Life in the Country. ,
AN EXPERIENCE AS TOLD BY TITE DAN
V BCIIY NEWS.
Tho city man who goea into tho
country to spend tho summer must
make) up his mind to learn something
of tho routine of rural life. A New
York man who is spending tho hot
weather Bcoon with a family on Pine
street, was osked by the lady of the
houso if he would luko a hen off the
nest, as it wanted to set, and sho didn't
want it to. "Certainly," said ho, and
immediately started out to tho barn
whore the bona were kept, to crush
out tho matornal prospects of this par
ticular one. lie went straight to
the nest to lift bor off, and reached
out bis hand for that purpose, but im
mediately drow it back again, and
tucked it np under tho other arm, and
squeezed it a little, while be drow up
bis lips as if about to whistle some
thing. Then ho Blood thcro and
stared at the hen, and she lilted up
her head, and etnred back nt him,
winking bor oyes with singular veloo
ity. ''Get off, won't you f" said he,
alXor a pause. Sho made no renponse.
lie drew out bis hand and lookod at
a red spot on ono of the knuckles, and
then put tho knuckle fti his inoulb to
cool it, looking all tho whilo at the
hen, and wondering how on ourlh she
moved no quickly. The longor bo
eyed her, tho loss inclined he felt to
touch her, and finally be climbod np a
poet to a beam which ran ovor tho
nest, and working his way out on it
till he got just above the ben, took off
Ins hat una shook u ai oer, anu uu
viscd her to get. Hut she only lookod
np at him, ono eye at a time, and
.clurked ominously, lie told her il
she didn't leuvo bo would come down
thero ond kick her through the barn,
but immediately gave up tho blood
thirsty doiiign when ho reflected that
it was a dumb animal, and couldn't
reason like a human being.. Then he
hupponcd to think of bis panls, which
wero white linen, and rubbed bis fin
gers on the beam to find them full of
black dust, which leu turn to worn Die
body around to look at the pants, and
while makinh thi very natural move,
be suddenly slipped, made a plunge
to renew his hold, shrieked for help,
slipped again, and came down on top
of the ben and the nost, smashing
them both to tbo floor, upsetting a
barrel, and filling the air with dust,
foathers, hon noisos, and shriekM.
When the family reached tho burn.tho
unfortunate man, looking something
likq n circus poster on lojs, had got
on hid feet, and was turning around,
and rubbing his heud in an abstracted
manner, Bnd every titno he turned, an
omelette on white linen base came to
view, whilo the heo stood up in tho
furthest corner on ono leg, with, a
look of mingled astonishmont and re
proach oo hor countenance. After
five minutes of industrious application
with a chip, the gentleman was escort
ed into the houso, whoro his head was
bathed with spirits, and bis comfort
generally attended to.
Brutish Treatment of Prisoners. 1
My presence at an English prison,
says a correspondent, gave me an
ample opportunity of becoming famil
iar with prison panishmonl. It was
simply a brutish treatment. Then
prisoners wore treated exactly like so
many dumb brutes. They were never
permitted to speak until first address
ed by a keeper. If thoy opened their
mouths to say a casual word il was a
violation of the rules of tho prison,
and tbey would bo punished. Knoh
one of llio keepers had completo pow
er to castigate any of the iirixoiiors
who might liunpon to offend against
this system. The punishment in those
days was something barbarous. Each
of tho keopcrs, besides being armed,
carried a whip of fine hemp cord, con
sisting of nine lushes, each one of
which was knotted at tho end. With
this instiument the keeper would re
lalinlo open a prisoner whenever de
tected talking. I have seen a six-foot
koopor put the whip in bis hand, and
carefully spreading out the lashes so
that every one of them would slriko,
bring the Insh down on a little puny
stripling who would not havo the
strength tostnnd, simply for tho crirao
of speaking. This was dono before
all the prison. Aftor the first few
times, I would never boo it dono. I
would turn away. It was too brutal.
Frequently they would give a prisoner
a thousand lushos for certain offenses.
They would not be given all at tho
sumo timo, but were continued along
for several days. The prisoner's back,
which soon been mo sore and lacerated,
would thou be washed off in at i IT
brino.
Another punitdimont under tho si
lent system was carrying a rough yoke
weighing from forty to sixty pounds,
although that most frequently resorted
to was the lush. It wus an everyday
ocourronee to see a koopor cnll a pris
oner up, mako him tuko off his shirt,
and bring 'tho lush down upon hint,
leaving marks which he curried with
him to hip gruve. 1 can loll you a lit
tlo Initnneo of this.
Tlioro was a man hero who had
served his time out. Ho hud conduct
ed himself well, and by industry soon
became comfortably situated. Ho
married and livod very Uappiiy. Noon
afterward his wifo huppened to dis
cover tho lash marks upon his body,
and sbe then learned lor the first lime
that her husband had been in prison.
Slio booania insano, and he becamo a
broken-hearted man, when tut for
ftiM mnrks nil would havt Ncn well.
