Mr, Wollaoe aa a Railroad Man.
Such is tho caption of an article re
lating to Sooalor Wnllaco'a lute rail
road spooth, which wo find in the
.Pittsburgh Telegraph, (U. S. District
Attorney Swoopo'd paper,) of the 22d
of August. Tbo editor remarks ;
"We hive a copy of a characteris
tically clo.tr and pointed speech deliv
ered by Hon. illiam A. Wallaco, of
this Suto, Vlco-Prosidont of the Texas
nnd raciflo Railway, at the colobra
tion of tho opening of tho lino botweoo
Dallas and Shroveporl, on the 13th of
Angust. Jur. Wallaco says in loss than
ton months tho Texas and Pacific
Company has graded and bridged
nearly 400 miles of railway, havo laid
tho track, built tho machine, shops,
and fully equipped with engines and
other rolling stock, nearly ono-half
tuorcot, novo tho iron ana tics apon
the ground to comploto the whole be
fore the 1st of December, 1873, and
hrtvo changod tho gange and fully
equipped an old line of sixty-six miles,
so that by that dato thoy will have in
full operation ooarly fivo hundrod miles
of railway within tho State of Texas.
In doing this they have oxponded
about 810,000,000, and noithor bond
nor mortgage to the extent of one
dollar has been executed for this pur
potto. The Texas road to tho Pacific,
Mr. Wallaco claims, will be six hun
dred miles shorter than any of its ri
vals, from ocean to ocean, while the
case and cboapness of water transpor
tation from points on Its line to the
.Mississippi will onablo ores and other
heavy articles to reach the northern
cities at cheaper rates than by any
other routo. By the completion of
tuo jenorson division ot the road com
munication botweon Galveston and St.
Louis will bo made one hundred and
fifty miles shorter than by any exint
ing lino, and the pcoplo of tho wholo
of Texas will thereby have a speedy
and short line north. Wo quote this
extract trom tbo conclusion ot Air.
allaco's speech. It will be scon Iio
talks sound sense to the Tcxans."
Hore the editor quotes aa extract
from Jlr. Wallaco's speech, which will
be found in full on our first pago, and
wo doom it unnocossary to give the
extract alluded to.
Its Definition.
lion. William AUon, the Domocratio
noinineo for Governor of Ohio, in a
late speech gave the follwing rather
lengthy but excellent definition of
Democracy. II o says:
"Democracy is a sontimont not to
do appalled, corrupted or compromised.
It knows no basoness ; it eowers at no
danger; it oppresses no weakness.
Fearless, generous and humane, it re
bukes tho arrogant, chorishos honor,
and sympathizes with Iho humblo. it
aek nutting but what it concedes; it
concedes noiutng but what it demands
.I'eairucuve oniy oi aospoiism, ll IB
the sole conservator of liberty, labor
and property. It is the sentiment of
freedom, of equal rights, of equal obli
gations, it is the law ot nature per
vnding tho law of the land. The
stupid, the selfish and the base in
spirit may dononnce it as a vulgar
thing ; but in tbo hiBtory of our race
tho Domocratio principlo has devel
oped and illustrated tho highosl moral
and intolloctnal attributes of our na
ture. Yes that is a noblo, magnani
mous, a Bnblime sontimont. which ex
pands our affections, enlarges the cir
cles of our sympathies, and elevates
me soul ol man, until, claiming an
equality with tho best, ho rcjocte, as
unworthy of bis dignity, and political
immunities over tho humblest of his
fellows. Yos it is an onnoblintrnrin-
ciplo and may that spirit which ani-
mutca our Jatborsin the revolutionary
contest lor its establishment continue
to animate us, their sons, in the im
ponding struggle lor its preservation."
Undor a shod in Harrisburg, To.,
enysaxew lorn corresponuopt, there
stands a wagon loaded with pine
boards. It is partial wreck, for
luoso boards wore loaded on ono day
in 1812. The shed, too, is loitering
with ago and docay. To see that this
ancient load of lumber romuins undis
turbed, in obodionco of a solomn vow
mudobyaman named IJaily, seems
to bo what Buily has livod to tho age
of ninety-cifht years for. lie was
"cut out" in the affections of a young
lady. Tho climax camo whon he
returned from Philadelphia one day,
sixty-ono years ago, with this Inmbcr,
which was to finish a houso ho was
building for himself. JIo found that
the girl bad married his rival. Ho
married another woman, who diod
about six years ago t but ho would
novor let that load of lumber be die
turhed.

quizzical way, (shook his head and re

"I had more money than bo had to
