THE REPUBLICAN. CLKARF1ELP, T. , ' WRDNESDAY MORNING, OCT. IS. lT. A Pneumatio Tube. After rencatod experiment?, Mr. Albert Brittbuno, somo inonlln ngo, claimed thntjio could transmit pnuk ogos through a tubo of any lor.gih by hollow nphcro travollln;; In tlio libo, imply by oxlmuBling ono aix-hun-drolh part of tho ntnio8ilii'i'9 iu llie tube, thus creating a vucuum which would causo the atmimphorio pressure at tho other ond to drlva tho hollow phere through tho tube with a light ning rapidity. ' Upon an exhibition of. his euloula tions and experiment t.6 tho Moose Commlttoo on Appropriations, Con gress, at its last eosolon, appropriated $15,000 tocoimtruct a pneumiitio tubo of Mr. B.'b invention from the Capitol to the Government printing oftico, the work to be done under tho super vision of Mr. Edward Clink, architect of the Capitol. In accordance there with Mr. Clurk has entered into con tract with Mr. Brinbnno for tho con struction of the tube between tho buildings nhove named, by way of North Capitol stroot, Briobuno to furnish all machinery, material and labor nocossary for its construction, and the proper working of it. Tho tubo ts to bo at loast two feet in di ameter (inner mop.iircmonlj, to oe laid under ground, and constructed of planks treat od in boiling coal tar, or some equivalent method, to insure durability, and hooped with iron and screw-clumps. Air. Brisbane is to placo in a proper condition the streets through which tho tubo is to pass, and to supply all necessary machinery. The tube, as above described, will have a hollow sphere ot two feet di ameter fitted therein, tho inventor claiming that by UBing a sphoro in stead of a railway carriage he avoids the loss by friction and increase- the power, lie then pu:s no ixhausting ian in the Capitol and anothor in tho printing office, and packages to be conveyed ore placed in the hollow sphere; tho air is thin exhau tel ly the fan at the other end of tho tuoc, and he claims, as above stuted, that as soon as one six-hundrodth of it is out the atmospheric pressure at tho .other end will drive tho bull and con tents through tho tubo. ' Jdr. Brisbane is now in New York, to prepare the tube and machinery, and when it is once hero but a short time will bo required to put it in po sition. Washington JiqiMican. A Beautiful Incident. A young man recently run away from the gnllcys of Toulouse, lie was strong and vigorous, and arrived next rooming before a cottage, and stopped to get something to eat, nnd get a ref uge while he reposed a little. But he found the inmates of the oottago in the greatest distress. Four little children sut trembling in the corner tho moth er sat weeping and toaring her hair, and the father was walking tho floor in such agony. "..-. ...,!!., ... gllllUY OiaVU HBHtHI IIWII MO the matter, and tho father replied that they were tlmt morning turned out of doors, because they could not pay their rent. "You sco mcdrivon to despair," suid the father, "my wifo and little ono -deprived of food and Bheltcr, nnd I without moans to provide for them." Tho convict listened to the tale with tears of sympathy, nnd said : "I will give you tho means, I have just escaped from the galleys. Who ever brings back an escaped prisoner is entitled to a reward of fifty francs. How much docs the rent amount to?" "Forty francs," answorod tho fu thor. "My children should starve beforo I would do so base a thing." The gonerous man insintod, and do--clarcd that he would go and give him self up if the father would not take him. The lnttor yielded, and taking his presorvor by tho arm, led him to the city, and to the Mayor's office Evorybody was surprised to see that A little man had boon ablo to capture tuch a strong young fellow. The fifty francs wero paid, and the prisoner soot bnck to tlio galleys j but lifter he was gone tho father nuked s private interview with tho Mayor, to whom be told the story. Tho Mayor was so much affected that ho not only Added francs to the futhcr's purse, tut wrote immediately to tho Minis tor of Justice, begging tho noblo pris oner's release. The Minister examin ed into the affair, and finding it was a comparatively small offenco which condomnod the young man to the gal leys, and that ho had already served out half of his terra, ordcrod his re lease. A countryman observed a gang of darkies laboring in the streots, each wearing a hull and chain. He akd ono why the ball was chained to his leg. "To keep pooplo from stealing it," said the darkey ; "heap of tbloves about here."
