- The bnd pre-eminence of ambitious
nd reckless mon, nmbitious of notori
ety, seems almost to shake weak faith
in buninn justice. Thoir success in
evil deeds tempts the doubting almost
to the complaint of the 11 o brow lyrist,
that the clean and conscientious "wash
their bands in rain." Tbo extent af
the influonce of these bnd examples
can scarcely bo overrated. . Hut sno
coss can not be assured even to tbo
audacious in wickedness; and when a
mad and wicked career is cloBed in
violent death, or in living ignominy,
tho better judgment of tbo world as
serts itself. A gross ofTcndor, who,
through lifo defiles censure and buys
flattery, who poisons tho courso of
justice and purchases immunity for
audacious crime, must sooner or lator
-reach "his own place" in tho judg
ment of his survivors. In the case of
James Fink the vordict of tbo world
has been as sudden and universal as
it is storn and just. Prominence
in successful iniquity demanded this
sweeping and equally marked condem
nation. But if we should infer that
his crimes are confined to bis class we
should ignore the fact that the evil
example of him and such as him poisons
all classes of society. FisUs, on a less
showy scale, and oporaling on a smnl
lor circlo, flourish and die, or fudo
away into tbo penitentiary, with only
local fame or the limited eclat of the
police and court reports and ' thoir
rendors.
Now for tbo sptendid hotel "substi
tote the low bar-room ; for tho fasci
nating women of ill-acquired wealth,
the low and faded out-cast; for tbo
kid-gloved murderer, tho rough ir.o
brinte; for tho dashing and wealthy
victim, tho cast-offlovcr of low dogree.
This is a picture in all tbo essential?,
and in all the motives of crime identi
cal wi'.h tho Fisk romanco, but with
out its glamour and hollow splendor.
In nil grades of life, from tho men and
women of gilded sin, who handlo mil
lions, down to tbo besotted wretches
without a spare dollar or a chango of
linen, it is the sumo story. It is only
the colors that vary; tho fascinations
of wealth stolen wealth illuminat
ing tho one class, tho dreary rags and
unvarnished foulness of low-down vico
marking tho other.
And among ull clauses of socioty the
truo origin of these foul deeds is tho
tmmo. Many causes need not -bo speci
fied. Tbo crimes of civilisation are
traceublo usually to ono condition,
whatever soconuary influences may
'have led to that condition. In neirloct
to tho claims of home, in disregard of
its duties una associations, will bo
found the festering causos of crime.
Tho pursuit of illicit gratification, tho
' breaking away from tho loving re
straint of mother, sister or wife, is tho
beginning of a downward courso, the
-end of which is published ovory day
in tho records of juvonilo wrong doing,
and in tbo full dcvclopcmcnt ot his
honor, dishonesty, debauchery and
murder. Great sinners only display
themselves before a widor audioneo.
Moro pcoplo know of thoir downfall,
but tbo fate of tho transgressor is all
the sumo iu the justice of Him who
judges all. .
-The widely known caso of crime
--anditecotrKcqucnccs,whit'h has prompt
ed tlieso remarks, should emphasise
tbo lessons of less notorious cast's of a
liko nature. In almost every man's
sphero of observation, are iuslunces of
departure from the purity which pro
tects the family' circle. "Tho young
man who seeks companionship of a
nature which requires concealment, is
in danger. Tho young woman who
suffers the acquaintance of persons,
whether of her own sox or tho other,
of whom sbo oven distrusts that her
guardians would disapprove, is throw
ing away tho best of her defences.
Vice, open and declared in its own
place, can masquerade amid virtues in
ullraclivo guise. The great weakness
of civilisation is tho perfection of
hypocrisy; evil concealed tinder 6Ucb
.vcjI of .attractiveness, as to give it the
jiowor which an open foe cannot wield.
Whatever political theorists may
say, tho destiny ol tho human raco is
in tho hands of tho women ; mid their
citadel and throne is homo. Kopluco
deserves tbo name of homo whrro wo
man is not seated in her puro and wo
manly character. And wherever wo
man dwells in hor honest and chnsto
relations, she is in advanco of hor
mule companions husbands, brothers,
.children! in wbalsoovor is honest and
. of good report. Let them but follow
her counsels it may bo timid, but
judicious ; let thorn heed her warn
ings, impulsivo perhaps perhaps illog
ical but always having an intuition
of tho right as their foundation, and
they can not greatly wander. Wo
man's character and influence is tho
complement of man's nature. And
whenever man and womnn ngrco in
tho efforts to mako home puro and
hnppy, tho inmates of that household
