CLEARFIELD, PA. ; ,

Western Union Telegraph Company.
The annual oloclion of a board of
directors for this company came off iu
Sow York ono day rocenlly. Few
people comprehend the workings of
tho Wontorn Union Company. Tbe
Herald say.: "When the election of
directors was completed and the ro
siilt announced the Socrotary presont
. d a roport for the past roar. It waa
very elaborate and embraced all the
details 'and all tho workings of the
company. It comprised a resume of
the operations of the com puny for the
fiscal year ondinff Jane 30,1872. It
oponod with a presentation of tbo
state of affaire at the time ol the hint
report at tho beginning of July, 1809.
Till COMPANY'S AEJA1H8.
.At that lime 66,032 miles of Hue
wero boing onorated, which made an
aggregate of 121,151,000 miles of wire
under the control of tbe company.
Under its snpervision and direct mau
rement were 4,000 telegraph ofllces,
all of which possessed an exclusive
operator. In Juno, 167'J, tho tima up
to which the present report closes,
02,032 miles of lino and 137,1DO,000 of
wire wcro nndcr tuo control or the
company, employing 6,237 offices, in
nil of which there was an operator.
This showed an incieaso during the
year of 6,000 miles of line' and 10,039
nilcs of wire, besides which 037 offices
were created in various parts of tbo
country, in addition to those which
had heretofore existed. On June 80,
1872, 8,347 porsons wore in tho em
ploy of the Westorn Union Telegraph
Company. The messages sent over
tho linos of tho company during the
j-car n um bored in all 12,442,440, which
it had been found was an increase on
the previous year of 1,798,422 mes
sages sont over the wires of the com
pany. During tho year the gross re
ceipts of tho company amounted to
88,457,095 77, counterbalanced in part
by expeusos which added up to 85,
000,803.10. This exhibited a net profit
of $2,790,232.61, an increase during
the year of 8819,640 92 in gross re
ceipts, $502,075.07 In expenses and
$257,570.95 in net profits. Tbe re
port here expatiated on the encour
aging incrcaso in the affairs of tbe
icompnny, and then returned to figures.
TUB PROFITS.
For the past six years the net profit
accruing to tho company has boen
$17,110,094 83 above all expenses. Of
this sum 84,850,879.34 has been dis
tributed in dividends, and $1,898,401.
98 lias boen distributed in paying in
tore, on tho Western Union Com-
imny's bonds, and $10,301,412.91 has
teen expended in construction and
maintenance of new lines and in tbe
purchase of telegraph patents, ic.
Xhen followed the exhibition of sev
eral minor matters, and also of the
new duplex tolograph. It eooms that
this new invention, which has been
placed in almost gcnoral use npon the
Western Union Telegraph wires, has
the advantage of being able to send
messages both ways and at the same
limn op.. wire, thus nnvinfr
both time and expouso. This advan
tage is self-apparent compared with
the old plan of sending messages fcr
.one wire, which could only transmit
iliom in. one direction.
The report concluded with a gen
eral rofcrence to the favorable aspect
of uffuirs regarding the company's
tusinoss. It was ordorod to be print
ed and to be distributed when ready.
Hints on Shopping,
It is poor economy or, rath or, no
economy at all to purchase inferior
fabrics because they are cheap. Per
sons in limited circumstances often
commit this error. Jf a calico at too
.cents a yard looks about as well as
one at twelve or flfleon cents, the pru
dent purchaser will often think it
economy to chooso tho ' low-priced
good. As it is low-priced, she may
iii'Julgo in a yard or two more for
ruflloa or bias folds, fluttering horsolf
Hint cheap ornamentation is an equiv
alent for fine quality. This mistake
rouy bo soon permeating the entire
wardrobe of many sensible people.
The result Is simply this : they nover
ihave anything of really good quality,
ore always shabby, and always buy
ing. None but rich people can afford
to buy poor goods. This rule applies
to all aorta of goods muslins, cloths,
carpets ad table linen. We grudge
tbe time we see women spend in mak
ing up muslins of low grade for un
derclothing. There aro so many
stitches in a shirt 1 And when it lasts
one year instead of two, as It should,
.there is just twice ns much work dono
-as need to be. Hotter make three
shirts of fine quality muslin than six
of a lower grade of muslin. Just so in
flannels. A fifty-cont, till wool Shaker
flannol will wear two or throe limes
jm long as your flimsy cotton and wool
stuff a few pennies cboapor. Ktpooi.
ftlly In a family of children, fabrics
should be choson for servico, that whon
msdo up they may descond from one
child to another, thus saving the moth
er time to stitch into lior 'brain a liv
tlo embroidery of thought and culture.
A few rules with regard to shopping
iUolf may bo In pinto. First: Ilave a
list of articles to ho purchased made
out In black and whlto. By this
moans you will be saved from sudden
temptation to buy what is not really
necessary, and forgot nothing that
you require. Second : Doal only with
morchanla in whose business integrity
you can confide. Third i In the long
run one alway docs better to buy at
one and the same place than run about
ior.tlie purpose of hunting up bargains.
A regular customer can often got
favors doniod to an occasional pur
chaser. Fourth : Never buy what
you don't want, simply because it is
tbenp.
Alas for the glamour of the "Arabi
an Nigh,'' Entertainments 1" a rail
way is proposod from the Mediterra
nean to Ilagdad. The locomolivo will
soon be pulling over the land of the
Saraccna and the Crusaders, providod
capitalists are induced to repose suf
ficient confidence in Bagdad railroad
aeeurities. Jerusalem will probably
be a way station, and it may bo neces
sary to cut through the Mount of Ol
ives and fill in the Valley of Jehosa.
