Next Monday is the day fixed by
Jaw for making the borough and township settle
mcnts. The Auditors most meet on that day, in
order to make the settlement legal, but if nobody
is ready to settle, they can adjourn to the next
week, or next month, or next harvest. Their ad
journment from time to time most be recorded on
their books.
The Fish Question. Elsewlioro
will be found the veto of the Governor, bearing
upon this question. The message eon tains aome
important facts, but in the main is rather captious
for a sage State document. The residents along
thebauki of the Delaware, Juniata and Susqne
banna, especially those on thclatterabop Colum
bia, will not tea thinga through the same glass
bU Excellency viewed them.
New Justices. Those person elect
rod to the office of Justice of the Peace In the tev
,ral boroughs and .townships of Clearfield oounty,
,at the late municipal election, are required under
the Act of Assembly regulating that question, to
.notify.Lhe Prothenotary, Aaron C. Tato, Esq., in
.writing,. irithin thirty days aftor theoleetion, that
they intend to lift their commissions. Those ne
glecting to give this notice will of course not be
.commissioned, and will therefore eause a vacancy
which caonot be filled until next December.
Boggs Township Poverty. We of-
'tea hear people descant about the poor, barren
hills of Boggs. Such are the surface indications
ef a large portion of the township. Hut its real
wealth la just beginning to be developed, and It
i will yet provo to be one of the richest in the
.county. An instance t Mr. Jonas II. Peters in
forms us that ha has delivered at the railroad
2,000 tuns of fire etay during the past year. The
royalty is worth twenty cents per tun. 1 he mining
for this amount of clay docs not extend la area
. over katf an acre, thus making one single acre
worth $000. Beside this, he realiiea 12.24 per
ton for mining and hauling to the railroad. There
Is therefore really a fortune in fifty acres of this
land for its royalty, and another for working It.
Suicide. A boy about 15 years old,
named Kyaer, who had boon living since October
with Mr. Cardon, who resides a short distance
above town, took a notion to hang himself on Fri
day afternoon. Mr. Cardon, npon his return
home in the evening, inquired for the boy, his
wifs replying that she supposed be had gone with
him after dinner. Upon repairing to the barn to
feed bil horses, he found the lad suspended by
rope, one end tied to a beam and the other around
his neck, stiff and cold, lie at once oaioe to town
"in search of the Coroner, but he being absent,
Esquire Howe proceeded to hold an -inquest, which
rendered a verdict In accordance with the above
facts. Mr. Cardon took charge of the body, had
It properly shrouded and coffined and proceoeded
with it to B rook rf lie, where we understand the
boy's parents reside. The boy gave no reason for
this wicked act, and none can be eonjeo tared an
less it was ungovernable temper.
Melancholy Accident. Tho Oaco-
la RtUU, of the 16th, rays : A two year old
child of Stephen A. Kephart, who lives at the
Moibennon Land and Lumber Co. 'a bill mill,
three-quarters of a mile up tho Monhannon rail
road, during the temporary ahst-hc of it mother,
Tuesday evening, 7th Inst., took a ooal oil lamp
which It had gotten hold of in tome way or ol her,
to the fire, turned it upside down, when the oil
running from it ignited and set fire to its oiotblng.
Its screams attracted the noighbors, but all too
late te be of much service. All that remained of
its ektbing when first discovered was a portion of
the band of the dross, charred to a ooal. Ita lit
tle body was shrivelled to a crlnp. As toon as It
ai possible for him to get there, Dr. Dlandy was
Id attendance, but its recovery was beyond the
skill of man. Panaceas were applied to relieve
its agony until It would Mcak Its being out," and
it lingered -until the neat day, whan duath eatne

about onr office, it teems by tho last Journal, has
riled the dignified "cuss" who presides over that
fWurt journal of etiquette. Wa art Innocent,
and would have remained so, had we not noticed
''to everybody" in their last lane. The business
arrangement complained of was not ewryooJjf'i
business. We were the party to apply to under
theeipeumetanoea, In the absence of Mr, Gregory.
We had informed him bat one copy of the pro
eeeaiagj yai.ail that was necessary. This appeal
"to everybody" by a party training "in the ad
uaca line" of etiquette, rather takes us down.
We lurrender.
The editor of the Journnl sari: "We are not
flsying second fiddle to anybody." No, but you
ire played the fool In first rat style, In this In
tone, which to our mind Is far more ridiculous.
And just like other people who are constantly try

