Ou Griat Wealth. The minora! I
wealth of our oounty until lately has attracted but
very little fttteuttun, llhar at honuf or aim mi. 1
Lumber I latnbor! has been our stock In trad;
which when properly viewed Is really Insignia .
cant when compared with tho Coal, Iron, Fire
Clay and other mineral deposits that fill our hills.
Soinubody 3wi been posting tho editor of the
Clinton JJtmoeml on the great wealth of Keating
township, In thai oounty. This township adjoins
Kartbaus, in this county, and (ho following de
scription being correct of tho wealth of tho former,
tbero oan bo so doubt of tho wealth of the latter.
Tbo editor in question says i "There is now and
has been for eotuo time norm or leu speculation
going on with tbo lauds of JUntiug towiibhip,
pieoe of this county, 40 miles distant from Lock
Haven, and lying along the Sufiui'hajmaand the
P. k . Hit., bordered by Camaron, Cloarfluld and
Centre counties; tfhf rcsaon; for tbisj activity In
those wild and apparently unproductive lauds
(saving of timber) is, wo think, to bo found In the
known miwrul wonlth of the township and tho
belief that, at no very dintnnt day, ono railroad
or another (other than the P. A E.) will fiud Its
way to and through there, and, between tho two
lines, secure reliable and cheap transportation,;
which is all that Is needed to develop the hitherto
well known but unproductive wealth in coal that
lies hid In tho mountains that run through tbo
township. Whethor the parties speculating have
reliable information of tho coming of another
railroad, or whether they aro taking chances on
the 'manifest dostlny' prinoiple, we do out know.
But what wo have reason to think we do know Is,
that Keating township has a groat deal uf goud
coal in it, and to that point we propose to speak.
Our informant Is an intelligent citiscn of Clinton,
who has resided in the county sineo its organisa
tion, and what be says is from actual or parsons!
investigation on the ground. Uis examinations
wero not ouuipleto or thorough, excepting to a
limited extent, but they show tho value of the de
posits ho discovered, and point out tho character
of the mineral wealth of that section, which is
deserving of the most considerate attention from
Railroad men and enterprising men of wealth
seeking to develop tho country and secure largo
returns for their investments. Ths opening of
tbo Buffalo route through to Emporium, only lb
miles distant, is another avenue of trade that
tends to glvo greater Importance to these deposits,
and, U may be, imparted some er all of that acti
vity above spoken of,
WHAT OCR INFORMANT SAW.
With a pick and shovel he went over ground in
1SG5, and at a point eight miles above Keating
Station on the P. k E. RR., he dlsoovored U
worhahU veins coal, (a diagram of wbieh ho
made, and it is now before us,) the first of which
or top toUi is four feet two inches thick; tho sec
ond vein four feet seven inches ( third vein six
thick. This rein, he ssys, has been tested,
sad reported as first-rats gas coal ; tho fourth vein
three feet thick) the fifth, three feet nlno inches
thick; the sixth, five fcot thick. Between the
third and fourth veins be found fire-brick clay
from tbroo to five feet thick, Iron or throe feet,
and limestone three fict thick. In excavating
these roins mil increased In thickness the further
in ho went, lie alio reports the discovory of
th re different qualities of Iron ore, one of which
is called 'bog' ore, and exists in very large quan
tities.
"Ten miles aboro the point of these deposits Is
tbo Karthaus furnace, worked so far bock as 1832,
bat discontinued (for want of transportation, says
our informant) In 1830, and when in operation
the ore wrs got from a drift that run under the
above-named six-foot ooal vein, and the limestone
came front the same drift. It was believed that
tbo canal would run to this point, and wheu it was
fixed that It would not, the making of iron was dis
continued, and to this day a largo ainouut of oro
lies thoro wbioh was intended to bo nscd in tbo
furnace.
A charter for the Kartbaus Coal, Iron and
Railroad Company has been obtained within the
past six or eight years, and is now hold by citi
sens of Clearfield and Cliuton, with right of way
through these counties to adjoining counties, but
we believe nothing has been done towards the con
struction of ths road.
"For tho purpose of calling attention to this one
of the valauble resources of Clinton, we have laid
these faots before our readers, and If there be any
one who con throw further light upon the subject,
or convey information f any other valuable re
sources uf the county, wo wilt bo much pleased
to receive and give them publicity through the
columns of tbo Dtmocrat."
