Catharine Ludwick Law-head.'
This venerable old lady hrrathl her last st the
residence of her son. In-law, John Uuiich, in this
borough, on the 2d instant, In the 86th year of her
age. Sbe was born In Lancaster eonnty, and many
years ago, with her husband, Nathan, removed to
ibis county, where a very large family connection
:.prang up around them. Her grand children
number 90 and her great-grand children 30. "

.Justice Fhaw, and the jury rendered a rerdiot that
"the deeeaied came to bit death by freeilog.'
Nothing waa found on bit person except hii natu
ralisation paper, dated October 6th, 1868, at M il

Hard to Please. Wo huvo re
peated! heard a few chronic grow.cn eomplain
to the effeot that Conductor Irwin was not as ae
eotnmodating aa some other people. Not knowing
bow it waa ourself, until recently we became sat
isfied on this point. Ueeause, a conductor who
will hold his train while a pafdenger travels forty
rods (and on a dead walk at that) for his overcoat
and to kiss the Laby. Is certainly not chargeable
with being In a hurry or lax in accommodations.
A TnoPEft Ohdinance. Wo call the
: attention of our readers in Ibis borough to the
new ordinance enacted by the Burgess and Town
Council. This enactment effectually closes th
door to all manner of fraud and Iniquitous combi
nations, and places officer and tax payer upon the
plane of the law. We are highly pleased with
this new departure, which must result in Iniprov
ing the morals, business tact and streets of our
borougb. Do not fall to read the ordinance in
another column.
i -
Settle Up. Wo learn from tho
Pbilipsburg Journal that the tax payers of Osceola
are becoming restless. The editor says: "Osooola
has existed as a borough for six yiars, and its
citixeus hare bcoomo weary of waiting for the pub-
' lication of a statement of Dorough Finances, and
Inst week they held an ludignation meeting, ap
pointed a committee to notify the officers of tho
. borough that ' they must settle and publish the
borough finances according to law,' and resolved
that If any officer 'neglects or refuse)' to comply,
he shall be 'prosecuted according to law. "
Fibe. A correspondent informs us
4 bat the fire element produced a Itroly ttme in L,u
thcrsburg on Friday afternoon. At about one
-o'clock the barn of Mr. J. C. Barrett waa found
to be on flro. and was loon entirely consumed. A
horse and set of harneis was all that was sered
The dwelling of Mr. Bcbwrm, Sr., was on fire four
or fire times, but soon put out each time by the
perfect arrangements of the lire department of the
place. The barn of Dr. Ppackinan received
good roasting but did not go oft. The origin of
the fire is onkuown, aud the loss about $300. The
escape from a terrific conflagration was renlly a
miracle.
m
House HirKNED We rocrrct to learn
that the dwelling of (leorge MerriU, residing In
Boggs township, was destroyed by flro on the 5th
instant The dwelling took fire while the parents
( were absent at a fun oral, and of eourse everything
I in the house was consumed. An Insurance policy
f is a good thing to bare on such occasions, yet how
I few persons embrace the prlrHrge of insuring In
'' aoa mil regulated company. Poverty Is no ex
' tcuse tvr not Insuring property. The less a man
? has the mors) prudent be should be. lie might as
;, well refuse to buy bread for bil family as to fail
V to secure It a home.
Frm or Municipal Officers. -Tho
now before the (Legislature, regulating the
feos or daily pay of borough aud township officers
In Clearfield county, fixes the pay f Supervisors,
r Orer score of tho Poor and Auditors at two dollars
1 .per day, aud that of road and bridge viewers at
two dollars and surveyors at four dollars per day,
Aud allows eaeb viewer and surveyor ten cents per
.mile for each mile necessarily traveled from his
residence to tho bridge site, or nearest point of the
road so viewed.
Tho passage of tb is act will obviate the viola-
- lions of the plain letter of the law In the future,
bccfiose the amount fixed Is amply sufficient and
' in harmony with the fees of other officers and tbo
. wages of labor. The old law had become ft dead
letter, hence tho necessity of more legislation.