firea yourself a first rata notice for an "advance

Great Loss. Tho rise in the river
and Clearfield creek, last wcok, resulted In great
damage to cvery1ody. Not only has a largo quan
tity of lumber gono adrift, but farmers along the
banks of the streams have lost their fences, and
two river bridges, the one at Iloyt's mills and the
new one, erected le tbao two ycari ago, across
the rti at Bloom't and llile's, about midway
between Curwcntville and Lumber City, have
boon swept away.
Later news Is to the effect that the bridge over
the river at McGee'i mill has also been swept
away, and the Curwensville bridge has been very
seriously injured. In fact, every bridge on the
river hat sustalucd injury.
The flood does not teem to have done much In
Jury below, except at Lock Haven. The loe gorge
at one time extended from Linden to Queen's Run
dam, which caused an overflow at the former plaoc,
and with the assistance of Bald Eagle creek
drenohed the lower end of the eity completely.
A goneral lumbermen's mooting was held in this
plaoo on Monday, to take aome action in rotation
to the largo amount of timber now adrift. After
some preliminary proceedings, Messrs. James
Mitchell, E. A. Bigler, John W. Wright, Jr., C.
W. Smith and W. D, Irvln were appointed a com
mittee to proceed along the river, as far as Lock
Haven, and look up and occurs all tho drift lum
ber possible.

A Man on Fire. The Williainsport
uuiitnn eays :
Early Saturday evening, we am Informed, a
man named Sowers, from Newberry, drove up in
front of Mr. Raitvtter's saloon, on Willow street.
Leaving hit horse, he entered the saloon, where,
from the strong smell of kerosene, those present
discovered that his clothes were saturated with
oil. A few momenta after, be stepped to one end
of tho bar, took a match from the safe, and at
be wat about to light his pipe, wat cautioned by
Dr. Gochrig to be careful, as hit clothet might
suddenly take fire. No heed was taken to the ad
vice, and Mr. 8. proceeded to strike the match by
rubbing it upon his pants. No sooner wat it Ig
nited than he wat enveloped in a sheet of flume,
that shot far above bit head. The pipe wat In.
stantly dropped, and at the man moved toward
the door, U was like tho move of a solid volume
of fire, the body of Mr. S. being hardly discerni
ble. When he arrived opposite the centre of tho
bar, he tore off bit coat by a sudden jerk, and
threw It upon tho floor. Then ft an tie and wild
he rushed from the saloon Into tho vacant lot on
the Market street tide, plunging Into a snow bauk,
where laid upon bit side. By this time n gentle
man who waa In the saloon at the time of the oe
ourrcneo, seised him and hold him firmly on tho
snow, whilst another threw over him a eoat to
smother the flames. Upon removing tuo eoat, It
wat ascertained that the pants were burned off,
but the lining wat still there, the oil not having
nenntratad lw"'l .IW TkU 4i.tU
savod his life. Tho lining was ttill on firo, and
at they were again about to wrap falui, he made a
disparate attempt to escape, and It was only by
force of lu u sole that he wis held until the fire wat
entirely extinguished. Had be at that time es
caped from the clutches of those who were strug
gling to tare his life, he would surely have been
burned to death. We are told that hit whiskert
and hair were burned off, and hit haudi severely
blistered at the time he threw off bit coat. After
the occurrence be stated that in carrying a can of
oil, he slipped, spilling tho contents of the ean
upon hit clothes. Mr. S. may consider himself a
lucky man, for in nine cases out uf ten, under
similar circumstances, death It tho inevitable re
sult. At to the full extent of lujurlo in this case
we have no direct information. People are toe
careless in the handling of this dangnrout fluid,
and the only won dor it that more aooldrntt do ut
eoour.
Entertainment. The pupil of
