A Lamentabli Fact. The Haiti
more Gazette, in an article reviewing
tbo events of the past yonr, notes tlio
following significant ftiot, which should
be well ooneidored by Kopublicnns as
well as Democrats, for it is nbtolutely
certain that whon tbe downfall oi lib
erty in Ibis country is comploto, nil
will alike feol tbo tbe chains of dospot
ism !
It behooves ns, nevertheless,' to
fully understand that we are farther
to-duy from tbe old landmarks of tho
Constitution : more accustomed to tin
rebukod violations of law, tbo oxor
cise of arbitrary power, and tbo degra
dation of publio morals and political
honesty, than we were twelve inoutbs
ago. The docadanco has beon steady
and nnchocked, and all tbe guards that
wore framed to protoot our liberties
In the bettor days of the itepublic,
with prido in thoir strength to resist
tyrannical power, and with confidence
in thoir ability to repel the storms of
political passions, aro being gradually
broken-down.
Local Taxes. The Age, of Phila
delphia, bewails the condition of tbo
inhabitants of the City of firothorly
Love, as follows :
"The city debt from $10,000,000
mounted to 825,000,000, tbon 830,000,.
000, then 840,000,000, and now it oven
reaches 850,000,000, and sits like an
ill-omened bird npon all the interests
of the city. With the increase of dobt
came the increase of taxation. Start
ing at one dollar and fifty conts on tho
liundrod, it has now reached two dol
lars on the samo amount, which, when
the difference in tho rate of assessment
is taken into consideration, amounts,
in fact, to six dollars on tbe hundrod.
This is a fearful leap in ten yours. A
property which in 1661 paid 8000 tax
ation, is now cnllod upon to pay 82,400.
This is a most enormous taxation for
local purposes. JS'o such burdcus are
borne oy the pooplo of nny city in tho
Union.
Tn Wa8iiinotons. Our second
Washington, Mr. Grant, might poruso
with profit to his morals and dignity,
bnt porhaps at a loss to his cash-box,
tho following remark of tho first, and
we might say of tho only original
Washington, made at the tiino of his
rotiracy from public life :
Tfto oocaslon more lit than the present may ever
occur, pornaps, to asciare, mat nothing but tne
Ttirineiple upon which I set out, and from which I
nave In no instance deported, not to rooeire more
rum the nublie than my expense, hat rostritined
the bounty of several Legislatures at the elose of
tbe war with Ureal Britain from adding ounudor
ably to my peculiar expenses.
Mr. Grant, however, has never been
embarrassed by receiving donations.
He seems to have made it a "princi
ple" never to rofusea gift, and history
will no doubt bear him out in the as
sertion that he "never departed from
it."

Tni President as a Prophet. On
tho 20th of January, 1864, General
