Jjwkrxcb, May I'tth, 1S72. Mr. Kniroa. In your issues of April 8d and May 8th tome parson or porions ask an explana tion of the township settlement of 71, which was right and proper. I, fur one, am glad to sea that doctrine about to be re-established. It has been a high crime, for some time past, to criticise the acts of public officials. "Justiee" appears to think that Kvans has been around. Well, It would be almost a uiraeie if Lawrunoe township officials would not steal, with the teaching that the people nare molted for the last ten years. Why, Mr. Ml tor, It has become more eontagious than the 'wall pot. Even religious "Book Concerns" have letne iufeeted with the malady, Now, with the : """I" or the Supervisors hare nothing to say. wuapi they oan explain their doings to tbe t- iMsenoD of "Taxpayer" and the rest of mankind. 1,1 in tvKT& to the Capt. Mrs. Martha Irwin, roliot of Joseph Irwin, late of Lawrvnoe, township, Clearfield county, was oalled from labor to rest on tho evening of May 4th, 1572, In tbe 73d year of her age. Just as the sun shed Us luH lingering ray over the lulls in tbe westorn boil ion, tbe lump of life oeatod to barn, and her spirit took Us flight to tho better landto the rest that is in store for the truly faithful. Bhe was born of christian parents in Half Moon, Centreeounty, Pa.,ln October, 1711. llorparonts, William and Esther Tnte, were among the early pioneers of Clearfield oounty, having sottled very early lo this century on the bunks of tho Sutque hanna, in "Old Town," now Olearfield borough, when tho smoke from the red man's wigwam waa soen to fly upward fresh from the fire that roasted his venison, and when the war whoop of the In dian was heard each morning eeholng o'er hilltop and Talc In January, 1303. on a ootd winter night, whilst tbe father was attending eourt in Centre oounty, their humble dwelling, with all its contents, was eonsumcd by flra, tho family barely escaping with their lives. This perhaps was tho first white man's dwelling ever burned In Clear field oounty. Early in tbe spring of 1808 they with their babes removed to their log cabin, two miles south of ClearflolJ, near the spot where the subjeot of this notice died. There sbo was reared, there sho lived and spent tho balance of a long and ovontful life, (except a fow yean of hor early married life), and there she died. She waa the mother of eight children, all of whom are yet Uvlng. "None knew her but to lovo her." As a wife she was loving, faithful and true; as a mother she was affectionate, dvroted and kind j as a neighbor ibe was always ready, in midnight's darkest boar, to administer to their wants; ea a fricud she was genial, hospitable and true, and as a christian she was consistent, meek and steadfast Bhe took especial delight in reading tbe Bible and bearing Ood's word expounded from the sa orcd desk. For more than thirty years she was a member of tbe Presbyterian church, and lived In the enjoyment of experimental religion and in a full bope of a blissful immortality. Such a life as hers eonld not, in accordance with God's law, but be crowned In the end with a glorious and trium phant victory. During her few days of exceed ingly painful illness, no murmnrings escaped her lips, but often she spoke with great calmness of her departure ; and oonselous till life's latest breath, among her last audible expressions she was heard to any, "the Lord is my shepherd," and thus she passed away. Slay oar end be like hers. Cloarflcld, May 14th. 1S72. a. I. u. Lawrksck, May 18, 1872. Mh. Editor,: In order to appoase the wrath of the tax-paying people of Lawrenoe township, I am oompelled to ask permission, through tho col umns of your valuable paper, to answer an article published in the Rrim'BLica.i, May 8th, 1872, signed "Justice." I have waited patiently for somo one of the Supervisors, Orerseers or Audit ors of Lawrenoe township, who waa better fitted to enlighten "Justioe" in regard to the appro priation of the people's money In our township, but find that so far none have replied, and there fore nndcrtako to explain to the "Aggrieved Tax payers" of Lawrence and to "Justioe" where the $157.40 of the people's money was trannferred to, what become of tbe $30.31 of cash tax, in regard to tbe road which Peter McGeorge got $50 fur and the $15.15 allowed to Captain. 1st. As to the transfer of the $157.40. There were four duplicates out In the township of Law rence.vis; Lanicb's, Brown's, Irwin's and Shaw's. It so happened that a number of the "aggriered taxpayers" of Lawrenoe wore assessed upon two of the duplicates at the sa:uo time, when their names should hare been upon the one, and in making the transfer, so that the tax should be collected but onee off tho "aggrieved," (and in fact somo are aggrieved if they pay once), there was a diminution In the amount of tax assessd upon the fonr duplicate of $157.40. Does that solve that part of the problem satisfactorily to tho "aggriev-1 ed tax paying people' and "Justice" f ! 2d. As regards the $36.31 cash tax, I have this to say, that in the portion of the township under my charge I found the "aggrieved taxpaying peo- pie" poor in purse but rich in bad roads, and lu order to change this sad eon d it ion of affairs I al lowed them to not only work oat their oad tax, but cash tax to the amount of $46,31, and I am satisfied they do not feci "aggrieved," for I know tbe condition of their puree has been Improved, and so have tbe roads, and if necessary I can give tho name of eanh man who worked out bis cash tax, and the amount of each. "Justice," do you wish anything further on that matter f 8d. It ts now necessary to enlighten the "ag grieved" and "Justice" as to the whereabouts of the road that Peter McQcorge received $60 for. I do net know whether "Justioe" has ever been far from home or not ; but If ho will follow me from Clearfield across the barrens to Caladooia, Elk couuty, Pa., I will fihow him tho location of a publie road, which many years ago was regularly laid out, opened and traveled. This road for a number of years has been neglected, and Mr. Mc Ueorge bad an extensive log job aqd necessarily bad to travel and transport all his provisions and supplies over about eight miles of this road, and it being In such a deplorable condition, complain ed to tho Supervisors and threatened to return mem unless iney repaired it. After consulting together, we concluded that It would eost at least $.100 to put the road In repair, and as Mr. Mo- Ueorgo offered to take $60 and repair the road, we accepted his offer, and saved the grumblers of our township at least $250. And now they say we have squandered their money. "Will tho day ever come when grumblers oan find everything that will Just suit their mind V 4lh and lastly. We do not know anything and care less about the $15.15 allowed the Captain, but we have this to say. If we bear anything more about It, either from the "aggrieved taxpaying people" of Lawrence or "Justioe," we will order out the "Ogden Blues," and have the matter settled by a wager of battle. Hoping that I have given a full and sufficient explanation of our acts as public servants in tbe township of Lawrenoe, I remain yours, J. B. Shaw. Accident.- Workmen were ongaged yesterday In putting a scaffolding around one of the eupalos of tho Court House in Look Daren, As 11. L. Dicffenbeeh and (Jeo.
