I reams duwn whioh log oould be lluated, was
worth from fifty ecnU to a dollar a thousand, It
woe then natural and tenslblu to leave in tho
woods all the loga whioh had defect. The butt
which had poly a little almko, hf tons which
would make only coarse boards, and all that had
any knots, wore of oourso left.
Now, the stumpage on streams, which have to
l made drivable at groat expense, sells for from
fiv to tight dollars, aud Judging from the prieeof
boards is worth more. '! Ms mod of tutting
h'f rcwaiHi the mmi, The last lilteea aj1 twenty
yan have increased the valuo of tho piuo trees
tun hundred per tent., hut bare produced no cor
responding eoouotny in saving the timber.
Dut there are some men who stock and saw their
own logs, who In general take the whole tree from
the It iimp to where it will out off ton inches,
leaving to wasto on the ground or for the Ore, only
the btits that are very shaky, tho top logs when
lli knota are rotten or very large, and the knotty
loga which are at least balfrotteu. By cutting the
butt log 12 feet long, and manufacturing it care
fully with a single saw, generally ono-half of the
boards will be the bust in the tree, worth from
thirty to sixty dollars a thousand, aud theotbor
half will be culls, which will pay all the expenses.
It owls but ten dollar! a thousand to take iht log
that ii half rotten from the grouud, when it s In
the way, and put it in seasoned boards on the mill
yard. The sound half of the boards will be worth
twenty dollars a thousand, or more, and ao will
na 4hi whi -a tlv half,
worth from six to twelve dollars a thouxauii t
profit, But, I believ it is not uoual now to haul
a log in lu which any rot ean be discovered. Tho
top log, if the knots are sound and not very large,
will nuke boards worth a auodcrato Itampage,
over and above all tho cost.
The mnriufiicture of lumber hoi ben very prof
itable, but that profit cannot continue after the
lumber is gone, ao it it for the interest of the mill
owner to uuita with the land owner, in framing a
new set of rules, adapted to tho presout price of
iiimncr no a ino present system of waste, j no
movement ought to be general. It will bo dim
cult for ooo man to adopt a rule of economy while
others are continuing in the old way. If tho
Lumber men's Exchaugt-," now in oonUimplatiun,
should be organised, tlfis would be a very proper
subject fur its early consideration. Th land own
ers, mill owner and operating lumbermen on tho
West Branch ought in some way to move in this
matter, for their own interest, and iu jmtico to
their fellow eitisens and to the generations that
are to fallow.
To tho timber lands of Pennsylvania in partic
ular, the principle has great force, that the owner
of property has no moral right-to destroy or waste
it, but should consider rumxcJf only as a trustee
for his race, bound to take the beat enro of It and
manage it in the inont Judicioui manner, applying
it to hit own use only nitb econumv and modera
tion. Ltm.i:Ryjtsv
