The grand jury last week returned the pnblio road along Chest creek, from Xewburg to the mouth of the creek, near Mehafry'i store. - There are several other roads la a similar conditio in the county, but we pre sume th attention of the Jurors was not called to thcu. Bad roads are a nuisanco and are as offen sive to th traveling public as a filthy kitchen is to a tidy housekeeper. Corseb Stone Latino. Anting nn dor th advice of tbe grand Jury and th Aol of Aiieiuuiy relating to bridges In this county, tha County Commissioners Lav appropriated 5,000 toward the erection of an Iron brldga across the rlvor at Curwenivlllo, $1,5110 toward the erection of bridge across the rlvor at UcOhee'i Mills, in Hell township, $S00 toward a bridge across the river at Hoyfs Mills, between Penn and Ferguson, and W0 toward a bridge across Anderson creek, in Union township, on th turnpike leading from Cloaraeld to Luthersburg. Aud we understand that tho Board Is ready to appropriate five or all thousand dollars toward lb erection or one or two bridges across the river between Clearfield and the mouth of Monhunuon crock, provided th cltlsens In that section of the oounty make an effort to raise t similar sum for that purpose. That icv eral brldgoi are greatly needed In the locality In dieated no on seems to dispute, but uuless the cltlxeni of Ooshrn, Glrard, Covington and Kar thaui move In the matter, It may be a long time beruro they can wale high water mark by a bridge. The citlscns in the townships named are not the only parties interested, but thoss In Bradford, Uraham and Morris arc equally so, anil If a lolut effort Is made on both sides of th rlvor to get .tlfiartrlntlnn a , t.i, . ... . r. w u, two unugci win n thrown acron th river by the time another year passes arounti. UI """go ftcross the rlvor at or near 8haws. villo, and another at Raid Hills or Snndv. andth whole lower end of the county would be aeeom modated. As It Is, persons are ofton compelled u travel and driv their teams ten, twenty, and even thirty mile to get to the railroad, when half Ih distance will tako them there If tho bridge lnji cited aro erected. It is therefore highly nccessa ry for the cititens In the lowerend to more Ifthey want bridges, because, If they dou't, tha upper win nulla lull a doicn bridges In the next year, and use np the funds. ' a ' - .. - .nuuuT r UNERAL lUTl'S. It ia evi dont to the most easual observer that lorn of tbe fornii of the present style of funeral rites and procession! an real evils and utterly useless for accomplishing the purposes for which they wero originally intended. Tho person who performs in services at tbe house of the deceased in speak. Ing of the person whose corpse Is before him, fre quently dwells on those Incidents which hare the effect of re-producing In the feelings of the rela Uvea of the deceased all the polgnanjy of the first heart felt grief for the lost one. This should be avoided and word! of sympathising comfort for the mourners should be substituted in their stead. As for funeral processions thcro should be nothing oi tiio kind, and we agree with the Christian Union, which says that after a funeral service at tbehoui tho friends should go away, all but the nearest, and then, or still better, the next morning, the body should be entrusted to the tender care of some three or four tried and trusted friends, not members of the family, and these should bear it to its last roiling place. A parent 'l heart, a hus band's, wife's or ohild's, never ought to besuhjeclcd to the fearful tax of seeing their precious dead lowered into th grave by alien and untender hand, and hoarlng the dreadful thud of the first cloda npon the coffin. It is most cruel and bar barous to subject any near relative or nearest friend to such a test as this. It the whole com pany of relative! aud friends must go to tbe grave side, we must contrive somehow to make the clos ing loene.lcn hard and withering Affooaa Suit. CuAtr'r. ior Honorable Exploits Tho Lcwistown itaioenst, in alluding to local enterprise, saysi Bsllcfonte has to thank ex-Oov. Curtin for suggesting and and bringing to a eon summation the establishment of t car factory in that place. Tho company Is now permanently organised, with Hon. Wm. McCleilan, of Cham bcrsburg, president, and E. M. Blanohard, of llclletonte, treasurer ; and tha erection ot build ings li already contracted for. Thus It Is seen that one public spirited aitlaen, who has extensive acquaintance and influence abroad, can doatown vast deal of good, if he only will make th ef fort; but, alas, there are too many who only think of their own personal aggrandisment, and care ut litlle for th general prosperity. Williams port, Luck Haven and Boiieroot give practical evidence of what a few men, actuated by the right spirit, can do for a town ; while Lcwistown, with greater local advantages than either, lag! far be hind I Never was then ft more favorable period, in the history of our town, for effective action in th direction referred to, (baa sow. Will not com on or other if our wealthy eitiseni arise from his lethargy, and earn th everlasting grati tude of the community, by bringing here men and capital to embark In large enterprises, and thus add substantially to th improvement, enlarge ment aud general prosperity of the town 1 Free Bridges. We are clad to know that tho lot Urand Jury expressed a de cided opinion in relation to thebuildlngof bridges in our eonnty. The policy Inaugurated by the ounly Commissioners, under the special bridge law, passod for this county in 1870,'wai unani mously approved. Besides, the Grand Jury, in their report call upon the Cobn'y Commissioners to enter into negotiations with toll bridge compi les with view to purchasing all tell bridges in th county, just as soon as they bar the funds. and make them FHER BRIDGES. And if anv legislation ia necessary to bring about the result, to obtain it. Th Grand Jury also point to the fact that from Clearfield to Karthaus, ft distance of twenty-fire miles, there li not a single bridge across th river, and desire that the Connty Com missioners InscguraU ft policy which will wipe out bridge toll In this county. The Jury also recommend that hereafter Iron bridge be built, oelierlng them to be the most durable, convenient and in the end th cheapest. It give m pleasure that we are able to coincide 1th the conclusions at which the Jury arrived. Commissioners. In accordance with an Act of Assembly, approved tho lOthdayof .oril, A. D. 1S73, regulating the appointment of Coma' isioner to take charge of and repair tho two public roads loading from ClcarOeld.to Lu thersburg ami to Penfiuld, the Court appointed Martin Kichvls, "f Lawrence township, Henry Whitehead, of Union township, and William F. Johnston, of Huston Jownshlp, laid commission ers, who are to giro bond iti the sum of $5,000, to be approved by tho Court. The gentlemen appointed all taka ft llri'ly In terest in those two roads, and will oS doubt put them In complete repair at an early day. The funds in the treasury to ha applied to those roads amounts to about 11,000, and If work to this amount Is put on the road! during th months of June, July and August, it will put them In com. plet order. This ii tb duty of the gentlemen appointed and it il what thepublic demand. An entertainment will bo rrivon in the Court House, In Clcarfiold, on Thursday and Friday evenings, June 2llh and 27th, by tho stu dents of til Clearfield Academy, uudur the charge of Prof. P. L. Harrison and his worthy assistants. The en tertainments given heretofore hy the pupils of the Academy have met with such general praise that w doubt whether th Court House will accoin- n-.odale all that will be eager to attend on the evenings mentioned.
