of Pennsylvania, born in Westmore
land county, January 23d, 1781. lie
was seventh in Jinoal descrnt from
Matthew Grant, who emigrated to
this country In 1630, from Devonshire,
Knglund, and settled first at Dorches
ter, Mass., and in 10ii5 removed there
from to Windsor, Conn. Hit crrand-
futhor, Cnpt. Noah Grant, waa a sol
dier In tho "Old French War." and
was killed in tbe battle September
20th, 1750. Ilia father, also named
Noah Grant, served through tbe Itov-
