A lead pencil it In itiolf a imitll
affair, but, considered as a mauufac
lured product, it riitci into mucli im
portnnoo. ToBtartafirat-clnasfuotory
with improved mclilnory and Hook
of well-ioaionod wood, requires a capi
tal of about 1100,000; tho ground
covered i about balf an acre, chiefly
occupied by drying-liontei for the
aturnge of red ecdur. The Fbrida rod
codar la mostly titod in Oils country
and in Europe j noma "iben" wood, an
the Germuna call it, or Knglinii yew,
ia used in Germany;' white pine ia
occasionally uned for a common grade
of oarponler'a pencil.
Tho "load" of the pencil i the well
known graphite or plumbago; tho best
of this is the natural, found in a pure
tate in mnsaca largo enough to cut
into strips. Of this there it) but one
mine now np to the stnndurd, which
ia in Asiulio Siberia, and poncila mado
from this graphiio are ull ono grade,
and pay hero SO cents por gross spe
cial, and 80 por ocut. ad valorem duty.
The Cumberland mines in I'nglund
were tho first discovered, but aro now
almost exhuunod. What was form
erly refuse in cutting tho graphite is
now ground, cleaned and refined, and
then mixed with a fl no clay.
In mixing tho clay and graphite,
great care must be taken in selecting
And cleaning the clay and getting the
proper proportions ; the mixture, with
water, slier being woll kneaded, is
placed In a large receiver and strongly
compressed and forced out through a
small groove at tho bottom, in tho
ebnpo of a thread of the thickness and
elyle required cithersquare, octagon,
or round. This thread, or lead wire,
is cut in bars of the proper length
(done by little girls ), and then straight
ened, dried at a moderate heat, and
packed in air-tight crucibles and placod
in the furnaces; tho grade of the lead
depends upon the umount of heat it is
exposed to, tho amount of clay used
iritmixititf, and tho quality of tho plum
bago. The coloring of the lead it by
various pigments.
The wood, after being thoroughly
seasoned, is cut into thin strips and
dried again ; then cut into strips pen
cil length. These ttrips are grooved
by machinery, then curried on a belt
to the glueing room, whero the lead
is glued in the groovo, and then the
other half of the pencil glued on. Af
ter being dried under pressure, they
re sent to lite turning room and
rounded, squared, or mudo octagon,
by a very ingenious little machine,
which pasne them through three sets
of culleis and drops them ready for
polishing or coloring. The former is
done on Jul lis by boys, and the latter
by a machine, which holds tho brurb
and turns the pencils fed to ii through
hopper. After the pencil is polished,
it it cut the exact length by a circular
saw and tbeend is cut smooth by adrop
knife, the pencil resting on an iron
bed.
The stamping is done by a hollow die,
which is heated ; tho gold or silver
foil is then luid on tho pencil, which
jests in an iron bed, and the die is
thon pressed on it by a screw lever.
The pencils aro then ready to go to
the packing room, whence they find
their way to all parts of the civil
sued world, at prices ranging from two
dollars to twenty dollars por gross.

Do Little Twnos Well. Let me
(hank you, my friend, for teaching me
the necessity of doing little things
veil; taking as much pains with them
as with those we call great things.
This lesson I have been all my life in
need of learning and I don't know,
oven now, ihul 1 have learned it; but
I think I am making approaches to it,
Lilllo things (or those I have called
such) are becoming much more Im
portant in my eyca I toe bow tho
whole fails, if the parte are imperfect
ly dono. This is the great beauty and
glory of naturo't works. Each sepa
rate littlo part Is fi niched so perfectly
and put in just the place to niuko the
grand whole harmonious. I was
thinking of this a fow days ago as I
stood on a high hill, looking across
the hike. The ins and nuts, tho curves
and graceful lines, tho hills and val
leys, which combine to mako up this
beautiful spot, how God must have
had one great plan for hit whole
.world, and then little plarsall through
'It, to mako these pleasant places for
men and cattle, little birds, and every
living thing.
How to Bahrkl Wintka Apples.
The Yankees always barrel their ap
ples for tho market, and sell them in
this way to most advantage, through
out the Fall and Winter. The secret
rf having them keep and carry well
'is to pack thorn light. The N. Y.
Agriculturint lulls how to do this:
"Clean new barrels should be provid
ed. When one is about balf-full,shnke
tho barrel gently, in order to settle
.tho fruit; repeat this when the bar
rel is full, and then a layer on the top
ao that the applet will bo at loast one
inch above the chine. The head it
Ibon pot In position, and pressed down
by muans or a lover. Applet packed
w this way can be carried a long dis
tance without dangor of bruising. Do
nol put any poor fruit with the first
quality, as it will eeriounly afTeot the
price. After the fruit is all barrelled
it should be stored In a cool plaoe.
