio sor

town. York county, tlio soxlon banded
hi in a note. After tlio sermon was
completed, tho minister announced
that he had tho pleusuro of stating
tuat a coupio ot tlio concregation do
sired to ho unitod in tho holy bonds
of matrimony, and that tho candidates
hhmild immediately present thorn
solves. Thero wus a considerable
ilultcr in tlio assemblage every eye
ntarintr around to see tlio iinppy coupio.
After sonio dolay a buoyant coupio
camo marching up (ho iiialo to the
altar. J he reverenoti gonllomnn im
mediately proceeded with tho core
inony.and tlio groom answered prompt

nnd astonishment of the clergyman
nnd tho audionco, when it camo to the
undo 8 turn, she answered just as
promptly. "JNo, 1 will not. and emu
mgly left the church nil alone, leaving
the liulf married inao in a quandary
ns to what to do.
Tho young lady has sinco stated
that she thus treated tlio man out of
revenge for his conduct toward her.
Yours before they were engaged, the
night arrived for tho wedding, the
lady and her friends were wailing, but
Uio groom luiiod to appear, lime
passed and ebo had another suitor,
Tho deceitful ono roturned and for a
long time endeavored to regain tho
atiection ot t lie lady. At lust suueora

she soys to huvo revongo for bis former
treatment). Months slid by and sho
agreed to bo married to him In church;
wbon she so cruelly tecamo oven Willi

A Cumous raopiiKCV. "A Poei.
tivist," who, there is evory reason to
siipiioso, was Andrew Jackson Davis,
of Jiuw York, in November of lust
year published in tho Modern Thinker
tho following predictions which, to
say the least, were curious :
' 1. 1 predict that within the coming
-two years this country will experience
(he worst financial panic known to its
history. It will be moro widespread
and disastrous than even that ot 183,,
All tho debts crcntod by our paper
roonoy era will bo wiped out or com
promised. Land will tempornrly fall
to one hall its present value.
- 2. This panic will be precipitated,
in all probability, by tho fuiluro of the
.Norlhorn l'uciuo Kailroad, and por
haps of tho bankers who manago it.
This will bring to light bucIi an amaz
ing amount of fraud in connection
wilb our railroad, as to discredit all
slocks, good or bad. The bears will
bold high carnival. The men of moat
repute in financial circles and on tho
"street" will provo to - bo common
cheats. ' Whilo tho panic will com
mence from all appearances, in rail
road circles, and will be confined for a
time to tho new Western enterprises,
it will spread Gnnlly to tho National
banks, and will develop an amount ol
rottenness in those institutions which
is now beyond tho power ol the imag

Tub Bui dob Across Niagara.
Tho bridgo acrosH the Niagara Hivcr
from Buffalo to Fort Erio is finished,
the lust of the immonso trusses being
placoj in tho position only a few days
ago. These spans or trusses are from
197 to 210 feet in length, aro raade'of
iron, and of tho pattern known as tbo
Pratt truss; thono rest on eight piers
and two abtitmonts, all buit of solid
masonry, the piers being incased in an
armor of half-inch iron plate, to pro
tect them from the ice, which forms
in great quantities in tlio river, and
with re-enforcomcnts from tho lake
makes a very formidable destructive
agency. The bridge has two draws,
one of which is said to bo the largest
in tho country, it having an opening
of ICO foot. The funds for the build
ing of tho bridgo are furnished by a
stock company of Canadian and Ameri
can capitalists, and is leased to tho
Orand Trunk, Great Western, Air
Lino, the Canada Southern, and tho
New York, AYcst Shoro and Chicago
Railroads. Thore is only ono track

was made throe of tho roods now using

the plans.
Vaiuetiiss or Coal. Bituminous.
This is a somewhat deceptive torn);
it docs not mean that any bitumon or
mineral pitch, soluble in other, is con
tained in it, but that tho gases, oxy
gon, hydrdgon, and nitrogen, enter
more Inrgoly into its composition than
in Anthracite, and gives it a more
flaming character in burning.
Semi-Bituminous Its that particu
lar kind which, whilo it yiolds coke
-nnd combustible gnses, yot contains
only 11 or 12, and always less than 18
.por cent, of volatile combustiblo mat
ter, and not less than TO, and novcr
more than 84 por cent, of carbon.
Anthracite Contains 85 to 03 por
.cent, of carbon, rnroly more than "1
per cont. of volatilo matter; inthoex
tromo western portion of tho basin a
Bcmi-Anlhracito containing as much
its 10 or 15 per cont. has boon fcund.
