- Keep Stock Warm. '
Th advice which makea lbs head
tag of this article might almost be
aid to be a stereotyped maxim for
farmers, so frequently does it appear
lu all the papers of tbo country, both
agricultural and those which have an
agricultural column. The philosophy
or the advioe is that stoolc Is much
more comfortable when protected
trom- severe oold, that it takes less
food to kssp there, and that they do
bolter. . . Of oourse it does not im
ply that we should build oar barns so
that tbey can be warmod by fires.
As generally understood by farmers,
it' means battern your stables tight
and keep out all tbe oold.
' Where this is done and no arrange
ment is made for supplying them with
fresh air by ventilation, it is as bad or
worse than allowing them to be ex
posed to considerable cold. We want
to.adviso our1 farmers who koep slock
warm in this way to study physiology
enough to know tbe value of fresh air
to animals as well as men. There is
soarcely a farmer in the country who
keeps bis stock warm who does not
run into a worse extreme by making
them breathe air loaded with effluvia
for hours every day. Observe the
character of tbe air in the etables
when you open the door in the morn
ing, and you will be convinced of it.
We onoe heard a snoop farmer say
that the best plaoe to stable sheep in
winter was in a'dry ten-acre lot, shel
tered from driving winds. Tbe only
advantage In this was that they could
have plenty of fresh, pure air. We
heard another farmer say that, in
wintering twenty steers, he stabled
ten and let ten go to the stack all
winter, and the ten 'outside did tbe
best. It was ensy to see, on examin
ing the stablos, that ten of them had
been deprived of good air, and of
courso this would keep tbem from do
ing well.
It is ' a common remark among
farmers that cattle running out all
winterj if well fod, come out in tbe
spring strong and in bottor condition
to grow than those 'too carefully
housed. This appears to argue against
stabling them at all, but when we look
at tbe matter closely, we find it an
argument in favor of fresh air, clean
liness, and exoroise j and if we take
sufficient pains to supply this condi
tion to our stock that is stabled we
111 then learn the true value of tbo
maxim. "Keep your stock warm."

.'. "Charity for All." ,
i The Harrisburg Telegraph publishes
a pious article, headed "Charity for
All." This ring organ now finds it
very convenient to clamor for oharity
to the convicted sooundrols of the Mo

have been more uncharitable towards
tho late Liberals, when on principle
Ibey bolted from a corrupt party.
"Never lick a man when he Is going
