Tbe peculiar circumstance! surrounding the
slckuess and death of this young lady, and the
man) estimable trait of character sbe possessed,
entitle ber to more than a nuting notioe. The
writer of those lines knew ber from childhood,
and being many years her senior, bad frequent up-
Kortunitics to observe her many excellent qualities
oth of uiud aad of heart. She was youug, beau
tiful aud Intelligent, and when In boalih, her
amiable dipposition, evenness of temper and kind
ness of heart endeared her to all wbo knew ber.
Hbe drew around her, by the power of love, scores
of friends, both young and old, whose saddened
looks and tearful eyes, as they gaind upon tier lor
the last time, told in language plainer than words
that not only was her lauiily bereaved, but that
they, too, had sustained an Irreparable loss.
8 he bad boon long confined to her room before
ber death, a helplei suffvrer, and yet she was pa
tient, thoughtful aud resigned. Mot a murmur or
complaint ever escaped ber lins. The sutne love
ly traits of character developed In ber life, shone
out with increased lustre In her sickness. There
were many reason why she might have desired to
live. Her home, her position, her youth, ber cir
cumstances were all calculated to endear her to
life, and yet she could continually say, "I am
ready to die I am not afraid of death." he
seemed to have been ad moo in hod of her aiinroaoh-
ing dissolution long before her friends were alarm
ed about her recovery. In view of It, she busied
berself in her preparation. Her iiible, which had
been her dally companion for yoars, shows by her
notes upon it how close a student of it she had
been, iler selections in it were of the most eom
fortiog and cheering character to tbe dying chris
tian, and pointed with unerring certainty to the
death she died and the heaven she obtained. Her
Prayer Book lay upon her bed, and occupied every
spare moment. Bno freely talked of tier death,
and gave tbe most comforting assurances to those
around her of her hope in Christ. Shewasatruly
pious, christian young lady, and from tbe day of
ner confirmation in ino r.piscopaJ cnuren until ine
time of ner ditn, she never neglected a ouriitian
duty.
Hur death was as peaceful as It was beautiful.
For several days she rested eouifortablr, and en
joyed during the nights almost undisturbed sleep,
On the night sne tiled, sne slept caiiniy nniu anoui
1 o clock, when ner fat ner was called to watch by
her, and she again fell into a peaceful slumber,
only to awake to a brighter life. For three boars
she slept on, and without a itrugls, or moan.
heavy breath, her spirit took its flight, tihe went
to sleep in dt ath. Ho peaceful and silent was th
parting, that sbe disturbed not ber father, who
watched by tbo side of his dying child, and he
knew It not, until the shadow fell and death had
sealed her for his own. And thus she died
"As fedos a summer cloud away,
As sinks the gale when storms are o'er,
As gently shuts tbe eye of day,
Ai dies a wave along tbe shore. , .
