our borough. Mr A H. Shaw has saasW a perenty
aent lease of day and ground wheron-4e ovist
buildings for the man uTac lure of fire elay brick.
Mr. Henry Wile, of Philadelphia, and Mr. 11. A.
Richards, of Pinegrore, Schuylkill county, are
the eutcrfirlirng gentlemen who Lave determined
to lead off. They understand the business, having
been engaged In It for years, aud possess the re.
quired eajiital, out of which they will make a for
tune. Tkey have entered into aoontraet with Mr.
Ale to erect a building 76 by 100 feet, and tatend
to use a siity horse power engine to drive tho ma
obiuery, besides giving employment to a large
number ef laborers, auiqo of whom are already at
work developing the elay, digging, etc. The pro
prietors design to purohase a plot of ground some
where in the vicinity, with a view of erecting
twenty or thirty houses for the benefit of their
employes,
Now, let our oitlscns lend their moral and un
substantial aid to these gentlemen, who eotne
among ui to develops our minerals. Let ui not
hear on every oorncr that "it won't pay they will
break op," etc, but aid and assist them instead.
To our mind our capitalists and bnsinoss men,
when abroad, spend too little time in calling the
attention of foreign capitalists to the many "gold
en placers" located In our county, such as eoal,
fire olay, Iron ore, eto. They either want to keep
it a secret, or do not deem it worth debating with
eapitalists In the east, who are daily looking
around for investments in something of the kind.
We feel like delivering a lecture to onr readers on
this point, and may do so at some future period, if
we ean gather a fow more substantial facts.
But for Mr. haw and Mr, James . Watson, It
is doubtful whether the geatlemco in question
would ever have turned up bera to look aftor eur
lire olay, , Gentlemen, capitalists, dbat aoal and
fire elay, along with timber, when at home or
abroad.
Grumblers at Nkwnpapers. Tho
Bloomsburg Columbian says: "It Is strange how
closely mon road the newspapers. We never say
anything that anybody don't like but we soon
bear of It, aud every ldy is sure to tell us of It
If however once In a while, wo happen to say a
good thing, we never bear of that; nobody seems
to notice that. We pay some man a hundred eom
pllments, and give him a doien puft, and he takes
it all as a tribute to his greatness, and he never
thinks of it ; never thinks it does bim any good.
But if we happen to say things this man don't
like, or something be imagines Is a reflection on
him or his character, see how quickly he flares up
id gets mad about It. All our eei'fs are duly
charged to us, but we no-cr apparently gut any
credit for what 7000! we do.M Such is In part the
life of an editor. His mistakes are charged up
against bim in regular 'ledger form, while his
credit Is withheld, and kiuki and eulTs awarded (
instead in many instances.
Decoration Day. Wo notice by
exchanges that this annual period was pretty gen
erally celebrated. But the day and circumstances
are 10 orerburthenod with etiquette and useless
expenses that at the cluio of the day there seems
to be more jealousy and III feeling than the oppo
site. Ai an illustration, the Belli fonte Watekmar
says ; "Our colored fellow citlsens were very much
mortified at the refusal of tho memlera of the U.
A. It. te allow them to participate In the parade
