With and Without Coal. Tlio anthracite coal of Pennsylvania is situated principally in tlio four counties of Dauphin, Schuylkill, Car bon and Luzerne, with email quanti ties in Northumberland and Columbia counties, and semi-anthracite In Sulli van and Wyoming. Of the sixty-six counties the following twonty-tivo con tain no coal of any description Phil adelphia, Dolowo.ro, Chester, Mont gomery, Bucks, Northampton, Lehigh iierks, Lebanon, Lancaster, York, Adams, Franklin, Cumberland, Milllin, Juniata, Perry, Snydor, Union, Mon tour, Monroo, Pike, Wayne, Susque hanna and Erie. They are all situat ed in tho southeastern part of the Stato, except Erie, which is in the " northeastern corner, Six counties contain dotacliod fields of somi-bitnm- "inoue coal, Bradford, Lycoming, Tio ga, Huntingdon, Bedford aud Fulton. The following twenty-seven counties in tho woslern and northwestern part of tho state eon tain bituminous coal, a portion of which, along the eastern margin of the field, is somi-bituminous, vis: Somerset, Fayotto, Groono, Wash ington, Westmoreland, Cambria, Indi ana, Armstrong, Allegheny, Beaver, Lawrence, Butler, Clarion, Jefferson, Clearfiold, Blair, Centre, Clinton, Cam eron, Elk, Forest, Venango, Morcor, Crawford, Warren, M'Kenn and Pot ter, or in all forty-one coal producing Counties. Of so fast a coul region, with a very intricate structuro, only a goncrul account can be given. Its total area is 12,222 square miles, bo sides eighty miles in Broad Ton, and 472 in tho anthracite- fields, making a total of 12,774 squaro miles of coal of all kinds in Pennsylvania. Capital Punishment. Tlio recent hangings in vnrious places tin vo given something of an impetus to tho discussion of the mode of taking tho lifo of a criminal. The ancient modo of hanging is voted bar barous on all hands, aud that some quicker and easier modo of tuking life should bo adopted. One suggests the garroto, another tho gnillotino, nnd now the Minneapolis (Minn.) Tribune proposes that poison or something elso cqunliy qulot bo substituted for as phy xiu.and that every State havo a sur-geon-gonoritl to superviso the taking of lifo according to law, who shall pre scribe the sort of poison and tho best method of administering it. "It is not certain," adds the Tribune, "but electricity would bo quicker nnd bet ter. Hogs are cow killed in Cincin nati with a patent battery. If tho sheriff could walk gently around be hind tho prisoner, quiotly apply the end of the deadly wire and drop him to the earth, liko a pigeon deftly shot on wing, it would seom a liltlo more in nccordanco with civilization." Tho Philadelphia Medical Times makes this suggestion : "Why cannot condomncd criminals spend their last moments in a room in which carbonic acid is generated, by the woll known moans, until lifo is ex tinct? The very silence of tho process would be impressive Tbo murdoror would simply cease to exist among mon, without any opportunity for bra vado, without putting bis powor to endure against a stronger power to torture. Tho law would be vindicat. cd, and the brute courage of tho "gamo" convict would have no chance to infcot bis associates." A New Idea in Building. , . Wiro netting for plastering is being rapidly introduced to take tho place of laths. It takes less labor to place on the walls, is more continuous, and will not burn. Coarso netting, with ono-inch mesh, and made, of strong wire, ia found to answer best. For ornamental cornice work it is cspeci- . ally valuable, for it enn bo bent into any desired form. Secured to iron studding In a brick building, our great est danger on account of firo would be romoved. A still further applica tion of this plan is to make round bags of wire, resembling barrels, and to coat them inside and out with coment. When it hardens they re semble stone barrels. Filled with and nnd sunk in rows and masses, they mnko excollont building material for break-waters. Another oxteamon of tho idea lias been tried with success in England. It consists in making iron framed buildings, coveting them with the wire notling, and spreading concrete on both sides. It is claimed that a houBO walls, floors, roof, doors, partitions and all lias been built, that it is strong, firm, and absolutely incom bustible Various applications of tho uso of wiro netting, and plaster or cement, readily suggest themselves, and tho matter is worthy of the atten tion of mechanics and builders. A horso ran away on Liberty stroet, rriday, and a gnntlomnn -dushed into the road to head it off, but suddenly changed his mind, and dashed back to tho walk aga'm. lie said a man who was in dobt, with no work, could hardly uffwrd to mako himself con spicuous.
