CLEARFIELD, PA.
WEDNESDAY MORNING SEPT. S4. U!l.
How Oar Fathers Punished,
OrrlNUERI AGAlNoT TUB LAW MADE TO
APPKAA RIDICULOUS.
It is not very long ago iinoe pun
lahmonts which were principally cnl
culuted to hold tho oftoniior up to rid
icule woro so rife in Knglund thitl ono
might Buspoct that thy were intend
ed to amino the pooplo, in tho dny
wlion there was no uomio periodicals,
rather than to dotor from tho offense.
For instance, low villngos were with
out their ducking stools for scolds,
ono I) and rod and fifty yenrs ago.
Nay, the Cholmsford Chronicle for
April 10, 1801, contains tho following
paragraph :
"Last wcok a woman notorious for
her vociferation wna indicted for a
common scold at Kingston ; and tho
facts boing fully proved, she was sen
tenced to recoivc the old punishmont
of being ducked, which was accord
ingly oxocutcd upon her in the Thames
by the piopor offlcors, in a chair pre
served by the town for that purposo;
and as if to prove the justico of too
court's Bontonoe, on ber return from
tho water's aido she foil upim ono of
her acquaintance, without provoca
tion, with tongue, tooth and nail."
The drunkard's cloak was a barrel
with holes in tho top and sides, thr'o
which tho intemperate man's bend and
arms woro passed, and in this helpless
condition be was obliged to walk
through the streets of the town, the
sport of the idle boys. Tho Chinese
have a similar punishment.
A seat in the stocks cunnot have
been pleasant for a proud and retiring
disposition ; but apart from the moral
element, the severity of the punish
mont must have varied somewhat an
duly with the time of yenr. On a
fine but cloudy July day a philosophi
cal culprit who had no personal eno-
mios in his village might have borno
his sentence with considerable equa
nimity, solacing himself, perchance,
by watching the fluctuations of a
cricket match in progress on the
groon; while in a frosty Fohruary,
with a keen northeast wind blowing,
liiccabocca himself would have found
tho hour of his release a weary while
in striking.
To stand in tho pillory mast have
been an exceedingly humiliating as
well as exasperating punishment. A
man could not bo prnced in a more lu
dicrous position than with his head
and hands protruding through holes
exactly fitting them, and his body hid
away behind the planking. Flies
might wander about his nose and ears;
gnats might sting him without his be
ing ublo to drivo them off, save per
chance, by a hideous grimace, which
would only dislodge the tormentors
for an Instant, while it addod consid
erable to the grotesque, absurdity of
the culprit s appearance
The sevorily of this punishment, as
well as of the stocks, was, or course,
dependent upon tho amount of popu
lar indignation excited by theotlonso.
When this ran high, tho wrotched
man's unprotected face was in tho po
sition of a live and sentient Aunt
Sally's, an object for evory descrip
tion of missile; whilo in such a case
as Do too s, wboro sympathy was on
tho side of the Bullerer, "publio ex.
poauro became a publio ovation."
AVhon a Cairo merchant is dotectcd
in using false weights and moasures,
or in adulturating his goods, he is
placed against his own doorpost, stand
ing on tiptoe and nailed by the car to
the wood-work. It is important that
bo should get free without amputating
tho member, for that is tho penally
for theft ; and it is probablo that the
smart tradesman would be horrified
at having his little tricks confoundod
with vulgar inartislio stealing. For
tt second o (Ten so the thief loses his
other ear ; for a third his nose. By
tbe-br, perhaps I am wrong to use
the present tense, for these penalties
may bo obsolote at the present day
They may have a model jail and
a reformatory at Cairo by this time.
Naval and military punishments
seemed to havo beon very generally
framed with the idea of rendering
the offender ridiculous in tho eyes of
his comrades. Ticketing was ono of
these ; a man was so suspended by
his wrists that bis heels rested on a
wooden peg driven into the ground
Hiding tho wooden horso wus another;
tho back of this ponal stood was very
narrow, and weights attached to the
rider's legs renderod his scat all the
mora painful. Thoso punishmonls
were nut oniy numiuaiing aim ex
tremely severe, but they too often in
flicted permanont injury on the suf-
Icrors, on which lattor account they
were abolished, and for many years
the cat-o'-nine-taiis ruled supreme;
though the use of thnt instrument of
torturo was to an oxtont which excit
ed dread and sympathy, instead of
mirth.
rs-
Their vuiuu is uy u moaiua ,
ciated, but the rapidity with which
peoplo are waking up to their neces
sity and asofulncns i one of tho kig-
mucant signs 0! the times. Pew lam-
ilios are now content with one nows
papor. The thirst for knowledge is
not easily sntislled, and books, though
useful yoa, absolutely nocossarv in
their pluco fail to meet the demands
oi youth or ago. our country news
paper is eagerly sought and its con.
tents as eagerly devourod ; then comos
the demand tor tho city news, nation
al and foreign nows. Next to tho po
litical come tho literary and (cientiflo
journals. All theso are demandod to
satisfy the cravings of the active
mind.
iS'owspapcrs are also raluablo to
material prosperity. They advertise
the village, county or locality. They
spread bvlore the reader a map on
which may to traced character, drsiirn
and progress. If a stranger calls at
a hotel bo tlrst Inquires lor tho villago
newspaper; if a friond comos from a
distance tho very next thing after
family greetings, bo inquiros for your
village or county pagor, and you tool
discomfortod if you are onublo to And
a Into copy, and confoundod if yoa sro
compollud to say you do not tuks it
Newspapers are just as necessary
to fit a man for bis truo position in
lifo as food or raiment. Show us a
ragged, barefooted boy rather than
an ignorant ono. 11 is head will cover
his foot in after lifo if ho is woll sup
plied with nowspapors. Show us the
child who is engor for newspapers
Ho will make his mark In the world
if yoa gratify that dosiro for knowl
edge. Other things boing equal it is
