Great Gab Well. The greatest
gas well in tbt world is located on the Campbell
farm, about two miles from Modot City, Butlor
county, in a northeasterly direction. It is cer
tainly one of tha wonders of tho world. It was
struck about three wocks ago, and a volume of
irfaa has over since been pouring forth with a noise
like tba rush of mighty waters. The gas cornea
out with most tremendous force, Tba attempt
was made to lower a act of tools In tho well, the
weight of which was twenty-five hundred pounds.
The attempt was futile, for the gas forced them
up and away from tha holt. It is tht Intention
to lay pipet and run tha gas Into Mudoc.

Oun Khcapb. A little before lour
o'clock, on Tliurmluy' ufteruoou of last week, tho
alarm of Orel fircll was given by the workmen
uu Mr. Walleoo't new building, on Front .licet.
Like an electric shock, the alarm spread over the
town, and twin all gathered In the viciulty of Ma-eoniber-!
livery stable, when fie dames were
bursting from tho roof. So hooks, uo ladders
and but few buckets were on hand. About this
timt it looked it though the wbolt square north
of Market street and between Front and Beoond
streets, Including.tba Bhaw lloust and Mtasion
Ilouao, might as well lt surrendered to the fire
lend. But after the nerves of tbe people settled
a little, thoy went to work, and by herculean ef
forts, Hayed tha Ore from spreading southward to
tne stables or tho Bhaw House and the Mansion
House and tho adjacent buildings on Markot St.
Sheriff Pie's stablt and wood houae, Just twelve
feet iff from the burning livery stable, was used
as a breastwork. Tha fire burning tht boards on
tht outtidt, and the citiscnt deluging the inside
with water until water prevailed. At soon as the
Art wat stayed in this direction tht mass moved
to check it from spreading northward. But by
Ibis time Mr. Lcavy's and Mr. Wallaoc's stables
wore enveloped la names, and the heat became so
intense that no one eould approach within fifty
foot. Then It was evident that tht Ore could not
bo chocked until it reached Loeust street. Boon
the handsome law office and stablt of T. J. Mo
Cullough and the g.vmniatum wort envtloped In
darnel. Tht stable! burned like tinder boxes,
but Mr. McCullough's offico, tho walls of which
were to compactly built, burned very slowly, and
a large portion of it wat torn down berort it was
consnmcd, and In this manner his large fire-proof
taft was saved without sustaining any Injury
Hackman I Grecn't paint thop was pushed over
and rolled down Locuat street, out of reach of tho
dames, and HcQaughey's pump shop was demol
ished by tht firemen to aa to prevent tbo fire from
spreading to Mr. Adaiu't feed store. Mr. Kau
gle's stable, on the west side of the alloy, opposite
Mr. Plt't, was also turndown, thus preventing tbt
Ire from attacking Mr. Row's and the Shaw llouso
atables. The properties consumed were Mr. Ma
oomber'l lircrv stable, Mr. Laavy'a, Mr. Wallace's
and Mr. McCullough's stables and thclatter'slaw
offloe and the gymnasinm. Tho "burnt district"
luoka very dcsulate. Ten thousund dollars will
not replace the buildings and the material de
stroyed. Several families on tbo west lido of Beo
ond street had all their furniture moved from
their dwellings, having delivered them up to the
fire. Had there been any wind at all, we have
no doubt tho wbolt square would have been burn
ed up, and the salvation of at least half our bor
ough is a miracle. The fire originated in thebay
loft of the livery stable, and why that should 00
cur in tbo middle of tbe afternoon, when ne light
wat needed, we cannot define. None of the prop
erty destroyed wat insured.
Fire Water. Had our town been
blessed with water works, Thursday's firt would
have destroyed no more property than Mr. Ma
eombor's stable, and we have no doubt but that
tht fire would have been drowned out before It
got into the lower story of thai. Let tbe reader
imagine a dre plug at each end of the alley, and
in ton minutel from tht timt the tltrra of fire
was mado, hose would have been attached to each,
and two streams of water would have been flow
ing. Besides, two lines of hoae would havo been
brought acroaa the lota from Front and Second
streets. By such an arrangement Are in an ordi
nary sised building would be drowned out in
twenty minutel after tbo hoae would be put in
operation. Ri-ader, recollect that should our
water works ba put in operation, it will not take
half an hour to lira up an engiue befure water
could be thrown on a .Ire. Not only it tht cost
tnd diday of an engint di.ponted with, but from
the Immense full, 176 feet, nature il substituted
and water forced over tht highest building in
town, and so powerful would be the stream that
it would knock n man off the Court House roof,
should it strike him. Hundreds of towns which
haroertctad wator worka, are compelled to pay from
17,000 to 110,000 for engines, in addition to the
cost of water works, before tho water ctn be made
available in case of firo, from the fact that they
cannot obtain fall or head enough to raise the wa
ter even to the pavements. With us It would be
far different. Just as soon as the hose would bt
attached to tbo fire plug, water would begin to
dow and with a force far exceeding that of an
engine.