Township and Borough Treasurer
A bill bas passed the State Senate authorising
V the voters of Clearfield eounty to elect, in Decern
.;fber neat, a District Treasurer In every borough
and township in the eounty, who shall hold hii
office two years from the 1st Monday of January
)' following, who shall take charge, keep In custody
), and disburse all school, road, poor or other bor-
11 ougb or township funds tbat may come Into his
1 jtossession, for which he must give bond In doubl
,9'thfl amount of money that may come into bis
pt.&kda, wit,!, two jrcltcs for tbo faithful perform-

I the Supervisors, the eolleetor of school and bor-
ough taxes and ono for the Overseers, who shall

i to the borough or township Auditors, who shall at
I once charge the said Treasurer and other officers
with the amount of sueh tax In the township or

hllowod the County Treasurer for dollar servleee.

I
Very Unfair. We understand that
there is some excitement In K art b a us township
orer the passage of the fltata road act, and that
Sou at or Wallaon and Representative Lawshe are
being severelj criticised for aiding In the passage
of the bill to question. Of the real nseriU of the
question, we know but little. That good publio
roads are desirable and necessary 1b every sxittle-
uent Is Indisputable, and that all should work
together to this end Is ft duty. I f, however, the
major portion of the oititens of Karthaui town
ship are opposed to the building of the State road,
let them get up petitions remonstrating against
the act and asking for Its repeal, and send their
protest to our senator and member, and we have
no doubt their petitions will receive proper consid
eration. It la very unfair toward Messrs. Wal
lace and Lawshe to upbraid them for the part they
have acted In tbil matter, while not ft single re
monstrance against the measure was sent to liar
rlaburg. Representatives rely upon petitions, and
If those who favor the building of the road had
not petitioned for it, we presume It would not
bare passed. Publio policy demands the building
of public roads, yet we hare no doubt that If the
majority of the eitiaensof Karthaua township are
opposed to the building of the road in question
and ask for the repeal of the act, tbat our repre
sentatives will give tbem a respectful hearing.
In matters of this kind the ei'tiitm relies too much
upon the HrprttHtatit, Although not a legisla
tor, our personal experience teaches us that the
former rely too much upon the lattor A score, or
perhaps less, ofcltliens gather in their respective
iclghhorhoods, In a store or hotel, and In discuss
ing affairs, very sagely ask each other why Mr.
Wallace or Mr. awsho does not pass such and
suuh acts, when perhaps nolther bavo been peti
tioned for by a single person. Now, whenover
legislation Is desired, let those favoring it get up
their potitlons, and those opposed get up remon
strances, and have them signed and forward them
at narniDurg. inn u the ne
cessary etiquette between eltlsen and Representa
tive. Let this rule be observed strictly, on the
part of the former, and together with the aid of
the Press we will guarantee that no nseless or bad
legislation will occur, unless the ei titan desires It,
or the Representative Is venal and corrupt, and If
this Is established, he can soon be exposed and re
vved. There Is no class of criminals to offensive
to our senses as the corrupt legislator. Hence, we
esteem It a pleasure, as well as our highest duty,
to expose all such when property brought to our
notice. The mere ipm dixit of one or two indi
viduals In a neighborhood Is not proof sufficient
to make out ft ease of this kind, but tho written
statements of ft like number would be worthy of
consideration.
Still IcE-Boy.ND. For tho first
time In many years, the Susquehanna and Juniata
rivers and their tributaries are completely ice
bound, from the mouth to tho source, and every
thing Indicates ft late rafting season. Those
therefore who have rafts to put in will do well to
bavo erorv thing upon the ground, and aa soon as
the toe moves let them move alio, and right smart
ly at that; because, if floods are scarce, tbey will
neither get to market with their lumber nor get
any farming done in proper season. We have had
remarkable winter, and we must make remarka
ble efforts and adjust ourselves to suit tbo season,
or we will come out behind. Therefore when the
breakup comes let every one be ready and go to
work and handle himself as though ho intended
to do some business. . tf
Thomas Brown. Wo regret to
learn of the death of this esteemed fonuureitiaen,
his home In Medina eonnty, Ohio, oa the 10th
of February, in the 6.1d year of his age. He was
born tn Lycoming eounty and removed to Cur-
wens villa In 1830, where be carried on the mer
cantile business until 1843, when he removed to
Ohio, but was back several years after, and enter
ed into partnership with Isaac Smith. Both gen
tlemen will no doubt be distinctly remembered by
the old residents of Corwcnsville. Mr. Brown
fell dead while adjusting ft door at his corn house.
A pott mortem examination revealed tbo fact tbat
ho died from sppoplexy. He was highly esteemed
by his neighbors. He leaves a wife (formerly
Miss England of Curwensvlllo) and five children
to mourn his sudden demise.
