Cork ii tlio bark of the evergreon
onk, known us Qutrau tuber. It grows
plentifully in tlio south of Franco, in
parts of Ita'y, in Spain, Portugal and
Algeria. Commerco la indobtod to
Portugal fur Its largest supply, Tbore
the cork tree, mrtjontio in size and rug
ged in eovoring, its branclios sweeping
gracefully ovor tlio flowor-sluddcd
greonsward, and its foliugo of tho
bi igbloBt green, is monarch of tho for
est. . Tho fawn color of tho lossor
limbs and the tawny gray of the body
furnish emphalio and pleasing con
trast to the leaves. Cork oaks form
the royal pnrks, and shado thepiaczas
of paludal mansions. Singlo trees of
gigantic lizo, snored as manorial heir
looms, or from historical associations,
whose brunches through centuries
have been growing gray with moss,
are regarded with almost suporslilious
venoration.
For constructive purposes the wood
of tho cork treo is almost valueless.
It not only decays rnpii'ly, but its sap,
from which no dryness ever quite frees
it. corrodes nails driven into it. Hut
tho vulue of the bark fully compen
sates fur the inferior quality of the
wood. In fact, the bark of the oork
tree, although, like other oaks,
bears acorns, may be regard od as its
fruit. Besidos, in its native state it
every few years sloughs its old cover
ing and takes on a now,

the best condition, and not the shed

the cork treo ono of the most valuable
in the world.
Whon a healthy cork tree bat reach

similar to the former close to the
branches. ' These cuts are followed
by others equally deep, made longitu

broad planks. The tree is then left
The enp has bocn stopped from circa-1

strip is removed by the hand.
This process is repeated every ten

the earliest yield. Evory crop is less
valuaAo than its predecessor. The
best cork is known by its pliancy,
elasticity, absence of porosity, and
depth of Color, and these Colors are
gradually lost by successive yields.
The Spaniards keep their best mate
rial for manufacture at home. Of late
years, Algeria is sending exoeodingly
good cork to market. The ostate
tbore of M. le Doc de Montebello,
ji resented to him by the lato Louis
Napoleon, is covered with cork oak
forests, the yield from which is very
groat and tho itiality unsurpassed.
About six thousand tons of tho raw
matorial corks are annually shipped
from cork producing countries, and
probably an equal quantity isfurniahed
for homo consumption.
What Home Is.
Home Is tho only place in all this
-world whero hoarls are sure oi each
other. It is tho place of confidence,
It is the place where we toar off the
mask of guarded and suspicious cold
noss which the world forces as to wear
in self-defence, and whore we pour out
the unreserved communications of full
and confiding hearts. It is the spot
whore expressions of tenderness gosh
out without any sensation of awk ward,
ncss and without any dread of ridi
cule. Let a man travel where he will,
Lome is tho place to which his hoarl
fetidly returns. Ho is to double all
pleasure there. lie is to divide all
pain. A nappy home is the single
pot of rest which a man has upon
